    Monitoring and predicting tropical cyclone movement using geosynchronous satellite remote sensing techniques

    Data collected on special hurricane days by the VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) instrument flown on a satellite in 1981 and 1982 were studied for their usefulness in forecasting motion of hurricanes. The retrieved constant pressure heights for the 500-mb surface provided the basis for reasonable forecasts of 24 hour hurricane motion. The conclusions are illustrated with examples from Hurricane Harvey (1981) and Hurricane Irene (1981). Recommendations are made for future use of the VAS type instruments for tropical cyclone forecasting

    A wind-tunnel investigation was conducted in the Langley V/STOL tunnel to determine the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a six-fan, tip-driven (remote) lift-fan VTOL transport throughout transition. The large midspan lift-fan pods and cruise fans were removed to determine their influence on the stability and control of the configuration. Data were obtained in the hovering mode for ranges of model height above ground. The data are presented without analysis or discussion

    A qualitative exploration of consumers’ perceived impacts, behavioural reactions, and future reflections of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (2017) as applied to electronic cigarettes

    Background: Electronic cigarette regulations included in the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), Article 20, implemented in Europe by May 2017, aimed to improve safety for e-cigarette consumers, and prevent uptake among non-smokers, particularly young people. Before implementation, there were significant concerns from consumers, industry, and some in the scientific community about the potential negative impact of the TPD on people using e-cigarettes to stay stopped from smoking. To date, there is limited evidence on how the TPD has affected consumers. This study aimed to add insight into how consumers perceived and experienced the regulations. Methods: Qualitative data, collected between March 2018 and March 2019, relating to participant views of the TPD were extracted from 160 interviews/extended surveys of e-cigarette consumers as part of a wider study into e-cigarette use trajectories (ECtra study). Data were thematically analysed. Results: Awareness of the TPD amongst consumers was not universal. Participants’ smoking behaviour did not appear to be influenced by the legislation. Participants were reassured by manufacturing regulations and requirements for ingredients labels. Participants responded negatively to changes perceived to cause inconvenience and extra plastic waste. The product restrictions prompted some participants to purchase non-compliant products illegally, potentially putting their safety at risk. Conclusions: E-cigarette regulation should focus on ensuring product safety. Raising awareness of the TPD amongst consumers and smokers could be beneficial

    Effect of Pylon Wake with and Without Pylon Blowing on Propeller Thrust

    Pylon trailing edge blowing was investigated as a means of alleviating the effects of the pylon wake on a pusher arrangement of an advanced single-rotation turboprop. Measurements were made of steady-state propeller thrust and pylon wake pressures and turbulence levels with and without blowing. Results show that the pylon trailing edge blowing practically eliminated the pylon wake, significantly reduced the pylon wake turbulence, and had a relatively small effect on the steady-state propeller thrust. The data are presented with a minimum of analysis

    Wind Tunnel Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Transport-type Airfoil in a Simulated Heavy Rain Environment

    The effects of simulated heavy rain on the aerodynamic characteristics of an NACA 64-210 airfoil section equipped with leading-and trailing-edge high-lift devices were investigated in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. The model had a chord of 2.5 ft, a span of 8 ft, and was mounted on the tunnel centerline between two large endplates. Aerodynamic measurements in and out of the simulated rain environment were obtained for dynamic pressures of 30 and 50 psf and an angle-of-attack range of 0 to 20 degrees for the cruise configuration. The rain intensity was varied to produce liquid water contents ranging from 16 to 46 gm/cu m. The results obtained for various rain intensity levels and tunnel speeds showed significant losses in maximum lift capability and increases in drag for a given lift as the liquid water content was increased. The results obtained on the landing configuration also indicate a progressive decrease in the angle of attack at which maximum lift occurred and an increase in the slope of the pitching-moment curve as the liquid water content was increased. The sensitivity of test results to the effects of the water surface tension was also investigated. A chemical was introduced into the rain environment that reduced the surface tension of water by a factor of 2. The reduction in the surface tension of water did not significantly alter the level of performance losses for the landing configuration

    Towards robust aero-thermodynamic predictions for re-usable single-stage to orbit vehicles

    Re-usable single stage to orbit launch vehicles promise to reduce the cost of access to space, but their success will be particularly reliant on accurate and robust modelling of their aero-thermodynamic characteristics. For preliminary design and optimization studies, relatively simple numerical prediction techniques must perforce be used, but it is important that the uncertainty that is inherent in the predictions of these models be understood. Predictions of surface pressure and heat transfer obtained using a new reduced-order model that is based on the Newtonian flow assumption and the Reynolds analogy for heating are compared against those of a more physically-sophisticated Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method in order to determine the ability of the model to capture the aero-thermodynamics of vehicles with very complex configuration even when run at low enough resolution to be practical in the context of design optimization studies. Attention is focused on the high-altitude regime where lifting re-usable Single-Stage to Orbit configurations will experience their greatest thermal load during re-entry, but where non-continuum effects within the gas of the atmosphere might be important. It is shown that the reduced-order model is capable of reproducing the results of the more complex Monte Carlo formalism with surprising fidelity, but that residual uncertainties exist, particularly in the behaviour of the heating models and in the applicability of the continuum assumption given the onset of finite slip velocity on surface of vehicle. The results suggest thus that, if used with care, reduced-order models such as those described here can be used very effectively in the design and optimization of space-access vehicles with very complex configuration, as long as their predictions are adequately supported by the use of more sophisticated computational techniques

    Overview of the Langley subsonic research effort on SCR configuration

    Recent advances achieved in the subsonic aerodynamics of low aspect ratio, highly swept wing designs are summarized. The most significant of these advances was the development of leading edge deflection concepts which effectively reduce leading edge flow separation. The improved flow attachment results in substantial improvements in low speed performance, significant delay of longitudinal pitch up, increased trailing edge flap effectiveness, and increased lateral control capability. Various additional theoretical and/or experimental studies are considered which, in conjunction with the leading edge deflection studies, form the basis for future subsonic research effort

    An investigation of the existence of a surface water layer on aircraft radomes during simulated flight in heavy precipitation

    An experiment to investigate the electromagnetic attenuation effects of an impacting water spray on an aircraft weather radome was conducted in Langley's 4 X 7 m. wind tunnel equipped with a water spray system. Results indicate no significant liquid water film formed at the stagnation point of the radome under the test conditions. However, a water sheath was observed standing away from the radome surface, which could possibly have significant attenuation properties of its own. Due to the lack of fidelity in modeling both the natural environment with the tunnel apparatus and the water sheath, it is recommended that further studies be undertaken to better define the water distribution in the vicinity of the radome and measure its effect on weather radar performance
