Produktionsordböcker – vad är det?

What lexical assistance could be useful in second-language production? Lexicographerswould probably say something about active dictionaries. So what is anactive dictionary (or a dictionary of encoding or production) for L2 production?It is nota learner's dictionary in the Longman and COBUILD tradition, neither is itjust a bilingual dictionary. In fäet, there is something to be said for various aspects ofboth traditions. A good, active tool for L2 production should help the learner to producean L2 text, using correct syntax and idiomatic expressions. There are two waysleading to this goal. One way is going deeper - much deeper - into the contrastivedescription of the languages involved, including definition, valency data, contrastingsemantic fields and collocations. The other way leads the leamer back to the languagesurface by using parallell corpora. This is one example of lexicography at the crossroads.The concept of dictionary is becoming more and more heterogeneous

Brolexikon

The Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary (1987) introduced a new concept in lexicography in the shape of a new style of definition. A new step has now been taken in the direction of a bilingual dictionary based on this new type of definition, the so-called "bridge dictionary". These dictionaries - one of them has been published already - are meant to "bridge" the gap between monolingual and bilingual dictionaries by translating definitions. This will make it easier for the reader to use the dictionary, since definitions have been a stumbling-block for foreign readers. The bridge dictionary style of definition is discussed, especially the syntactic problems caused by mixing two languages. A new borderline between the languages is suggested by the author

Rätt och fel i korpusen

Today, language corpora are necessary requisites for the compiling of dictionaries. But to what extent should they have an impact on the lexical description? Opinions differ between lexicographers who use the corpus more or less as an inspiration for lexical description and those who rely heavily on corpus data (e.g. the wording of examples in Collins COBUILD). To what extent is a corpus reliable as a source for lexical data? This question is discussed against the background of a new Dutch spelling guide based on a 50 million word corpus

Ord som går i pension Om arbetet att rensa bort gamla ord i SAOL

The paper tackles the problem of identification and deletion of obsolete words in the present edition ofthe Swedish Academy Glossary (the Swcdish abbreviation is SAOL). The first edition was publishedin 1874 and the different editors have put more effort into the introduction ofnew words than into thedeletion of old ones. The vocabulary ofthe 12th edition was compared with a modem corpus of some90 million words and surprisingly many of the words in SAOL did not appear in the corpus. A substantialnumber of these words will have lo be delcted. The paper discusses the thoughts behind and themethods for such a deletion

Översättaren och ordboken

It seems obvious that translators will need dictionaries in the process of translating. But dictionmy use will differ according to the direction of the translation, the translator' s competence and text register. In this paper, the active bilingual dictionary used by the non-professional translator is focused and its shortcomings are discussed. The need of corpus data, notably parallell texts, is pointed out as a complement to the bilingual dictionmy. The case is demonstrated by a comparison between equivalents recommended in a comprehensive bilingual Swedish dictionary and corpus data from parallell texts

Inlärningslexikon

Uppsatsen innehåller dels en allmän diskussion om inlärningsordböcker (=learner's dictionaries), dels några förslag angående utformningen av tre typer av information i sådana ordböcker: definitionerna, kontextuell information (valensuppgifter) och information om kollokationer. Bl. a. diskuteras a) COBUll..D-inspirerade definitioner, där den syntaktiska utbytbarheten uppges b) valensangivelser av såväl implicit som explicit slag c) anordning av kollokationer på grundval av den semantiska relationen mellan de båda komponenterna i kollokationen
