Exploratory fishing experiments in Hirakud reservoir - Orissa State (1967-70)
Suitable areas for fishing have been located in the middle and upper regions of the Mahanadi course of Hirakud reservoir. In the former the suitable period is during summer and beginning of monsoons, and in the latter in summer and winter months. The fishery of the reservoir is contributed by four species namely S. silondia, L. fimbriatus, C. mirgala and C. catla

The design, construction and operational details of the purse-seines operated from Goa, for sardines and mackerel are reported briefly. The deck equipment and details of vessel along with the fishing season, fishing grounds and catches are briefly accounted. The design has been compared with Japanese purse-seines operated for the same species of fishes. Based on the findings an improved design of purse-seine has been presented
Shark long line gear of India
Sharks are mainly harvested with long lines which is less expensive compared to other methods of fishing. Though this is a common gear operated along the coast, the gear in every region has its own peculiarities in construction and rigging. This communication furnishes detailed description of the gear operated in different centres. Suggestions are also offered to improve the gear and methods for enhancing production
Implications of phosphor coating on the thermal characteristics of phosphor-converted white LEDs
The phosphor layer in phosphor-converted white
Light Emitting Diodes (pcLEDs) affects their optical and thermal
performances. This paper reports the effects of phosphor
thickness and particle concentration on the optical efficiency and
temperature rise on conformal phosphor-coated LED package. It
is observed that a thicker phosphor layer and a higher phosphor
particle concentration will increase the amount of backscattering
and back reflection of light from the phosphor layer. These light
extraction losses not only reduce the optical efficiency of the light
output but also cause heat accumulation in the phosphor layer,
leading to higher LED junction temperature. At 2700 K
correlated colour temperature (CCT), the temperature rise is
observed to increase by as much as 2.6 times as compared to its
blue emitting LED package. However, the self-heating effect can
be reduced through its die-bonding configuration. Structure
function-based thermal evaluation shows heat accumulation in
the phosphor layer and that flip-chip bonding can dissipate the
heat generated in the GaN LED and phosphor layer effectively.

Electronic excitations and the tunneling spectra of metallic nanograins
Tunneling-induced electronic excitations in a metallic nanograin are
classified in terms of {\em generations}: subspaces of excitations containing a
specific number of electron-hole pairs. This yields a hierarchy of populated
excited states of the nanograin that strongly depends on (a) the available
electronic energy levels; and (b) the ratio between the electronic relaxation
rate within the nano-grain and the bottleneck rate for tunneling transitions.
To study the response of the electronic energy level structure of the nanograin
to the excitations, and its signature in the tunneling spectrum, we propose a
microscopic mean-field theory. Two main features emerge when considering an Al
nanograin coated with Al oxide: (i) The electronic energy response fluctuates
strongly in the presence of disorder, from level to level and excitation to
excitation. Such fluctuations produce a dramatic sample dependence of the
tunneling spectra. On the other hand, for excitations that are energetically
accessible at low applied bias voltages, the magnitude of the response,
reflected in the renormalization of the single-electron energy levels, is
smaller than the average spacing between energy levels. (ii) If the tunneling
and electronic relaxation time scales are such as to admit a significant
non-equilibrium population of the excited nanoparticle states, it should be
possible to realize much higher spectral densities of resonances than have been
observed to date in such devices. These resonances arise from tunneling into
ground-state and excited electronic energy levels, as well as from charge
fluctuations present during tunneling.Comment: Submitted to the Physical Review
Calibration of Super-Kamiokande Using an Electron Linac
In order to calibrate the Super-Kamiokande experiment for solar neutrino
measurements, a linear accelerator (LINAC) for electrons was installed at the
detector. LINAC data were taken at various positions in the detector volume,
tracking the detector response in the variables relevant to solar neutrino
analysis. In particular, the absolute energy scale is now known with less than

Measurement of radon concentrations at Super-Kamiokande
Radioactivity from radon is a major background for observing solar neutrinos
at Super-Kamiokande. In this paper, we describe the measurement of radon
concentrations at Super-Kamiokande, the method of radon reduction, and the
radon monitoring system. The measurement shows that the current low-energy
event rate between 5.0 MeV and 6.5 MeV implies a radon concentration in the
Super-Kamiokande water of less than 1.4 mBq/m.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Full Circle or Spiralling Out of Control?: State Violence and the Control of Urbanisation in Papua New Guinea
There is an administrative reluctance to recognise the permanency of urban settlement in Papua New Guinea. This reluctance, evident since the 1960s, has been characteristic of both the colonial and post-colonial administrations. Opposition to some facets of urbanisation continues today, despite growing population and land pressures in most rural areas and real problems of landlessness emerging in particular rural areas. Colonial control of urban populations has been replicated in contemporary times, often in more draconian form. Eviction of urban settlers has been tied to issues of crime and urban respectability, and lingering perceptions that Melanesians should be rural residents. The growth of informal settlements and urbanisation are not seen as issues of urban planning, nor is the context of urban migration linked to socioeconomic inequality, hence other forms of urban policy are largely absent. Strengthening alliances between land-owners and the state (especially police and provincial administrations) have thus emphasised intraurban inequality and hampered national development
Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
