Four rural cemeteries in central western NSW: Islands of Australiana in a European sea?

Vascular plants present in groundstoreys of variously–managed areas in four cemeteries in central western NSW – two on the Central Western Slopes (Garra and Toogong) and two on the Central Tablelands (Lyndhurst and Carcoar) – were recorded over periods of 6–10 years. It was hypothesised that (a) areas of the cemeteries with a history of nil or low disturbance would represent high quality remnant vegetation (i.e. contain a diversity of native species but few naturalised species), and (b) that clearing of woody vegetation, together with similar management (e.g. regular mowing) would result in homogenisation of the groundstoreys such that many species, native and naturalised, would be common to all sites. 344 species (176 native, 154 naturalised and 14 non–naturalised exotics) were recorded across the four cemeteries. Many native species that were rare in the surrounding agricultural lands were present in the cemeteries (enhancing their value as conservation areas) but no cemetery contained areas of groundstorey that would qualify as ‘pristine’. Across all management areas, the proportions of naturalised species in the native + naturalised floras of the cemeteries ranged from 46 to 55 %. Though never dominant, naturalised species also comprised high proportions (42 to 51 %) of the floras of the least disturbed (nil or infrequently mown) areas within each cemetery. Many (40 %) of the species recorded occurred at only one cemetery. This partly explained why the floras of similarly– managed parts of cemeteries on the Central Western Slopes were, contrary to expectations, markedly different to those on the Central Tablelands. However, within the same botanic subdivision, floras – particularly of naturalised species in regularly mown grasslands – were more similar (‘homogenised’) than those of nil or infrequently mown grasslands

Random flights governed by Klein-Gordon-type partial differential equations

In this paper we study random flights in R^d with displacements possessing Dirichlet distributions of two different types and uniformly oriented. The randomization of the number of displacements has the form of a generalized Poisson process whose parameters depend on the dimension d. We prove that the distributions of the point X(t) and Y(t), t \geq 0, performing the random flights (with the first and second form of Dirichlet intertimes) are related to Klein-Gordon-type partial differential equations. Our analysis is based on McBride theory of integer powers of hyper-Bessel operators. A special attention is devoted to the three-dimensional case where we are able to obtain the explicit form of the equations governing the law of X(t) and Y(t). In particular we show that that the distribution of Y(t) satisfies a telegraph-type equation with time-varying coefficients

On Some Operators Involving Hadamard Derivatives

In this paper we introduce a novel Mittag--Leffler-type function and study its properties in relation to some integro-differential operators involving Hadamard fractional derivatives or Hyper-Bessel-type operators. We discuss then the utility of these results to solve some integro-differential equations involving these operators by means of operational methods. We show the advantage of our approach through some examples. Among these, an application to a modified Lamb--Bateman integral equation is presented

A redescription and new host record for Dactylogyrus nasutai Narba and Wangchu, 2015 (Platyhelminthes, Monogenea) from Arunachal Pradesh, India using high-resolution microscopy imaging

Dactylogyrus spp. are monogenean ectoparasites that infect economically important fishes in aquaculture worldwide. Currently, over 900 nominal species of Dactylogyrus are known. Dactylogyrus nasutai, originally described from the cyprinid fish Garra nasuta in Arunachal Pradesh, India, is redescribed and illustrated based on high-resolution microscopy imaging of specimens collected from the gills of Garra annandalei. The results reveal previously undescribed morphological traits, such as the accessory piece having a slender tube with serrations along its length and a prominent hook-shaped distal extension and dorsal anchors with notable depressions at the bases and lateral expansion in their shafts. Garra annandalei is the first host record for a monogenean parasite and a new host record for Dactylogyrus nasutai. The results of this study clarify the morpho-taxonomic details that will allow an unambiguous identification of Dactylogyrus nasutai.

Analytic solutions of fractional differential equations by operational methods

We describe a general operational method that can be used in the analysis of fractional initial and boundary value problems with additional analytic conditions. As an example, we derive analytic solutions of some fractional generalisation of differential equations of mathematical physics. Fractionality is obtained by substituting the ordinary integer-order derivative with the Caputo fractional derivative. Furthermore, operational relations between ordinary and fractional differentiation are shown and discussed in detail. Finally, a last example concerns the application of the method to the study of a fractional Poisson process
