At-vessel fishing mortality for six species of sharks caught in the northwest Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico

    Get PDF
From 1994-2005 the Commercial Shark Fishery Observer Program (CSFOP) placed fishery observers aboard US bottom longline vessels engaged in directed fishing for sharks in the region from New Jersey to Louisiana, USA. Observers routinely recorded species specific at-vessel mortality as related to enduring the stress oflongline capture. Data for 5 species of sharks (sandbar Carcharhinus plumbeus, blacktip Carcharhinus limbatus, dusky Carcharhinus obscurus, tiger Galeocerdo cuvier, scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini, and great hammerhead Sphyrna mokilrran) were analyzed in this study. Multiple stepwise linear regressions indicate that age group, soak time and bottom water temperature can be used as predictors of at-vessel mortality and that size restrictions, size selective gear, restricting the soak time and time/area closures may be beneficial to fisheries targeting large coastal sharks

Intracranial tumour: an analysis of thirty-eight cases in children

In this Thesis I intend to give the Analysis of Thirty-eight Cases of Intracranial Tumour in Children which came under my observation, either directly or indirectly, during four years at the Infirmary for Children, Liverpool.I would emphasise the fact that I have no intention of writing a treatise on the subject, but simply of giving the cases as I found them. In some matters, indeed, the statistics and my observations differ from those recorded in the standard textbooks. The cases, a list and the general particulars of which are in the frontispiece, were all taken without selection as they came to the Infirmary. The fact that I was able to obtain post-mortem examinations of thirty -six of these adds to the value and interest of the analysis as such

First record of an Odontaspidid shark in Ascension Island waters

    Get PDF
The occurrence of the poorly understood shark species Odontapsis ferox is reported at an oceanic seamount in the central south Atlantic, within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Ascension Island. The presence of the species at this location is confirmed by the discovery of a tooth embedded in scientific equipment, and footage of at least one animal on autonomous underwater video. The new record of this shark species at this location demonstrates the knowledge gaps which still exist at many remote, oceanic structures and their candidacy for status as important conservation areas.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Limia (Limia) rivasi n. sp., a member of the dominicensis species group, is described from a series collected in a shallow, tidal creek on Ile de Ia Gonave, Haiti. The new species is distinct among congeners in possessing uniserial inner teeth and a short membranous swelling on the gonopodium
