    A light front treatment of the nuclear wave function is developed and applied, using the mean field approximation, to infinite nuclear matter. The nuclear mesons are shown to carry about a third of the nuclear plus momentum, p+; but their momentum distribution has support only at p+ =0, and the mesons do not contribute to nuclear deep inelastic scattering. This zero mode effect occurs because the meson fields are independent of space-time position.Comment: 11 pages, revtex, 1 figur

    Effects of bardoxolone methyl on body weight, waist circumference and glycemic control in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and stage 4 chronic kidney disease

    AimsObesity is associated with progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Treatment with bardoxolone methyl in a multinational phase 3 trial, Bardoxolone Methyl Evaluation in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Type 2 Diabetes (BEACON), resulted in increases in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with concurrent reductions in body weight. We performed post-hoc analyses to further characterize reductions in body weight with bardoxolone methyl.MethodsEligible patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and CKD stage 4 (eGFR 15 to <30 mL/min/1.73 m2) were randomized 1:1 to receive once-daily oral dose of bardoxolone methyl (20 mg) or placebo.ResultsBEACON enrolled 2185 patients. Patients randomized to bardoxolone methyl experienced significant reductions in body weight from baseline relative to patients randomized to placebo (-5.7 kg; 95% CI: -6.0 to -5.3 kg; p < 0.001). In patients randomized to bardoxolone methyl, rate and magnitude of body weight loss were proportional to baseline BMI. Bardoxolone methyl resulted in significant reductions in waist circumference and improved glycemic control.ConclusionsBardoxolone methyl resulted in significant weight loss in a generally obese patient population with T2DM and stage 4 CKD, with the magnitude and rate dependent on baseline BMI

    Revealing Nuclear Pions Using Electron Scattering

    A model for the pionic components of nuclear wave functions is obtained from light front dynamical calculations of binding energies and densities. The pionic effects are small enough to be consistent with measured nuclear di-muon production data and with the nucleon sea. But the pion effects are large enough to predict substantial nuclear enhancement of the cross section for longitudinally polarized virtual photons for the kinematics accessible at Jefferson Laboratory.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Portraying the nature of corruption: Using an explorative case-study design

    What is the nature of corruption in Western democracies? To answer this research question, the authors study 10 Dutch corruption cases in depth, looking at confidential criminal files. The cases allow them to sketch a general profile of a corruption case. The authors offer nine propositions to portray the nature of corruption. They conclude that corruption usually takes place within enduring relationships, that the process of becoming corrupt can be characterized as a slippery slope, and that important motives for corruption, aside from material gain, include friendship or love, status, and the desire to impress others. The explorative multiple case study methodology helps to expand our understanding of the way in which officials become corrupt. © 2008 The American Society for Public Administration

    Characterization of Burkholderia rhizoxinica and B. endofungorum Isolated from Clinical Specimens

    Eight isolates submitted to CDC from 1989 to 2006 from clinical specimens were initially identified as members of the genus Burkholderia based on preliminary cellular fatty acid analysis and/or 16S rRNA gene sequencing. With the recent descriptions of the new species B. rhizoxinica and B. endofungorum, which are considered endosymbiotic bacteria in Rhizopus microsporus fungi, we now identify seven of these clinical isolates as B. rhizoxinica and one as B. endofungorum based on biochemical testing, 16s rRNA, and DNA-DNA hybridization results. We also further characterize these isolates by assessing toxin production and/or by multiple locus sequence typing

    Light Front Treatment of Nuclei: Formalism and Simple Applications

    A relativistic light front treatment of nuclei is developed by performing light front quantization for a chiral Lagrangian. The energy momentum tensor and the appropriate Hamiltonian are obtained. Three illustrations of the formalism are made. (1) Pion-nucleon scattering at tree level is shown to reproduce soft pion theorems. (2) The one boson exchange treatment of nucleon-nucleon scattering is developed and shown (by comparison with previous results of the equal time formulation) to lead to a reasonable description of nucleon-nucleon phase shifts. (3) The mean field approximation is applied to infinite nuclear matter, and the plus momentum distributions of that system are studied. The mesons are found to carry a significant fraction of the plus momentum, but are inaccessible to experiments.Comment: 48 pages, ReVTex, 3 .eps files included, submitted to Phys. Rev.
