1s2s2p23d 6L - 1s2p33d 6D, L=F, D, P Transitions in O IV, F V and Ne VI
We present observations of VUV transitions between doubly excited sextet
states in O IV, F V and Ne VI. Spectra were produced by collisions of an O+
beam with a solid carbon target. We also studied spectra obtained previously of
F V and Ne VI. Some observed lines were assigned to the 1s2s2p23d 6L - 1s2p33d
6D, L=F, D, P electric-dipole transitions, and compared with results of MCHF
(with QED and higher-order corrections) and MCDF calculations. 42 new lines
have been identified. Highly excited sextet states in five-electron ions
provide a new form of energy storage and are possible candidates for VUV and

Electrostatics in a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string
We explicitly determine the expression of the electrostatic potential
generated by a point charge at rest in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by
a cosmic string. We can then calculate the electrostatic self-energy. From
this, we find again the upper entropy bound for a charged object by employing

On the nature of continuous physical quantities in classical and quantum mechanics
Within the traditional Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics, it is
not possible to describe a particle as possessing, simultaneously, a sharp
position value and a sharp momentum value. Is it possible, though, to describe
a particle as possessing just a sharp position value (or just a sharp momentum
value)? Some, such as Teller (Journal of Philosophy, 1979), have thought that
the answer to this question is No -- that the status of individual continuous
quantities is very different in quantum mechanics than in classical mechanics.
On the contrary, I shall show that the same subtle issues arise with respect to
continuous quantities in classical and quantum mechanics; and that it is, after
all, possible to describe a particle as possessing a sharp position value
without altering the standard formalism of quantum mechanics.Comment: 26 pages, LaTe
Nonstationary random acoustic and electromagnetic fields as wave diffusion processes
We investigate the effects of relatively rapid variations of the boundaries
of an overmoded cavity on the stochastic properties of its interior acoustic or
electromagnetic field. For quasi-static variations, this field can be
represented as an ideal incoherent and statistically homogeneous isotropic
random scalar or vector field, respectively. A physical model is constructed
showing that the field dynamics can be characterized as a generalized diffusion
process. The Langevin--It\^{o} and Fokker--Planck equations are derived and
their associated statistics and distributions for the complex analytic field,
its magnitude and energy density are computed. The energy diffusion parameter
is found to be proportional to the square of the ratio of the standard
deviation of the source field to the characteristic time constant of the
dynamic process, but is independent of the initial energy density, to first
order. The energy drift vanishes in the asymptotic limit. The time-energy
probability distribution is in general not separable, as a result of
nonstationarity. A general solution of the Fokker--Planck equation is obtained
in integral form, together with explicit closed-form solutions for several
asymptotic cases. The findings extend known results on statistics and
distributions of quasi-stationary ideal random fields (pure diffusions), which

Experimental and theoretical energy levels, transition probabilities and radiative lifetimes in Yb III
NATO Advanced Study Institute on Advances in Microlocal Analysis
The 1985 Castel vecchio-Pas coli NATO Advanced Study Institute is aimed to complete the trilogy with the two former institutes I organized : "Boundary Value Problem for Evolution Partial Differential Operators", Liege, 1976 and "Singularities in Boundary Value Problems", Maratea, 1980. It was indeed necessary to record the considerable progress realized in the field of the propagation of singularities of Schwartz Distri butions which led recently to the birth of a new branch of Mathema tical Analysis called Microlocal Analysis. Most of this theory was mainly built to be applied to distribution solutions of linear partial differential problems. A large part of this institute still went in this direction. But, on the other hand, it was also time to explore the new trend to use microlocal analysis In non linear differential problems. I hope that the Castelvecchio NATO ASI reached its purposes with the help of the more famous authorities in the field. The meeting was held in Tuscany (Italy) at Castelvecchio-Pascoli, little village in the mountains north of Lucca on September 2-12, 1985. It was hosted by "11 Ciocco" an international vacation Center, In a comfortable hotel located in magnificent mountain surroundings and provided with all conference and sport facilities
