    Chiedza Stewardship Center

    Get PDF
Journeyman International (JI) is a non-profit organization that supports humanitarian projects in countries all around the world by pairing design professionals and overseeing the design and construction of the projects. The Chiedza Stewardship Center is the first phase of a project supported by East African Power and Foundations for Farming. The project is planned to include 200 hectares of a solar farm, 50 homesteads, and a community center including a stewardship center. This project and this report focus on the structural design of the stewardship center. This stewardship center will allow Foundations for Farming to be able to teach local people zero tillage farming around the area of Lake Chivero in Zimbabwe. The design of the structure includes an office, meeting space, a large indoor classroom, and an outdoor classroom. The space is open and all under one single roof, while the outdoor classroom opens directly to agricultural training fields. The design team consisted of one architecture student and one architectural engineering student. This report will focus primarily on the structural design while covering background, research, impact, structural design calculations, and structural drawings for the Chiedza Stewardship Center

4-Archaeological Survey to Determine Prehistoric Settlement Patterns in Allegan County, Michigan: 1978 Field Season

The 1978 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 78) in Allegan County, Michigan, a total of 242 sites were recorded, which could be further defined as 260 components. 243 of these components are prehistoric; 17 are historic. Of the 243 prehistoric components identified, 139 (57%) are of undetermined cultural affiliation, while 104 (43%) can be placed in cultural/chronological context. This report details the locations, environmental settings, and materials recovered from these sites, and an evaluation of the significance of these data is presented.

Preparing Main Street Lawyers: Practicing Without Big Firm Experience

    Get PDF
This Article is the transcript of a panel presented at Emory’s Third Biennial Conference on Transactional Education. The panelists advance two premises: First, that law schools need to teach transactional skills because many students will either focus on transactional law or practice general law where transactional skills are necessary; and second, that some of the transactional skills the schools teach should be specific to main street lawyering because a number of students will be main street lawyers. The panelists explain how the transactional skills necessary for main street lawyering differ from skills needed in litigation and big law firms. They offer ideas of approaches and assignments professors can use in classes and clinics to teach law students the transactional skills necessary for main street lawyering

Semi-empirical analysis of leptons in gases in crossed electric and magnetic fields, Part II: Transverse compression of muon beams

This article employs fluid equations to analyse muon beams in gases subject to crossed electric and magnetic fields, focussing in particular on a scheme proposed by D. Taqqu in 2006, whereby transverse compression of the beam is achieved by creating a density gradient in the gas. A general criterion for maximising beam compression, derived from first principles, is then applied to determine optimal experimental conditions for {\mu ^ +} in helium gas. Although the calculations require input of transport data for ({\mu ^ +}, He), which are generally unavailable, this issue is circumvented by "aliasing" ({\mu ^ +}, He) with (H{^ +}, He), for which transport coefficient data are available

Combinations of isoform-targeted histone deacetylase inhibitors and bryostatin analogues display remarkable potency to activate latent HIV without global T-cell activation

AbstractCurrent antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV/AIDS slows disease progression by reducing viral loads and increasing CD4 counts. Yet ART is not curative due to the persistence of CD4+ T-cell proviral reservoirs that chronically resupply active virus. Elimination of these reservoirs through the administration of synergistic combinations of latency reversing agents (LRAs), such as histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors and protein kinase C (PKC) modulators, provides a promising strategy to reduce if not eradicate the viral reservoir. Here, we demonstrate that largazole and its analogues are isoform-targeted histone deacetylase inhibitors and potent LRAs. Significantly, these isoform-targeted HDAC inhibitors synergize with PKC modulators, namely bryostatin-1 analogues (bryologs). Implementation of this unprecedented LRA combination induces HIV-1 reactivation to unparalleled levels and avoids global T-cell activation within resting CD4+ T-cells.</jats:p
