An experimental study towards the practical application of closed-loop flat-plate pulsating heat pipes
The thermal performance of a flat-plate closed-loop pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is experimentally obtained. The PHP is manufactured by means of CNC-milling and vacuum brazing of a stainless steel 316L bottom plate and lid. Each channel of the PHP has a 2×2 mm2 square cross section. In total 12 channels (6 turns) fit in the 50×200 mm2 effective area of the PHP. During the experimental investigation, the power input is increased from 20W to 100W through a 50×50 mm2 evaporator section, while cooling is performed through a 50×50 mm2 condenser section with the use of a Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC). The PHP is charged with methanol with 40% filling ratio. The thermal resistance is obtained for different inclination angles. It is observed that the 6-turn device operates well in vertical orientation. It however does not operate horizontally. Moreover, experiments have shown that the operating orientation is between 15-30°. The overall thermal resistance was determined at 0.48 K/W for a 100 W power input in the vertical evaporator-down orientation
Randomized trial of polychromatic blue-enriched light for circadian phase shifting, melatonin suppression, and alerting responses.
Wavelength comparisons have indicated that circadian phase-shifting and enhancement of subjective and EEG-correlates of alertness have a higher sensitivity to short wavelength visible light. The aim of the current study was to test whether polychromatic light enriched in the blue portion of the spectrum (17,000 K) has increased efficacy for melatonin suppression, circadian phase-shifting, and alertness as compared to an equal photon density exposure to a standard white polychromatic light (4000 K). Twenty healthy participants were studied in a time-free environment for 7 days. The protocol included two baseline days followed by a 26-h constant routine (CR1) to assess initial circadian phase. Following CR1, participants were exposed to a full-field fluorescent light (1 × 10 14 photons/cm 2 /s, 4000 K or 17,000 K, n = 10/condition) for 6.5 h during the biological night. Following an 8 h recovery sleep, a second 30-h CR was performed. Melatonin suppression was assessed from the difference during the light exposure and the corresponding clock time 24 h earlier during CR1. Phase-shifts were calculated from the clock time difference in dim light melatonin onset time (DLMO) between CR1 and CR2. Blue-enriched light caused significantly greater suppression of melatonin than standard light ((mean ± SD) 70.9 ± 19.6% and 42.8 ± 29.1%, respectively, p \u3c 0.05). There was no significant difference in the magnitude of phase delay shifts. Blue-enriched light significantly improved subjective alertness (p \u3c 0.05) but no differences were found for objective alertness. These data contribute to the optimization of the short wavelength-enriched spectra and intensities needed for circadian, neuroendocrine and neurobehavioral regulation
Role of obesity in a randomized placebo-controlled trial of difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) + sulindac for the prevention of sporadic colorectal adenomas.
BackgroundChemoprevention with the polyamine-inhibitory regimen difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) + sulindac markedly reduces risk of recurrent adenoma in colorectal adenoma patients. Obesity is associated with risk of colorectal adenoma and colorectal cancer. This study investigates how obesity influences risk of recurrent adenoma after prolonged treatment with DFMO + sulindac versus placebo.MethodsOur analysis included subjects enrolled in the phase III colorectal adenoma prevention clinical trial investigating DFMO + sulindac versus placebo. Patients were classified by obesity (body mass index, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2)) status at baseline. Pearson χ(2) statistic and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare baseline characteristics, including rectal tissue polyamine levels. Log-binomial regression analysis was used to determine the risk ratio (RR) of recurrent adenomas, adjusted for covariates and an interaction term for obesity and treatment.ResultsThe final analytic cohort was comprised of 267 patients. In separate regression models, the risk of adenoma recurrence after treatment compared to placebo was similar for obese (RR = 0.32, 95 % CI 15-71) and non-obese patients (RR = 0.27, 95 % CI 15-49). No significant interaction was detected between obesity, treatment, and risk of colorectal adenoma in the full regression model (p (interaction) = 0.91).ConclusionsObesity does not substantially modify the colorectal adenoma risk reduction ascribed to DFMO + sulindac versus placebo
Efficient Resolution of Anisotropic Structures
We highlight some recent new delevelopments concerning the sparse
representation of possibly high-dimensional functions exhibiting strong
anisotropic features and low regularity in isotropic Sobolev or Besov scales.
Specifically, we focus on the solution of transport equations which exhibit
propagation of singularities where, additionally, high-dimensionality enters
when the convection field, and hence the solutions, depend on parameters
varying over some compact set. Important constituents of our approach are
directionally adaptive discretization concepts motivated by compactly supported
shearlet systems, and well-conditioned stable variational formulations that
support trial spaces with anisotropic refinements with arbitrary
directionalities. We prove that they provide tight error-residual relations
which are used to contrive rigorously founded adaptive refinement schemes which
converge in . Moreover, in the context of parameter dependent problems we
discuss two approaches serving different purposes and working under different
regularity assumptions. For frequent query problems, making essential use of
the novel well-conditioned variational formulations, a new Reduced Basis Method
is outlined which exhibits a certain rate-optimal performance for indefinite,
unsymmetric or singularly perturbed problems. For the radiative transfer
problem with scattering a sparse tensor method is presented which mitigates or
even overcomes the curse of dimensionality under suitable (so far still
isotropic) regularity assumptions. Numerical examples for both methods
illustrate the theoretical findings
Effects of early and late diabetic neuropathy on sciatic nerve block duration and neurotoxicity in Zucker diabetic fatty rats
Background The neuropathy of type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing in prevalence worldwide. We aimed to test the hypothesis that in a rodent model of type II DM, neuropathy would lead to increased neurotoxicity and block duration after lidocaine-induced sciatic nerve block when compared with control animals. Methods Experiments were carried out in Zucker diabetic fatty rats aged 10 weeks (early diabetic) or 18 weeks (late diabetic, with or without insulin 3 units per day), and age-matched healthy controls. Left sciatic nerve block was performed using 0.2 ml lidocaine 2%. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and F-wave latency were used to quantify nerve function before, and 1 week after nerve block, after which sciatic nerves were used for neurohistopathology. Results Early diabetic animals did not show increased signs of nerve dysfunction after nerve block. In late diabetic animals without insulin vs control animals, NCV was 34.8 (5.0) vs 41.1 (4.1) ms s−1 (P<0.01), and F-wave latency was 7.7 (0.5) vs 7.0 (0.2) ms (P<0.01), respectively. Motor nerve block duration was prolonged in late diabetic animals, but neurotoxicity was not. Late diabetic animals receiving insulin showed intermediate results. Conclusions In a rodent type II DM model, nerves have increased sensitivity for short-acting local anaesthetics without adjuvants in vivo, as evidenced by prolonged block duration. This sensitivity appears to increase with the progression of neuropathy. Our results do not support the hypothesis that neuropathy due to type II DM increases the risk of nerve injury after nerve bloc
