A Polynomial Spectral Calculus for Analysis of DG Spectral Element Methods

We introduce a polynomial spectral calculus that follows from the summation by parts property of the Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto quadrature. We use the calculus to simplify the analysis of two multidimensional discontinuous Galerkin spectral element approximations

High energy Coulomb-scattered electrons for relativistic particle beam diagnostics

A new system used for monitoring energetic Coulomb-scattered electrons as the main diagnostic for accurately aligning the electron and ion beams in the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) electron lenses is described in detail. The theory of electron scattering from relativistic ions is developed and applied to the design and implementation of the system used to achieve and maintain the alignment. Commissioning with gold and 3He beams is then described as well as the successful utilization of the new system during the 2015 RHIC polarized proton run. Systematic errors of the new method are then estimated. Finally, some possible future applications of Coulomb-scattered electrons for beam diagnostics are briefly discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 23 figure

A forensic investigation on the persistence of organic gunshot residues

Gunshot residues (GSR) are a potential form of forensic traces in firearm-related events. In most forensic laboratories, GSR analyses focus on the detection and characterisation of the inorganic components (IGSR), which are mainly particles containing mixtures of lead, barium and antimony originating from the primer. The increasing prevalence of heavy metal-free ammunition challenges the current protocols used for IGSR analysis. To provide complementary information to IGSR particles, the current study concentrated on the organic components (OGSR) arising from the combustion of the propellant. The study focused on four compounds well-known as being part of OGSR: ethylcentralite (EC), methylcentralite (MC), diphenylamine (DPA), N-nitrosodiphenylamine (N-nDPA). This study assessed the retention of these OGSR traces on a shooter’s hands. The overall project aim was to provide appropriate information regarding OGSR persistence, which can be suitable to be integrated into the interpretation framework of OGSR as recommended by the recent ENFSI Guideline for Evaluative Reporting in Forensic Science. The persistence was studied through several intervals ranging from immediately after discharge to four hours and two ammunition calibres were chosen: .40 S&W calibre, used by the NSW Police Force; and .357 Magnum, which is frequently encountered in Australian casework. This study successfully detected the compounds of interest up to four hours after discharge. The trends displayed a large decrease in the amount detected during the first hour. A large variability was also observed due to numerous factors involved in the production, deposition and collection of OGSR

TIGIT expressing CD4+T cells represent a tumor-supportive T cell subset in chronic lymphocytic leukemia

While research on T cell exhaustion in context of cancer particularly focuses on CD8C cytotoxic T cells, the role of inhibitory receptors on CD4C T-helper cells have remained largely unexplored. TIGIT is a recently identified inhibitory receptor on T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. In this study, we examined TIGIT expression on T cell subsets from CLL patients. While we did not observe any differences in TIGIT expression in CD8C T cells of healthy controls and CLL cells, we found an enrichment of TIGITC T cells in the CD4C T cell compartment in CLL. Intriguingly, CLL patients with an advanced disease stage displayed elevated numbers of CD4C TIGITC T cells compared to low risk patients. Autologous CLL-T cell co-culture assays revealed that depleting CD4C TIGITC expressing T cells from co-cultures significantly decreased CLL viability. Accordingly, a supportive effect of TIGITCCD4C T cells on CLL cells in vitro could be recapitulated by blocking the interaction of TIGIT with its ligands using TIGIT-Fc molecules, which also impeded the T cell specific production of CLL-prosurvival cytokines. Our data reveal that TIGITCCD4CT cells provide a supportive microenvironment for CLL cells, representing a potential therapeutic target for CLL treatment

Polarization transfer in Rayleigh scattering of hard x-rays

Wereport on the first elastic hard x-ray scattering experiment where the linear polarizationcharacteristics of both the incident and the scattered radiation were observed. Rayleigh scattering wasinvestigated in a relativistic regime by using a high-Z target material, namely gold, and a photon energyof 175keV. Although the incident synchrotron radiation was nearly 100% linearly polarized, at ascattering angle of q = 90we observed a strong depolarization for the scattered photonswith adegree of linear polarization of +0.27% 0.12%only. This finding agreeswith second-orderquantum electrodynamics calculations of Rayleigh scattering, when taking into account a smallpolarization impurity of the incident photon beam which was determined to be close to 98%. Thelatter value was obtained independently from the elastic scattering by analyzing photons that wereCompton-scattered in the target. Moreover, our results indicate that when relying on state-of-the-arttheory, Rayleigh scattering could provide a very accurate method to diagnose polarization impuritiesin a broad region of hard x-ray energies
