Game Based Learning for Safety and Security Education
Safety and security education are important part of technology related education, because of recent number of increase in safety and security related incidents. Game based learning is an emerging and rapidly advancing forms of computer-assisted instruction. Game based learning for safety and security education enables students to learn concepts and skills without the risk of physical injury and security breach. In this paper, a pedestal grinder safety game and physical security game have been developed using industrial standard modeling and game development software. The average score of the knowledge test of grinder safety game was 82%, which is higher than traditional lecture only instruction method. In addition, the survey of physical security game shows 84% average satisfaction ratio from high school students who played the game during the summer camp. The results of these studies indicated that game based learning method can enhance students' learning without potential harm to the students
Scattering in and Symmetric Multimode Waveguides: Generalized Conservation Laws and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking beyond One Dimension
We extend the generalize conservation law of light propagating in a
one-dimensional -symmetric system, i.e., for the
transmittance and the reflectance from the left and right, to a
multimode waveguide with either or symmetry, in which
higher dimensional investigations are necessary. These conservation laws exist
not only in a matrix form for the transmission and reflection matrices; they
also exist in a scalar form for real-valued quantities by defining generalized
transmittance and reflectance. We then discuss, for the first time, how a
multimode -symmetric waveguide can be used to observe spontaneous
symmetry breaking of the scattering matrix, which typically requires tuning the
non-hermiticity of the system (i.e. the strength of gain and loss). Here the
advantage of using a multimode waveguide is the elimination of tuning any
system parameters: the transverse mode order plays the role of the symmetry
breaking parameter, and one observes the symmetry breaking by simply performing
scattering experiment in each waveguide channel at a single frequency and fixed

Do methanethiol adsorbates on the Au(111) surface dissociate?
The interaction of methanethiol molecules CHSH with the Au(111) surface
is investigated, and it is found for the first time that the S-H bond remains
intact when the methanethiol molecules are adsorbed on the regular Au(111)
surface. However, it breaks if defects are present in the Au(111) surface. At
low coverage, the fcc region is favored for S atom adsorption, but at saturated
coverage the adsorption energies at various sites are almost iso-energetic. The
presented calculations show that a methanethiol layer on the regular Au(111)

Sampled Weighted Min-Hashing for Large-Scale Topic Mining
We present Sampled Weighted Min-Hashing (SWMH), a randomized approach to
automatically mine topics from large-scale corpora. SWMH generates multiple
random partitions of the corpus vocabulary based on term co-occurrence and
agglomerates highly overlapping inter-partition cells to produce the mined
topics. While other approaches define a topic as a probabilistic distribution
over a vocabulary, SWMH topics are ordered subsets of such vocabulary.
Interestingly, the topics mined by SWMH underlie themes from the corpus at
different levels of granularity. We extensively evaluate the meaningfulness of
the mined topics both qualitatively and quantitatively on the NIPS (1.7 K
documents), 20 Newsgroups (20 K), Reuters (800 K) and Wikipedia (4 M) corpora.
Additionally, we compare the quality of SWMH with Online LDA topics for

A double bounded key identity for Goellnitz's (big) partition theorem
Given integers i,j,k,L,M, we establish a new double bounded q-series identity
from which the three parameter (i,j,k) key identity of Alladi-Andrews-Gordon
for Goellnitz's (big) theorem follows if L, M tend to infinity. When L = M, the
identity yields a strong refinement of Goellnitz's theorem with a bound on the
parts given by L. This is the first time a bounded version of Goellnitz's (big)
theorem has been proved. This leads to new bounded versions of Jacobi's triple

Regulation of eosinophilia and allergic airway inflammation by the glycan-binding protein galectin-1
Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a glycan-binding protein with broad antiinflammatory activities, functions as a proresolving mediator in autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disorders. However, its role in allergic airway inflammation has not yet been elucidated. We evaluated the effects of Gal-1 on eosinophil function and its role in a mouse model of allergic asthma. Allergen exposure resulted in airway recruitment of Gal-1-expressing inflammatory cells, including eosinophils, as well as increased Gal-1 in extracellular spaces in the lungs. In vitro, extracellular Gal-1 exerted divergent effects on eosinophils that were N-glycan- And dose-dependent. At concentrations ≤0.25 μM, Gal-1 increased eosinophil adhesion to vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, caused redistribution of integrin CD49d to the periphery and cell clustering, but inhibited ERK(1/2) activation and eotaxin-1-induced migration. Exposure to concentrations ≥1 μM resulted in ERK(1/2)- dependent apoptosis and disruption of the F- Actin cytoskeleton. At lower concentrations, Gal-1 did not alter expression of adhesion molecules (CD49d, CD18, CD11a, CD11b, L-selectin) or of the chemokine receptor CCR3, but decreased CD49d and CCR3 was observed in eosinophils treated with higher concentrations of this lectin. In vivo, allergen-challenged Gal-1-deficient mice exhibited increased recruitment of eosinophils and CD3+ T lymphocytes in the airways as well as elevated peripheral blood and bone marrow eosinophils relative to corresponding WT mice. Further, these mice had an increased propensity to develop airway hyperresponsiveness and displayed significantly elevated levels of TNF-α in lung tissue. This study suggests that Gal-1 can limit eosinophil recruitment to allergic airways and suppresses airway inflammation by inhibiting cell migration and promoting eosinophil apoptosis.Fil: Ge, Xiao Na. The Design for a Nanoscale Single-Photon Spin Splitter
We propose using the effective spin-orbit interaction of light in
Bragg-modulated cylindrical waveguides for the effcient separation of spin-up
and spin-down photons emitted by a single photon emitter. Due to the spin and
directional dependence of photonic stopbands in the waveguides, spin-up (down)
photon propagation in the negative (positive) direction along the waveguide
axis is blocked while the same photon freely propagates in the opposite

Neutrino mixing with broken symmetry
We explore the consequences of assuming that the neutrino mass matrix is a
linear combination of the matrices of a three dimensional representation of the
group and that it has one zero mass eigenvalue. When implemented, these
two assumptions allow us to express the transformation matrix relating the mass
eigenstates to the flavor eigenstates in terms of a single parameter which we
