Brooding and development of Anasterias minuta (Asteroidea: Forcipulata) in Patagonia, Argentina

Brooding, embryonic and larval development, and the influence of environmental and biological factors in tidepool habitats were studied in the sea star, Anasterias minuta, at various sites along ~220 km of the Patagonian coast. This species has a benthic, lecithotrophic development that includes eight distinct developmental stages. A larval organ, the connection cord, is developed from a small preoral lobe at early stages of development and becomes larger and thinner at advanced stages. Fecundity and average egg size increased with female body size. The regression of log egg number to log sea-star size and weight at different sites had a slope significantly less than 3. 0, resulting in negative allometry and indicating that brood capacity was limited in large females. Development was generally synchronous among sites, but varied within each brood at advanced stages, with more developed brooded larvae located at the periphery of the brood mass. Brooding was synchronous among various populations at different years and spatial scales, and extended over a period of 8 months. The highest proportion of brooding females occurred during May and June (austral winter). Juveniles were released mainly during September. The likelihood of finding brooding sea stars decreased with increasing sea water temperature, tidal height, and wave exposure, and increased with increasing body size. Both body size of brooding females and brooding rate were higher in the infralittoral fringe than at midlittoral levels. A revision of the current model of brooding behavior and development among forcipulate sea stars is given.Fil: Gil, Damian Gaspar.

Mobile devices are becoming the first source for accessing the web due to its practicality and availability. That is why it is important having websites that can be displayed correctly regardless of the access device, with responsive design being the main current design trend. This paper analyzes websites of Argentine universities focusing on the use of responsive design and comparing its main characteristics. Effect of bile acid on the cell membrane functionality of lactic acid bacteria for oral administration

Lactic acid bacteria and other species dwelling in the gut must be tolerant to bile salts. This study sought to determine the effects of the bile salts taurodeoxycholate (TDCA) and deoxycholate (DCA) on Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1098, a strain of likely probiotic value. When compared to other lactobacilli, L. reuteri showed the highest survival rate but remained sensitive to high (>3 mM) DCA concentrations. DCA produced complete permeabilization of cells, abolished glucose uptake and severely distorted the cell envelope, as shown by electron microscopy. Detailed analytical studies revealed a change in the phospholipid to glycolipid ratio, and also in lipid proportions. The C18:1 W9C form remarkably increased, possibly following a rapid adaptive response during DCA treatment. This study provides the first solid evidence of the mechanism of DCA toxicity in a lactic acid bacterium.Fil: Taranto, Maria Pia. Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Objective: To reveal the environmental risk of pesticide prescribed in a border region between the Amazon and Platinum Basins, at the turn of the 21st century. Methods: The study used data of agronomic prescriptions for pesticides issued in the biennium of 1999-2000 in 24 cities located in a border region between the Amazon and Platinum Basins, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Results: The most widely used pesticides in the study region are class II (very dangerous) and III (dangerous) in number of prescriptions (N = 2,828, 86.8%) andquantity prescribed (N = 344,765, 90.4%). Among class III pesticides, a strong inversion was observed in the number of prescriptions (N = 1,274; 39.1%) and quantity prescribed (N = 237,319; 62.2%), indicating a lower number of prescriptions, but with higher amountprescribed. The proportion of prescriptions for products amid the various classes of Potential of Environmental Dangers (PPA ranking model, apllied in Brazil) changed over the two years (c2=20,814; DF=3; p < 0,01). The 10 most prescribed products (11 activecompounds) were: glyphosate, 2,4-D, sulfluramid, chlorimuron ethyl, fipronil, diuron, paraquat, methamidophos, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin, and seven of them were ranked as PPA class I or II. Conclusions: The ratio between the number of pesticide prescriptions and the quantities prescribed among the various classes of PPA showed alteration over crop years. The most reported products in this border region were classified as the most dangerous ones, with diverse mechanisms of action and potential risksto living organisms. This suggests the need to define specific policies and carefully designed strategies to prevent environmental disaster in this region
