Studies on the Helminth Fauna of Alaska. XLIII. \u3ci\u3eStrigea macropharynx\u3c/i\u3e sp. n., a Trematode Parasite of \u3ci\u3eFalco rusticolus\u3c/i\u3e L.
Strigea macropharynx sp. n. (Trematoda : Strigeata, Strigeidae), an intestinal parasite of Falco rusticolus L., is described. Falconiformes harbor two species of Strigea (S. falconis Szidat, 1928, and S. macroconophora,/i\u3e Dubois and Rausch, 1950) with vitellaria terminating near the copulatory bursa. Both differ from the new species in having a pharynx that is smaller than or subequal to the buccal sucker, as well as in other details. In S. elegans Chandler and Rausch, 1947, a parasite of Strigiformes, the eggs are larger, the testes of different form, and the vitellaria extend significantly farther into the region of the copulatory bursa. The very intimate contact existing between the tribocytic organ of S. macropharynx and the intestinal mucosa of the host suggests that extracorporeal digestion of host tissue takes place
Prevention of chronic renal failure in the adult
peer reviewedChronic renal failure is an unrecognised disease, with an insidious and rather silent development, for which the general practitioners are too often passive. This review would like to insist on the detection of people at risk or with early abnormalities, on the optimal guidelines to slowdown the evolution to more severe and irreversible stages, on the prevention of uremic and cardiovascular complications and on the preparation to end stage renal treatments
The Resistance to Freeze-Drying and to Storage Was Determined as the Cellular Ability to Recover Its Survival Rate and Acidification Activity
The protective effects of the fatty acid composition and membrane action of the acidification activity of two strains of Lactobacillus kept at 20°C were studied. The addition of sorbitol, monosodium glutamate and glycerol during storage is causing the decline of acidification and increased concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids observed in both strains. The addition of sorbitol and monosodium glutamate does not alter the fatty acid composition, whatever the strain, but increases the resistance to freeze-drying of L. plantarum CWBI-B1419 and improves survival during storage. The addition of these preservatives and decreased activity of acidification improves the ratio unsaturated. These results indicate that the survival during storage and freeze-drying resistance are closely related to the composition of membrane fatty acids. This behaviour can be interpreted as an adaptation of L. plantarum B1419-CWBI supplemented by cryoprotectant additives such as sorbitol or monosodium glutamate sorbitol and monosodium glutamate as an additive. L. plantarum CWBI-B1419 presents a greater adaptation to culture conditions than L. paracasei ssp. paracasei LMG9192T
Digital Holographic Interferometry in the Long-Wave Infrared for the Testing of Large Aspheric Space Reflectors
Digital holographic (DH) interferometry has been developed in the long-wave infrared spectral range with CO2 lasers and microbolometer arrays. This application has been driven by the European Space Agency’s constant need of techniques for monitoring large displacements of large structures. Here the study focuses on the case of aspheric mirrors, like parabola and ellipses. Usually they are tested through interferometric wavefront error measurements which require expensive null-lenses matching each of the reflectors considered. In the case of monitoring deformation a holographic technique can be considered where the wavefront is compared with itself at different instant. Therefore the optical can be quite simple and easily reconfigurable from one reflector to another.
The advantage of using long wavelength is that large deformations can be measured at once, in addition to being more immune against environmental perturbations. Another advantage of DH at such wavelengths is that the ratio between the wavelength and the pixel size allows reconstructing objects 5 to 10 times larger than with DH in the visible.
In this project we considered first the case of a 1.1 meter diameter parabola for submillimeter range observations. Such specimen shows strong specular reflectivity. We have developed several set-ups with different ways to illuminate the object and to collect rays to form the object beam: either through point source or through and extended diffuser working by reflection of the laser beam. Both possibilities have been compared in terms of fringe quality as well as measurement range. We selected the diffuser illumination for applying the set-up into a large vacuum facility for measuring the deformation of the parabola between 224 and 107 K. Results of this measurement campaign are presented.
A further application has been shown by observation of off-axis ellipse. In this case interferometric testing is difficult to achieve and LWIR DHI with diffuser illumination is found quite simple to implement and gives straightforward results.GSTP HOLODI
