Characterizing level IV students’ use of Engagement resources in academic writing in English: an exploratory study from a systemic functional perspective

An important aspect of successful academic writing involves establishing a dialogical space through proper interaction with readers and acknowledgment of sources and ideas. In the Systemic Functional Linguistics framework, this interactive function of language is studied within the ENGAGEMENT subsystem of the APPRAISAL system. Given that university students, including students at Universidad del Norte, must master academic writing skills to demonstrate analytical skills, share knowledge and become full members of the academic community, it is necessary that they also master the use of ENGAGEMENT resources. Despite the importance of interpersonal resources, this linguistic function has not been assessed in the English programs at Universidad del Norte. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the language resources denoting interpersonal ENGAGEMENT meanings and to describe the ENGAGEMENT patterns that emerge in Level 4 EFL students’ exposition texts at Universidad del Norte. For these purposes, a qualitative analysis of 20 Level IV short exposition opinion paragraphs belonging to two different topics was undertaken. Results show a higher frequency of Monoglossic, Deny, Counter and Entertain resources. The analysis of rhetorical stages showed results that varied per prompt. One prompt showed a majority of Monoglossic thesis statements and contractive resources in arguments and conclusions. The second prompt showed a majority of Entertain thesis statements while arguments showed a majority of Monoglossic statements with the bulk of Entertain resources grouped in a few students’ paragraphs. Pedagogical implications for teaching suggest that students need higher awareness of interpersonal resources earlier in the curriculum and increased dialogically focused feedback from teachers

Lean logistics management in healthcare: A case study

Objetivo: estudiar la aplicabilidad de los principios del Justo a Tiempo o Just in Time (JIT) o Lean Production a la gestión de la cadena de suministros de un hospital. En concreto, tratamos de conocer qué prácticas y principios de Lean son aplicables, los beneficios que se pueden obtener y las principales barreras para su aplicación. La gestión de la cadena de suministros de los hospitales es un tema importante, tanto por su incidencia en la calidad asistencial como por su impacto en los costes. Métodos: Este trabajo se basa en un estudio de caso durante el periodo 2005-2010. Ámbito: Hospital Virgen Macarena de Sevilla. Proceso de implantación de un plan integral de gestión logística basado en la aplicación de principios Lean y en el desarrollo de inversiones tecnológicas. Resultados: La implantación del plan integral ha reducido los inventarios, disminuido los plazos de entrega y mejorado la calidad del servicio. Asimismo, se han producido otras mejoras importantes: mejora en la satisfacción de los trabajadores e incremento de la productividad del personal, tanto sanitario como del dedicado a tareas logísticas. Conclusiones: La experiencia analizada ha permitido comprobar la aplicabilidad e idoneidad de los principios Lean y de algunas de sus técnicas a la gestión de la logística de hospitales. In particular, we seek to know what Lean practices and principles are applicable, the benefits to be gained and the main barriers for implementation. Managing the supply chain of hospitals is an important issue, both for its effect on the quality of care and its impact on costs. Methods: This study is based on a case study during the period 2005-2010. Scope: Hospital Virgen Macarena in Seville. Process of implementing a comprehensive logistics management plan based on Lean principles and technology investments. Results: The implementation of the comprehensive plan has reduced inventory, reduced lead times and improved service quality. Also, there have been other important improvements: improved worker satisfaction and increased staff productivity, both dedicated to health and the logistics. Antitumoral Effects of Metformin in Ovarian Cancer

In the last years, the antidiabetic drug metformin has received considerable attention in pursuing new drugs for anticancer treatments. Several reports have shown that metformin would have antitumor effects, not only attributable to its systemic effects but also due to direct effects on tumor cells. It has been proposed that metformin could be a suitable alternative for the treatment of gynecological cancers, such as ovarian cancer. This disease is characterized by high cell proliferation and angiogenesis potential, because ovarian cancer cells overexpress most oncogenic molecules including growth factors. La globalización económica está favoreciendo la aparición de campos de estudio que suponen variantes de las principales disciplinas empresariales y que se dedican especialmente a las cuestiones internacionales relacionadas con las mismas, tales como Marketing Internacional o Finanzas Internacionales. No obstante, parece que no en todas las áreas la globalización o intemacionalización ha despertado el mismo interés y, consecuentemente, el nivel de desarrollo de cada una de ellas resulta distinto. Blockade of the Interaction of Calcineurin with FOXO in Astrocytes Protects Against Amyloid-βInduced Neuronal Death

Astrocytes actively participate in neuro-inflammatory processes associated to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and other brain pathologies. We recently showed that an astrocyte-specific intracellular signaling pathway involving an interaction of the phosphatase calcineurin with the transcription factor FOXO3 is a major driver in AD associated pathological inflammation, suggesting a potential new druggable target for this devastating disease. We have now developed decoy molecules to interfere with calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions, and tested them in astrocytes and neuronal co-cultures exposed to amyloid-β (Aβ) toxicity. We observed that interference of calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions exerts a protective action against A-induced neuronal death and favors the production of a set of growth factors that we hypothesize form part of a cytoprotective pathway to resolve inflammation. Furthermore, interference of the A-induced interaction of calcineurin with FOXO3 by decoy compounds significantly decreased amyloid-β protein precursor (AβPP) synthesis, reduced the AβPP amyloidogenic pathway, resulting in lower Alevels, and blocked the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-6 in astrocytes. Collectively, these data indicate that interrupting pro-inflammatory calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions in astrocytes triggered by Aβ accumulation in brain may constitute an effective new therapeutic approach in AD. Future studies with intranasal delivery, or brain barrier permeable decoy compounds, are warranted

Aplicación software embebida para la medida del consumo de energía en nodos inalámbricos de redes de sensores

Hoy en día cada vez se ven más aplicaciones del “Internet de las Cosas” (IoT). Una de sus múltiples facetas son las redes de sensores inteligentes en infraestructuras, que recogen información del entorno, la transmiten y procesan. En el caso de que sean inalámbricos y se alimenten por medio de una batería, el consumo es algo crítico. Un buen análisis del consumo de la red permitirá optimizar las rutinas de comunicación y elegir la batería adecuada. En este proyecto se ha dedicado el esfuerzo en elaborar el software necesario para la correcta medida de consumo de una red de sensores inalámbricos dedicada a la seguridad. Dando unos primeros pasos en este proyecto encontrará el estudio general realizado sobre el análisis del consumo de este tipo de aplicaciones. A continuación, se hablará de todo el proceso de diseño seguido desde los elementos más simples hasta la estructura de medida final completa, junto con el software asociado. En los últimos capítulos, se detallan los resultados obtenidos para el caso de estudio en concreto y las conclusiones derivadas de los mismos. Con todo ello se tratará de mostrar la experiencia adquirida en este campo, además de la importancia de conocer el consumo del sistema implementado. Ya que, en definitiva, este análisis es el paso previo a la necesaria optimización de toda aplicación en cuanto a ahorro de energía, algo que siempre debe tenerse en cuenta y más aún en el futuro.Nowadays, there are more a more “Internet of Things” (IoT), applications. One of its many facets are intelligent sensor networks in infrastructures, which collect information from the environment, and then transmit and process it. In the case that they are wireless and they need to be powered by a battery, consumption is a critical aspect. A good analysis of consumption will allow to optimize the communication routines and to choose the right battery. In this project I have put a lot of effort in design a software for the correct measurement of consumption of a network of wireless sensors dedicated to security. Taking a first steps in this project, we could see the general study on the analysis of the consumption of this type of applications. Next, we will discuss the whole design process, from the simplest elements to the complete final measurement structure, along with the associated software. Finally, we discuss the results obtained for the specific case of study and the conclusions derived from them. In this project I tried to show the experience gained in this field, besides the importance of knowing the consumption of the implemented system. Since, in short, this analysis is the step prior to the necessary optimization of every application related to energy saving. Escenarios de representación histórica en la serialidad contemporánea: la ciudad en los Estados Unidos de América a través de Deadwood

Actas del V Congreso Internacional de Historia y Cine celebrado en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid del 5 al 7 de Septiembre de 2016.Desde sus inicios, la televisión en particular y el cine en general, se han sentido atraídas por las narraciones históricas. Bien por la fuente inagotable de relatos que alberga, bien por una necesidad de volver a períodos pasados con el objetivo de entender el presente mejor, títulos como "Yo, Claudio" (Jack Pullman, BBC. 1976), "La Toma del Poder por Luis XIV" (R. Rossellini, Télévision Fran~aise. 1966), o las más recientes como "Hermanos de Sangre" (Stephen Ambrose, HBO. 2001) o "El Ministerio del Tiempo" (Javier y Pablo Olivares, TVE. 2015), componen un crisol de producciones en las que no se deja período histórico sin ficcionar. La Historia suele ser tratada de dos maneras fundamentales: o bien, por un lado, se escoge un suceso histórico determinado y se narra o bien, a partir de un periodo histórico se construyen una serie de sucesos sin necesidad de que sean veraces, aunque con ciertas cotas de "rigor" (Quizás, el ejemplo paradigmático de esto sea "Roma" (John Milius, HBO. 2005), que desarrolla una ficción narrativa a partir de sucesos históricos). En esta ponencia, que engloba o resume los principios básicos de una investigación en proceso de mayor recorrido, nos centraremos en estudiar el retrato de una ciudad en ciernes, un relato protourbano de un país en construcción, Estados Unidos, a través de la serie televisiva "Deadwood" (David Milch, HBO. 2004). Esta ponencia y la investigación paralela que la acompaña, pretende asentar las bases de un estudio transversal entre la Historia, la Geografía, la Filosofía y el estudio de las imágenes
