    Assessing Code Authorship: The Case of the Linux Kernel

    Code authorship is a key information in large-scale open source systems. Among others, it allows maintainers to assess division of work and identify key collaborators. Interestingly, open-source communities lack guidelines on how to manage authorship. This could be mitigated by setting to build an empirical body of knowledge on how authorship-related measures evolve in successful open-source communities. Towards that direction, we perform a case study on the Linux kernel. Our results show that: (a) only a small portion of developers (26 %) makes significant contributions to the code base; (b) the distribution of the number of files per author is highly skewed --- a small group of top authors (3 %) is responsible for hundreds of files, while most authors (75 %) are responsible for at most 11 files; (c) most authors (62 %) have a specialist profile; (d) authors with a high number of co-authorship connections tend to collaborate with others with less connections.Comment: Accepted at 13th International Conference on Open Source Systems (OSS). 12 page

    Development and characterisation of dental composites containing anisotropic fluorapatite bundles and rods

    Objectives: To develop dental composites incorporating fluorapatite (FA) crystals as a secondary filler and to characterise degree of conversion, key mechanical properties and fluoride release. Methods: FA rod-like crystals and bundles were hydrothermally synthesised and characterised by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 19F MAS-NMR. Composites were formulated containing BisGMA/TEGDMA/BisEMA and barium-aluminium-silicate glass (0FA). FA crystals were incorporated at 10 (10FA), 20 (20FA), 30 (30FA) and 40 wt% (40FA) maintaining a filler content of 80 wt% (63–67 vol%). Degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), fracture toughness (K1C), Vickers hardness (HV) and 2-body wear were measured. Fluoride release was measured in neutral and acidic buffers. Results: XRD and 19F MAS-NMR confirmed that only FA was formed, whilst SEM revealed the presence of single rods and bundles of nano-rods. DC ranged between 56–60% (p > 0.05). FA composites showed lower FM and lower FS (p 0.05) to 0FA. 30FA and 40FA showed similar K1C to 0FA (p > 0.05), with SEM showing evidence of toughening mechanisms, whereas 10FA and 20FA showed lower K1C (p < 0.05). FA containing composites released fluoride that was proportional to the amount of FA incorporated (p < 0.05) but only under acidic conditions. Significance: The addition of FA to the experimental composites reduced strength and stiffness but not the DC, hardness or wear rate. 30FA and 40FA had a higher K1C compared to other FA groups. Fluoride release occurred under an accelerated acidic regime, suggesting potential as a bioactive ‘smart’ composite

    Inside the guts of wood-eating catfishes: can they digest wood?

    To better understand the structure and function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of wood-eating catfishes, the gross morphology, length, and microvilli surface area (MVSA) of the intestines of wild-caught Panaque nocturnus, P. cf. nigrolineatus “Marañon”, and Hypostomus pyrineusi were measured, and contrasted against these same metrics of a closely related detritivore, Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus. All four species had anatomically unspecialized intestines with no kinks, valves, or ceca of any kind. The wood-eating catfishes had body size-corrected intestinal lengths that were 35% shorter than the detritivore. The MVSA of all four species decreased distally in the intestine, indicating that nutrient absorption preferentially takes place in the proximal and mid-intestine, consistent with digestive enzyme activity and luminal carbohydrate profiles for these same species. Wild-caught Pt. disjunctivus, and P. nigrolineatus obtained via the aquarium trade, poorly digested wood cellulose (<33% digestibility) in laboratory feeding trials, lost weight when consuming wood, and passed stained wood through their digestive tracts in less than 4 h. Furthermore, no selective retention of small particles was observed in either species in any region of the gut. Collectively, these results corroborate digestive enzyme activity profiles and gastrointestinal fermentation levels in the fishes’ GI tracts, suggesting that the wood-eating catfishes are not true xylivores such as beavers and termites, but rather, are detritivores like so many other fishes from the family Loricariidae

We conducted two parallel experimental trials in Morocco and Tunisia of a new oral vaccine candidate against Echinococcus granulosus in 28 dogs.     Saliva levels of Abeta1-42 as potential biomarker of Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Simple, non-invasive tests for early detection of degenerative dementia by use of biomarkers are urgently required. However, up to the present, no validated extracerebral diagnostic markers for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD) are available. The clinical diagnosis of probable AD is made with around 90% accuracy using modern clinical, neuropsychological and imaging methods. A biochemical marker that would support the clinical diagnosis and distinguish AD from other causes of dementia would therefore be of great value as a screening test. A total of 126 samples were obtained from subjects with AD, and age-sex-matched controls. Additionally, 51 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients were used as an example of another neurodegenerative disorder. We analyzed saliva and plasma levels of β amyloid (Aβ) using a highly sensitive ELISA kit.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found a small but statistically significant increase in saliva Aβ<sub>42 </sub>levels in mild AD patients. In addition, there were not differences in saliva concentration of Aβ<sub>42 </sub>between patients with PD and healthy controls. Saliva Aβ<sub>40 </sub>expression was unchanged within all the studied sample. The association between saliva Aβ<sub>42 </sub>levels and AD was independent of established risk factors, including age or Apo E, but was dependent on sex and functional capacity.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We suggest that saliva Aβ<sub>42 </sub>levels could be considered a potential peripheral marker of AD and help discrimination from other types of neurodegenerative disorders. We propose a new and promising biomarker for early AD.</p
