BIKE: Bilingual Keyphrase Experiments
This paper presents a novel strategy for translating lists
of keyphrases. Typical keyphrase lists appear in
scientific articles, information retrieval systems and
web page meta-data. Our system combines a statistical
translation model trained on a bilingual corpus of
scientific papers with sense-focused look-up in a large
bilingual terminological resource. For the latter,
we developed a novel technique that benefits from viewing
the keyphrase list as contextual help for sense
disambiguation. The optimal combination of modules was
discovered by a genetic algorithm. Our work applies to

The Effects of Market Survey Rates, Job Evaluation and Job Gender on Job Pay
The present study investigates the effects of current pay, market surveys, job evaluation points, job gender, and rater sex on pay rates for jobs. 406 compensation administrators assigned new pay rates to nine jobs in one of two matched job sets: either all predominantly female, or all predominantly male. The two sets were matched on all quantitative data (current rate, market rate, and job evaluation points), but varied in terms of job titles and descriptions. Multiple analyses of variance and regression analyses were performed to determine whether job gender had a significant effect on assigned pay rates, holding other factors constant. Regardless of the analysis employed, no evidence of gender bias was found. Limitations and suggestions for future research are offered

This paper presents a system for bilingual information retrieval using commercial off-the-shelf search engines (COTS). Several custom query construction, expansion and translation strategies are compared. We present the experiments and the corresponding results for the CLEF 2004 event
Pose Embeddings: A Deep Architecture for Learning to Match Human Poses
We present a method for learning an embedding that places images of humans in
similar poses nearby. This embedding can be used as a direct method of
comparing images based on human pose, avoiding potential challenges of
estimating body joint positions. Pose embedding learning is formulated under a
triplet-based distance criterion. A deep architecture is used to allow learning
of a representation capable of making distinctions between different poses.
Experiments on human pose matching and retrieval from video data demonstrate
the potential of the method

The use of willingness to pay experiments : estimating demand for piped water connections in Sri Lanka
The authors show how willingness to pay surveys can be used to gauge household demand for improved network water and sanitation services. They do this by presenting a case-study from Sri Lanka, where they surveyed approximately 1,800 households in 2003. Using multivariate regression, they show that a complex combination of factors drives demand for service improvements. While poverty and costs are found to be key determinants of demand, the authors also find that location, self-provision, and perceptions matter as well, and that subsets of these factors matter differently for subsamples of the population. To evaluate the policy implications of the demand analysis, they use the model to estimate uptake rates of improved service under various scenarios-demand in subgroups, the institutional decision to rely on private sector provision, and various financial incentives targeted to the poor. The simulations show that in this particular environment in Sri Lanka, demand for piped water services is low, and that it is unlikely that under the present circumstances the goal of nearly universal piped water coverage is going to be achieved. Serendipity observations of far infrared cirrus emission in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey: Analysis of far-infrared correlations
We present an analysis of far-infrared dust emission from diffuse cirrus
clouds. This study is based on serendipitous observations at 160 microns at
high galactic latitude with the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) onboard the
Spitzer Space Telescope by the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS).
These observations are complemented with IRIS data at 100 and 60 microns and
constitute one of the most sensitive and unbiased samples of far infrared
observations at small scale of diffuse interstellar clouds. Outside regions
dominated by the cosmic infrared background fluctuations, we observe a
substantial scatter in the 160/100 colors from cirrus emission. We compared the
160/100 color variations to 60/100 colors in the same fields and find a trend
of decreasing 60/100 with increasing 160/100. This trend can not be accounted
for by current dust models by changing solely the interstellar radiation field.
It requires a significant change of dust properties such as grain size
distribution or emissivity or a mixing of clouds in different physical
conditions along the line of sight. These variations are important as a
