    Eddie Plank (1875-1926) Baseball great. One of the most dominant pitchers of the twentieth century. Gettysburg Eddie compiled a record of 326-194 in a 17-year career (1901-17), mostly with the Philadelphia Athletics. He won 20 games or more eight times and helped the A\u27s win six pennants and three world championships. Plank was born [near this spot], attended Gettysburg Academy, and retired and died in Gettysburg. Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, 1946.     Water Condensation Collection for Disaster Relief

    Numerous populations experience sudden, unexpected circumstances where drinking water supply may be compromised. Current leading response strategies include the delivery of disposable water bottles, a simple and effective way of meeting the demand of fresh drinking water. The lack of reusability results in problems with waste and cost. Any response to provide drinking water to a population in these circumstances must consider a prolonged crisis and these limitations: minimal delivery opportunities, power supply, and waste management (e.g., aftereffects of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico). A review of alternatives for water collection was done to determine a viable collection method that produces less waste and is reusable. The study revealed that water bottles are the most reliable strategy for providing drinking water immediately to a population of one or 200,000. It was determined that a strategy using wire mesh fog collectors are best for providing populations of 1 or 200,000 over sixty days. Fog collectors are not consistent and are reliant on optimal conditions but could be used in tandem with water bottle deliveries to meet potable water demands while producing less waste

    Rapidly solidified NiAl and FeAl

    Melt spinning was used to produce rapidly solidified ribbons of the B2 intermetallics NiAl and FeAl. Both Fe-40Al and Fe-45Al possessed some bend ductility in the as spun condition. The bend ductility of Fe-40Al, Fe-45Al, and equiatomic NiAl increased with subsequent heat treatment. Heat treatment at approximately 0.85 T (sub m) resulted in significant grain growth in equiatomic FeAl and in all the NiAl compositions. Low bend ductility in both FeAl and NiAl generally coincided with intergranular failure, while increased bend ductility was characterized by increasing amounts of transgranular cleavage fracture

    Tensile behavior of Fe-40Al alloys with B and Zr additions

    Both Fe-40Al and Fe-40Al-0.1Zr with and without B were produced by the hot extrusion of powdered metal. Tensile properties were determined from room temperature to 1100 K in air. All of the materials possessed some ductility at room temperature, and addition of B caused an increase in ductility and a change in fracture mode from intergranular to transgranular cleavage. At high temperatures, failure was caused primarily by the formation of grain boundary cavities in all of the alloys. The effect of Zr addition was unclear because of the complexity of the various microstructures. Comparison of air and vacuum testing at high temperatures revealed that an apparent oxidation assisted mechanism reduced high temperature ductility in these alloys, especially at 900 K

    Alloys based on FeAl are attractive alternate materials for environmental resistance at intermediate temperatures. Addition of small amounts of Nb, Hf, Ta, Mo, Zr, and B were shown to improve the compressive creep of this alloy at 1100 K. Boron, in particular, was found to have a synergistic effect along with Zr in providing properties substantially better than the binary alloy. This improvement seems to be related to the higher activation energy found for this alloy, suggesting a modification in the diffusion behavior due to the alloying additions

    An Analysis of Social Behaviors in Stressful Situations Using Q-Sort Data

    Theories suggest that humans may respond to stressful situations by engaging in certain social behaviors aimed at minimizing the effects of stress. Though these social responses during stress have been investigated in many ways, this study adds to the literature by using a standardized Q-sort technique to examine them. When participants characterized situations as more stressful, they reported a greater tendency to distance themselves from others and lesser expressions of warmth. For female participants only, when situations were described as more anxiety-inducing, participants reported greater seeking of assurance. Though male and female participants did not differ with respect to their reports of the stressfulness of situations, they did differ with respect to their reported behaviors in those situations, with female participants reporting more expressing of warmth and male participants reporting more distancing from others.Faculty Sponsor: Diane B.     Potential High-Temperature Shape-Memory-Alloy Actuator Material Identified

    Shape-memory alloys are unique "smart materials" that can be used in a wide variety of adaptive or "intelligent" components. Because of a martensitic solid-state phase transformation in these materials, they can display rather unusual mechanical properties including shape-memory behavior. This phenomenon occurs when the material is deformed at low temperatures (below the martensite finish temperature, Mf) and then heated through the martensite-to-austenite phase transformation. As the material is heated to the austenite finish temperature Af, it is able to recover its predeformed shape. If a bias is applied to the material as it tries to recover its original shape, work can be extracted from the shape-memory alloy as it transforms. Therefore, shape-memory alloys are being considered for compact solid-state actuation devices to replace hydraulic, pneumatic, or motor-driven systems

    College completion predicts lower depression but higher metabolic syndrome among disadvantaged minorities in young adulthood

    College graduates enjoy healthier, longer lives compared with individuals who do not graduate from college. However, the health benefit of educational attainment is not as great for blacks as it is for whites. Moreover, college completion may not erase the detrimental effects of early-life disadvantage for blacks and Hispanics. We use nationally representative data on young adults to test whether American minorities experience differential returns to educational attainment. We find that college completion predicts lower rates of depression for all racial groups. It also predicts lower metabolic syndrome among whites. However, college completion predicts higher metabolic syndrome among black and Hispanic adults from disadvantaged backgrounds, suggesting upward mobility may come at a health cost to young minorities in America
