Mesoscopic Effects in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime: Chiral Luttinger versus Fermi Liquid

We study tunneling through an edge state formed around an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall regime using Wen's chiral Luttinger liquid theory extended to include mesoscopic effects. We identify a new regime where the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude exhibits a distinctive crossover from Luttinger liquid power-law behavior to Fermi-liquid-like behavior as the temperature is increased. Near the crossover temperature the amplitude has a pronounced maximum. This non-monotonic behavior and novel high-temperature nonlinear phenomena that we also predict provide new ways to distinguish experimentally between Luttinger and Fermi liquids.Comment: 13 pages, Revtex, Figure available from [email protected]

Examining the broadband emission spectrum of WASP-19b: A new z band eclipse detection

WASP-19b is one of the most irradiated hot-Jupiters known. Its secondary eclipse is the deepest of all transiting planets, and has been measured in multiple optical and infrared bands. We obtained a z band eclipse observation, with measured depth of 0.080 +/- 0.029 %, using the 2m Faulkes Telescope South, that is consistent with the results of previous observations. We combine our measurement of the z band eclipse with previous observations to explore atmosphere models of WASP-19b that are consistent with the its broadband spectrum. We use the VSTAR radiative transfer code to examine the effect of varying pressure-temperature profiles and C/O abundance ratios on the emission spectrum of the planet. We find models with super-solar carbon enrichment best match the observations, consistent with previous model retrieval studies. We also include upper atmosphere haze as another dimension in the interpretation of exoplanet emission spectra, and find that particles <0.5 micron in size are unlikely to be present in WASP-19b.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Ap

We have extracted, digitized, and analyzed information about bowhead whales, Balaena mysticetus, contained in records of whaling cruises that were undertaken in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas from 1849 to 1914. Our database consists of 65,000 days of observations which provide insights into whether this bowhead stock may comprise more than one population

Unplanned Category Purchase Incidence: Who Does It, How Often, and Why

Unplanned category purchase incidence is an important source of retailer volume and profits. We analyze this phenomenon in detail with a multi-level Poisson model calibrated on data from 434 households making over 18,000 purchases in 58 categories across 3,000 trips to 21 stores. We find that unplanned category purchase incidence is not proportional to the number of categories bought, and not a single shopping trip is completely unplanned. The majority of variation is across shoppers. Specifically, it is explained in part by demographic variables traditionally measured by marketers, but more by other traits that reflect long-run shopping habits such as level of planning and information gathering styles. Short term shopping goals (e.g., major trip, forgotten needs, etc.) also play an important role. We replicate classic results of time available (more unplanned purchasing) and high store knowledge (less unplanned purchasing); however we find that the overall occurrence of unplanned purchasing is significantly lower than that commonly reported
