    Impacts of International Migration and Remittances

    We use original 2005 survey data from Fiji and Tonga on remittances and household income to estimate the combined impact of migration and remittances on the composition of household income. A two-stage methodology is followed. A variable for the predicted number of migrants in each household is generated to control for selectivity in migration. This variable is then used in a 3SLS remittances and income equation system. In neither country do we observe significant impacts on agricultural cash income, but, in relation to other income sources, including subsistence agriculture, wages and non-agricultural business activities, some significant and different effects are found, both positive and negative. These findings suggest that the duration and intensity of remittance-driven migration, and the structure of economic activity within a community are important in understanding the influences of migration and remittances on household resource allocation and production decisions and on the community�s economic transformation.

    Finite scattering amplitudes in field theory

    In this thesis we explore the infrared problem perturbatively in massless field theory. We review the current conventional methods and theorems that are applied in the calculation of QCD jet observables and then discuss the formulation of an alternative approach called the Asymptotic Interaction Picture (AIP). The AIP is based on a unitary transformation such that long-ranged interactions are present in the asymptotic Lagrangian and thus the states associated with this picture are no longer free Fock states but are asymptotic states containing soft and collinear interactions. Under the guidance of the AIP we are led to modifying conventional perturbation theory, cutting up amplitudes in a manner that allows for the construction of infrared finite amplitudes that are in correspondence with the asymptotic states of the AIP. We apply this formalism to several NLO corrections to QCD observables and construct dressed states who's amplitudes are finite in all regions of phase space. Using these amplitudes we compute several observables and show agreement with the conventional calculations in infrared safe regions. Higher-order calculations are then investigated in ϕ (^3)theory and the infrared pole structure is shown to behave as expected such that NNLO corrections to dressed states are obtained. Finally we present part of the NNLO correction to the dressed two-parton amplitude in QCD and show that, with several provisos, this approach may potentially be applied to the precision calculations of observables at the International Linear Collider (ILC). We therefore give a possible alternative to current subtraction methods at NNLO when no initial state radiation is present

    Effects of Exercise Intensity on Postexercise Endothelial Function and Oxidative Stress

    Purpose. To measure endothelial function and oxidative stress immediately, 90 minutes, and three hours after exercise of varying intensities. Methods. Sixteen apparently healthy men completed three exercise bouts of treadmill running for 30 minutes at 55% V˙O2max (mild); 20 minutes at 75% V˙O2max (moderate); or 5 minutes at 100% V˙O2max (maximal) in random order. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was assessed with venous blood samples drawn for measurement of endothelin-1 (ET-1), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOHs), and lipid soluble antioxidants. Results. LOOH increased immediately following moderate exercise (P<0.05). ET-1 was higher immediately after exercise and 3 hours after exercise in the mild trial compared to maximal one (P<0.05). Transient decreases were detected for ΔFMD/ShearAUC from baseline following maximal exercise, but it normalised at 3 hours after exercise (P<0.05). Shear rate was higher immediately after exercise in the maximal trial compared to mild exercise (P<0.05). No changes in baseline diameter, peak diameter, absolute change in diameter, or FMD were observed following any of the exercise trials (P>0.05). Conclusions. Acute exercise at different intensities elicits varied effects on oxidative stress, shear rate, and ET-1 that do not appear to mediate changes in endothelial function measured by FMD

    DEVELOPING THE KOVACS ON HIGH BAR

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tucked Kovacs as a preparatory activity for the development of the more complex straight and full twisting Kovacs. Twin video images of Kovacs (tucked n=7; straight n=3; and full twisting n=5) were collected at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 3D_DLT analyses were used to determine joint angular kinematics and combined with customised body segment inertia parameters to determine normalised angular momenta. Angular kinematic similarities were found between the three Kovacs variants but there were large differences in normalised angular momentum between the tucked and straight Kovacs. Identifying appropriate preparatory activities is desirable to make training more effective, and in particular when trying to increase angular momentum in order to develop the straight from the tucked Kovacs
