AbstractWith non-conventional manufacturing processes, being increasingly integrated into manufacturing process chains, controllers and control strategies, remote nowadays, have to take into account a plethora of phenomena and criteria. The current study addresses the challenges, associated with the framework of the thermal oriented processes, having holistic (digital) modelling as a main objective. Herein two different case studies are performed; numerical examples regarding big data impact on manufacturing and simulation-based paradigms of control design taking into account communications. Implementation of the aforementioned takes into account the controller's complexity

Finite element modeling of penetration laser welding of sandwich materials

AbstractIn this paper, a modeling strategy for the penetration laser welding is presented. Both the surface heat and the heat generated within the keyhole are taken into consideration. For the estimation of the heat source, analytical and semi-empirical equations are used. The model is verified for the penetration welding of homogenous materials, and the simulation results meet the experimental ones with good accuracy. However, the penetration welding of sandwich materials is prohibited due to their tendency to delaminate. In this work, the simulation is exploited for selecting process parameters that will not harm the internal layer of the sandwich material. Based on the experimental verification, strategies and guidelines for the successful welding of such materials are discussed

The United Nations considers the mobilization of the broad public to be the essential requirement for achieving a shift towards a more sustainable development. Science can play a vital role in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by contributing to ESD-related research and development on the one hand, and by becoming active awareness raisers themselves in education and multiplier networks. Specifically, the use of special Learnstruments, and investment inOpen Educationformats among other educational tools, may pave the way for accelerated apprehension and appreciation of sustainable manufacturing topics among the greater populace
