    Covariantly constant forms on torsionful geometries from world-sheet and spacetime perspectives

    The symmetries of two-dimensional supersymmetric sigma models on target spaces with covariantly constant forms associated to special holonomy groups are analysed. It is shown that each pair of such forms gives rise to a new one, called a Nijenhuis form, and that there may be further reductions of the structure group. In many cases of interest there are also covariantly constant one-forms which also give rise to symmetries. These geometries are of interest in the context of heterotic supergravity solutions and the associated reductions are studied from a spacetime point of view via the Killing spinor equations.Comment: 33 pages, minor modifications, version published in JHE

    Dual-hop transmissions with fixed-gain relays over Generalized-Gamma fading channels

    In this paper, a study on the end-to-end performance of dual-hop wireless communication systems equipped with fixed-gain relays and operating over Generalized-Gamma (GG) fading channels is presented. A novel closed form expression for the moments of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived. The average bit error probability for coherent and non-coherent modulation schemes as well as the end-to-end outage probability of the considered system are also studied. Extensive numerically evaluated and computer simulations results are presented that verify the accuracy of the proposed mathematical analysis.\u

    Laser-induced spin protection and switching in a specially designed magnetic dot: A theoretical investigation

    Most laser-induced femtosecond magnetism investigations are done in magnetic thin films. Nanostructured magnetic dots, with their reduced dimensionality, present new opportunities for spin manipulation. Here we predict that if a magnetic dot has a dipole-forbidden transition between the lowest occupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the highest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO), but a dipole-allowed transition between LUMO+1 and HOMO, electromagnetically inducedtransparency can be used to prevent ultrafast laser-induced spin momentum reduction, or spin protection. This is realized through a strong dump pulse to funnel the population into LUMO+1. If the time delay between the pump and dump pulses is longer than 60 fs, a population inversion starts and spin switching is achieved.     Neutrino Mass Hierarchy and Stepwise Spectral Swapping of Supernova Neutrino Flavors

    We examine a phenomenon recently predicted by numerical simulations of supernova neutrino flavor evolution: the swapping of supernova νe\nu_e and νμ,τ\nu_{\mu,\tau} energy spectra below (above) energy \EC for the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy. We present the results of large-scale numerical calculations which show that in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy case, \EC decreases as the assumed νe⇌νμ,τ\nu_e\rightleftharpoons\nu_{\mu,\tau} effective 2×22\times 2 vacuum mixing angle (≃θ13\simeq \theta_{1 3}) is decreased. However, these calculations also indicate that \EC is essentially independent of the vacuum mixing angle in the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy case. With a good neutrino signal from a future Galactic supernova, the above results could be used to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy even if θ13\theta_{13} is too small to be detected in terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Flavor Evolution of the Neutronization Neutrino Burst from an O-Ne-Mg Core-Collapse Supernova

    We present results of 3-neutrino flavor evolution simulations for the neutronization burst from an O-Ne-Mg core-collapse supernova. We find that nonlinear neutrino self-coupling engineers a single spectral feature of stepwise conversion in the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy case and in the normal mass hierarchy case, a superposition of two such features corresponding to the vacuum neutrino mass-squared differences associated with solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations. These neutrino spectral features offer a unique potential probe of the conditions in the supernova environment and may allow us to distinguish between O-Ne-Mg and Fe core-collapse supernovae.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Impact of Yoga and Physical Exercise on Resting Heart Rate among Diabetic Patients

    The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of yoga and physical exercise on resting heart rate among diabetes patients. Thirty type-2 female diabetic patients (n = 30) from Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu were randomly selected as subjects. The age of the subjects ranged from 35 to 45 years. The subjects divided into three equal groups of ten subjects each (n = 10). In which, group I underwent yogic exercises (YEG), group II underwent physical activities (PAG) for six days per week for sixteen weeks and group III acted as control (CG) who did not undergo any special training programme apart from their regular activities. Resting heart rate was selected as a test variable and assessed before and after the training period. The collected data were statistically analysed by using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Scheffe?s test was applied as post hoc test to determine the paired mean difference. From the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant reduction (p ? 0.05) in resting heart rate of training groups when compared to control group

    Absence of Domain Wall Roughening in a Transverse Field Ising Model with Long-Range Interactions

    We investigate roughening transitions in the context of transverse-field Ising models. As a modification of the transverse Ising model with short range interactions, which has been shown to exhibit domain wall roughening, we have looked into the possibility of a roughening transition for the case of long-range interactions, since such a system is physically realized in the insulator LiHoF4. The combination of strong Ising anisotropy and long-range forces lead naturally to the formation of domain walls but we find that the long-range forces destroy the roughening transition.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, revtex
