    Field Redefinition Invariance in Quantum Field Theory

    The issue of field redefinition invariance of path integrals in quantum field theory is reexamined. A ``paradox'' is presented involving the reduction to an effective quantum-mechanical theory of a (d+1)(d+1)-dimensional free scalar field in a Minkowskian spacetime with compactified spatial coordinates. The implementation of field redefinitions both before and after the reduction suggests that operator-ordering issues in quantum field theory should not be ignored.Comment: 7 page

    Minimal distance transformations between links and polymers: Principles and examples

    The calculation of Euclidean distance between points is generalized to one-dimensional objects such as strings or polymers. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the minimal transformation between two polymer configurations are derived. Transformations consist of piecewise rotations and translations subject to Weierstrass-Erdmann corner conditions. Numerous examples are given for the special cases of one and two links. The transition to a large number of links is investigated, where the distance converges to the polymer length times the mean root square distance (MRSD) between polymer configurations, assuming curvature and non-crossing constraints can be neglected. Applications of this metric to protein folding are investigated. Potential applications are also discussed for structural alignment problems such as pharmacophore identification, and inverse kinematic problems in motor learning and control.Comment: Submitted to J.     The transmission of fermions of mass m and energy E through an electrostatic potential barrier of rectangular shape (i.e. supporting an infinite electric field), of height U> E + m - due to the many-body nature of the Dirac equation evidentiated by the Klein paradox - has been widely studied. We exploit here the analytical solution, given by Sauter for the linearly rising potential step, to show that the tunnelling rate through a more realistic trapezoidal barrier is exponentially depressed, as soon as the length of the regions supporting a finite electric field exceeds the Compton wavelenght of the particle - the latter circumstance being hardly escapable in most realistic cases

    Standard Model Neutrinos as Warm Dark Matter

    Standard Model neutrinos are not usually considered plausible dark matter candidates because the usual treatment of their decoupling in the early universe implies that their mass must be sufficiently small to make them ``hot'' dark matter. In this paper we show that decoupling of Standard Model neutrinos in low reheat models may result in neutrino densities very much less than usually assumed, and thus their mass may be in the keV range.     N-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with dysglycemia

    Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2012 Massachusetts Medical Society.Background: The use of n-3 fatty acids may prevent cardiovascular events in patients with recent myocardial infarction or heart failure. Their effects in patients with (or at risk for) type 2 diabetes mellitus are unknown. Methods: In this double-blind study with a 2-by-2 factorial design, we randomly assigned 12,536 patients who were at high risk for cardiovascular events and had impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or diabetes to receive a 1-g capsule containing at least 900 mg (90% or more) of ethyl esters of n-3 fatty acids or placebo daily and to receive either insulin glargine or standard care. The primary outcome was death from cardiovascular causes. The results of the comparison between n-3 fatty acids and placebo are reported here. Results: During a median follow up of 6.2 years, the incidence of the primary outcome was not significantly decreased among patients receiving n-3 fatty acids, as compared with those receiving placebo (574 patients [9.1%] vs. 581 patients [9.3%]; hazard ratio, 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87 to 1.10; P = 0.72). The use of n-3 fatty acids also had no significant effect on the rates of major vascular events (1034 patients [16.5%] vs. 1017 patients [16.3%]; hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.93 to 1.10; P = 0.81), death from any cause (951 [15.1%] vs. 964 [15.4%]; hazard ratio, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.89 to 1.07; P = 0.63), or death from arrhythmia (288 [4.6%] vs. 259 [4.1%]; hazard ratio, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.93 to 1.30; P = 0.26). Triglyceride levels were reduced by 14.5 mg per deciliter (0.16 mmol per liter) more among patients receiving n-3 fatty acids than among those receiving placebo (P<0.001), without a significant effect on other lipids. Adverse effects were similar in the two groups. Conclusions: Daily supplementation with 1 g of n-3 fatty acids did not reduce the rate of cardiovascular events in patients at high risk for cardiovascular events.     First Passage Time Densities in Non-Markovian Models with Subthreshold Oscillations

    Motivated by the dynamics of resonant neurons we consider a differentiable, non-Markovian random process x(t)x(t) and particularly the time after which it will reach a certain level xbx_b. The probability density of this first passage time is expressed as infinite series of integrals over joint probability densities of xx and its velocity x˙\dot{x}. Approximating higher order terms of this series through the lower order ones leads to closed expressions in the cases of vanishing and moderate correlations between subsequent crossings of xbx_b. For a linear oscillator driven by white or coloured Gaussian noise, which models a resonant neuron, we show that these approximations reproduce the complex structures of the first passage time densities characteristic for the underdamped dynamics, where Markovian approximations (giving monotonous first passage time distribution) fail

    Superelasticity in high strength heterophase single crystals of Ni51.0Ti36.5Hf12.5 alloy

    The effect of precipitated disperse H-phase particles on the thermoelastic B2–B19′ martensitic transformation (MT) under compressive load has been studied on [001]-, [236]-, and [223]-oriented single crystals of Ni51.0Ti36.5Hf12.5 (at %) alloy in the initial (as-grown) state. It is established that, in Ni51.0Ti36.5Hf12.5 single crystals containing disperse H-phase particles with dimensions within 125–150 nm at a volume fraction of ~30%, neither the critical stresses of martensite formation nor superelasticity strain depend on the orientation. Fully reversible B2–B19′ MTs in Ni51.0Ti36.5Hf12.5 single crystals have been observed in tests at external axial stresses up to 1700 MPa and temperatures up to Tt ~ 373 K

    New Upper Limits on the Tau Neutrino Mass from Primordial Helium Considerations

    In this paper we reconsider recently derived bounds on MeVMeV tau neutrinos, taking into account previously unaccounted for effects. We find that, assuming that the neutrino life-time is longer than O(100 sec)O(100~sec), the constraint Neff<3.6N_{eff}<3.6 rules out ντ\nu_{\tau} masses in the range 0.5 (MeV)<mντ<35 (MeV)0.5~(MeV)<m_{\nu_\tau}<35~(MeV) for Majorana neutrinos and 0.74 (MeV)<mντ<35 (MeV)0.74~(MeV)<m_{\nu_\tau}<35~(MeV) for Dirac neutrinos. Given that the present laboratory bound is 35 MeV, our results lower the present bound to 0.50.5 and 0.740.74 for Majorana and Dirac neutrinos respectively.Comment: 9 pages (2 figures available upon request), UM-AC-93-0

    Two loops calculation in chiral perturbation theory and the unitarization program of current algebra

    In this paper we compare two loop Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) calculation of pion-pion scattering with the unitarity second order correction to the current algebra soft-pion theorem.
