    First detection of Pasteurella multocida type B:2 in Hungary associated with systemic pasteurellosis in backyard pigs

    This is the first report of Pasteurella multocida type B in Hungarian pigs. This disease was observed in backyard-raised pigs in three households within a small area. Neither the source of the infection nor the epidemiological connection between any of the premises could be determined. The most consistent lesion was dark red discolouration of the skin of the ventral neck and brisket, with accompanying oedema and haemorrhages. The morbidity was low and lethality relatively high, with three dead (50%) and two euthanised (33%) out of six affected animals. A total of three isolates of P. multocida (P55, P56 and P57) were cultured from these cases and examined in detail. These were identified as P. multocida ssp. multocida biovar 3. All were toxA negative and belonged to serotype B:2. Multilocus sequence typing was used to assign these to a new sequence type (ST61) that is closely related to other haemorrhagic septicaemia causing strains of P. multocida regardless of the host. M13 polymerase chain reaction and virulence-associated gene typing also show that type B strains form a highly homogeneous, distinct phylogenic group within P. multocida

    Agronomic strategies to enhance the early vigor and yield of maize. Part I: the role of seed applied biostimulant, hybrid and starter fertilization on rhizosphere bacteria profile and diversity

    The sustainable intensification of maize-based systems may reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and the excessive use of non-renewable inputs. Considering the key role that the microbiological fertility has on crop growth and resilience, it is worth of interest studying the role of cropping system on the rhizosphere bacterial communities, that affect soil health and biological soil fertility. In this work we monitored and characterized the diversity and composition of native rhizosphere bacterial communities during the early growth phases of two maize genotypes of different early vigor, using a nitrogen (N)-phosphorus (P) starter fertilization and a biostimulant seed treatment, in a growth chamber experiment, by polymerase chain reactiondenaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of partial 16S rRNA gene and amplicon sequencing. Cluster analyses showed that the biostimulant treatment affected the rhizosphere bacterial microbiota of the ordinary hybrid more than that of the early vigor, both at plant emergence and at the 5-leaf stage. Moreover, the diversity indices calculated from the community profiles, revealed significant effects of NP fertilization on richness and the estimated effective number of species (H2) in both maize genotypes, while the biostimulant had a positive effect on plant growth promoting community of the ordinary hybrid, both at the plant emergence and at the fifth leaf stage. Our data showed that maize genotype was the major factor shaping rhizosphere bacterial community composition suggesting that the root system of the two maize hybrids recruited a different microbiota. Moreover, for the first time, we identified at the species and genus level the predominant native bacteria associated with two maize hybrids differing for vigor. These results pave the way for further studies to be performed on the effects of cropping system and specific crop practices, considering also the application of biostimulants, on beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) represent an important group of root symbionts, given the key role they play in the enhancement of plant nutrition, health, and product quality. The services provided by AMF often are facilitated by large and diverse beneficial bacterial communities, closely associated with spores, sporocarps, and extraradical mycelium, showing different functional activities, such as N2 fixation, nutrient mobilization, and plant hormone, antibiotic, and siderophore production and also mycorrhizal establishment promotion, leading to the enhancement of host plant performance. The potential functional complementarity of AMF and associated microbiota poses a key question as to whether members of AMF-associated bacterial communities can colonize the root system after establishment of mycorrhizas, thereby becoming endophytic. Root endophytic bacterial communities are currently studied for the benefits provided to host plants in the form of growth promotion, stress reduction, inhibition of plant pathogens, and plant hormone release. Their quantitative and qualitative composition is influenced by many factors, such as geographical location, soil type, host genotype, and cultivation practices. Recent data suggest that an additional factor affecting bacterial endophyte recruitment could be AMF and their associated bacteria, even though the mechanisms allowing members of AMF-associated bacterial communities to actually establish in the root system, becoming endophytic, remain to be determined. Given the diverse plant growth–promoting properties shown by AMF-associated bacteria, further studies are needed to understand whether AMF may represent suitable tools to introduce beneficial root endophytes in sustainable and organic agriculture where the functioning of such multipartite association may be crucial for crop production

    These data are from two nearby paleoclimate archives located in southern Hungary. Both exhibit millennial/sub-millennial scale, D-O-like climate variability, with significiant warming over interstadial periods. As such, dataset 1 provides stable and clumped isotope data measured at the Institute of Geological and Geochemical Research and the ETH and related calculations from land snail shell carbonates recovered from the Dunaszekcső loess record, Hungary. Dataset 2 contains 230Th/232Th activity ratios and calculated U-Th ages and stable C-O isotope data as functions of distance from top (mm) and age of the PK-6 flowstone, Bükkösd, Hungary

    A szerzők irodalmi áttekintést adnak a B:2 típusú Pasteurella multocida törzsek okozta vérfertőzéses pasteurellosis előfordulásáról sertésben. Ez a heveny, gyakran elhullással végződő kórkép elsősorban a bivalyokat és szarvasmarhákat érinti, de egyéb állatfajok is fogékonyak a betegség iránt. A szerzők beszámolnak a vérfertőzéses pasteurellosis sertésben észlelt első hazai felbukkanásáról. Ismertetik a 2013 augusztusában háztáji sertésekben észlelt megbetegedések körülményeit, és részletesen tárgyalják a kórbonctani, kórszövettani és immun-hisztokémiai vizsgálatok során talált elváltozásokat.     Transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in pp collisions at (s)\sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV

    Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(charged)/d(eta) for |eta| < 0.5, are 3.48 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.13 (syst.) and 4.47 +/- 0.04 (stat.) +/- 0.16 (syst.), respectively. The results at 0.9 TeV are in agreement with previous measurements and confirm the expectation of near equal hadron production in p-pbar and pp collisions. The results at 2.36 TeV represent the highest-energy measurements at a particle collider to date

    Charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7~TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit-pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity \dnchdeta|_{|\eta| < 0.5} = 5.78\pm 0.01\stat\pm 0.23\syst for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The relative increase in charged-particle multiplicity from s=0.9\sqrt{s} = 0.9 to 7~TeV is 66.1\%\pm 1.0\%\stat\pm 4.2\%\syst. The mean transverse momentum is measured to be 0.545\pm 0.005\stat\pm 0.015\syst\GeVc.     We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/ c to 1 TeV/ c . The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766±0.0032(stat.)±0.0032(syst.) , independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/ c . This is the most precise measurement to date.     Search for Pair Production of Second-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in pp Collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for pair production of second-generation scalar leptoquarks in the final state with two muons and two jets is performed using proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 inverse picobarns. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the predictions from the standard model processes. An upper limit is set on the second-generation leptoquark cross section times beta^2 as a function of the leptoquark mass, and leptoquarks with masses below 394 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level for beta = 1, where beta is the leptoquark branching fraction into a muon and a quark. These limits are the most stringent to date

    Dijet angular distributions are measured over a wide range of dijet invariant masses in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, at the CERN LHC. The event sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The data are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD, and yield no evidence of quark compositeness. With a modified frequentist approach, a lower limit on the contact interaction scale for left-handed quarks of Lambda = 5.6 TeV is obtained at the 95% confidence level
