    EXIST's Gamma-Ray Burst Sensitivity

We use semi-analytic techniques to evaluate the burst sensitivity of designs for the EXIST hard X-ray survey mission. Applying these techniques to the mission design proposed for the Beyond Einstein program, we find that with its very large field-of-view and faint gamma-ray burst detection threshold, EXIST will detect and localize approximately two bursts per day, a large fraction of which may be at high redshift. We estimate that EXIST's maximum sensitivity will be ~4 times greater than that of Swift's Burst Alert Telescope. Bursts will be localized to better than 40 arcsec at threshold, with a burst position as good as a few arcsec for strong bursts. EXIST's combination of three different detector systems will provide spectra from 3 keV to more than 10 MeV. Thus, EXIST will enable a major leap in the understanding of bursts, their evolution, environment, and utility as cosmological probes.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Ap

Possible Effects of the Proposed East-West Trade Relations Act Upon U.S. Import, Export, and Credit Controls

In 1966, and again in the President\u27s State of the Union message in January 1967, the Administration announced that it would ask Congress to pass an East-West Trade Relations Act. The immediate effect of such legislation would be to permit the President to abolish existing discriminatory restrictions upon imports from the Soviet Union or other Communist countries of Eastern Europe (excluding East Germany), in the context of bilateral commercial agreements designed to provide a framework helpful to private United States firms conducting business relations with Communist state trading agencies. \u27 Such agreements, it is contemplated, would be reached by instituting regular goverment-to-government negotiations with individual Communist countries concerning commercial and other matters of mutual interest. The agreements would have a maximum duration of three years and would be subject to suspension or termination at any time upon reasonable notice

ABSTRACT Searching for secondary metabolites from the wood bark of Durio oxleyanus has afforded two new lignans, namely threo-carolignan Y (1) and erythro-carolignan Y \u27(2) together with three other known lignans erythrocarolignan X (3), boehmenan X (4) and boehmenan (5). The relative configurations of compounds 1 and 2 were establishedby J-based configurationalanalysis and 2D NOESYstudies. Keywords: carolignan, threo, erythro, Durio, Bombacacea

Isolation and absolute configuration of boehmenan from Durio affinis Becc

Boehmenan (1) is a lignan which has two feruloyl moieties at C-9 and C-9' respectively. The structural characterization of (+)-boehmenan was confirmed by H-NMR, C NMR and HRESIMS as well as by direct comparison with the literature. CD measurements established a 7S', 8R' configuration. Cytotoxicity evaluation showed that boehmenan is moderately active against the T47D cell line with IC 13.7 μg/mL and shows weak activity against the HeLa cancer cell line with IC 93.5 μg/mL. Boehmenan is also non-cytotoxic to the Vero cell line. From this study, boehmenan X and erythro-carolignan E were also obtained

Analysis of XMRV integration sites from human prostate cancer tissues suggests PCR contamination rather than genuine human infection

XMRV is a gammaretrovirus associated in some studies with human prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome. Central to the hypothesis of XMRV as a human pathogen is the description of integration sites in DNA from prostate tumour tissues. Here we demonstrate that 2 of 14 patient-derived sites are identical to sites cloned in the same laboratory from experimentally infected DU145 cells. Identical integration sites have never previously been described in any retrovirus infection. We propose that the patient-derived sites are the result of PCR contamination. This observation further undermines the notion that XMRV is a genuine human pathogen

The absolute configurations of spongia-13(16),14-dien-3-one [systematic name: (3bR,5aR,9aR,9bR)-3b,6,6,9a-tetra-methyl-4,5,5a,6,8,9,9a,9b,10,11-deca- hydro-phenanthro[1,2-c]furan-7(3bH)-one], C20H28O2, (I), epispongiadiol [systematic name: (3bR,5aR,6S,7R,9aR,9bR)-7-hydr-oxy-6-hydroxy-methyl-3b,6,9a- trimethyl-3b,5,5a,6,7,9,9a,9b,10,11-deca-hydro-phenanthro[1,2-c]furan-8(4H)-one] , C20H28O4, (II), and spongiadiol [systematic name: (3bR,5aR,6S,7S,9aR,9bR)-7- hydr-oxy-6-hy-droxy-methyl-3b,6,9a-trimethyl-3b,5,5a,6,7,9,9a,9b,10, 11-deca-hydro-phenanthro[1,2-c]furan-8(4H)-one], C20H28O4, (III), were assigned by analysis of anomalous dispersion data collected at 130 K with Cu K radiation. Compounds (II) and (III) are epimers. The equatorial 3-hydroxyl group on the cyclo-hexa-none ring (A) of (II) is syn with respect to the 4-hydroxy-methyl group, leading to a chair conformation. In contrast, isomer (III), where the 3-hydroxyl group is anti to the 4-hydroxy-methyl group, is conformationally disordered between a major chair conformer where the OH group is axial and a minor boat conformer where it is equatorial. In compound (I), a carbonyl group is present at position 3 and ring A adopts a distorted-boat conformation
