Decoherence of Atomic Gases in Largely Detuned Laser Fields
We study theoretically the decoherence of a gas of bosonic atoms induced by
the interaction with a largely detuned laser beam. It is shown that for a
standing laser beam decoherence coincides with the single-particle result. For
a running laser beam many-particle effects lead to significant modifications.Comment: 5 pages, 2 Figures, RevTe
Site investigation for the effects of vegetation on ground stability
The procedure for geotechnical site investigation is well established but little attention is currently given to investigating the potential of vegetation to assist with ground stability. This paper describes how routine investigation procedures may be adapted to consider the effects of the vegetation. It is recommended that the major part of the vegetation investigation is carried out, at relatively low cost, during the preliminary (desk) study phase of the investigation when there is maximum flexibility to take account of findings in the proposed design and construction. The techniques available for investigation of the effects of vegetation are reviewed and references provided for further consideration. As for general geotechnical investigation work, it is important that a balance of effort is maintained in the vegetation investigation between (a) site characterisation (defining and identifying the existing and proposed vegetation to suit the site and ground conditions), (b) testing (in-situ and laboratory testing of the vegetation and root systems to provide design parameters) and (c) modelling (to analyse the vegetation effects)
Parametrization of projector-based witnesses for bipartite systems
Entanglement witnesses are nonpositive Hermitian operators which can detect
the presence of entanglement. In this paper, we provide a general
parametrization for orthonormal basis of and use it to
construct projector-based witness operators for entanglement detection in the
vicinity of pure bipartite states. Our method to parameterize entanglement
witnesses is operationally simple and could be used for doing symbolic and
numerical calculations. As an example we use the method for detecting
entanglement between an atom and the single mode of quantized field, described
by the Jaynes-Cummings model. We also compare the detection of witnesses with
the negativity of the state, and show that in the vicinity of pure stats such
constructed witnesses able to detect entanglement of the state.Comment: 12 pages, four figure
Nonergodic Behavior of Interacting Bosons in Harmonic Traps
We study the time evolution of a system of interacting bosons in a harmonic
trap. In the low-energy regime, the quantum system is not ergodic and displays
rather large fluctuations of the ground state occupation number. In the high
energy regime of classical physics we find nonergodic behavior for modest
numbers of trapped particles. We give two conditions that assure the ergodic
behavior of the quantum system even below the condensation temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 3 PS-figures, uses psfig.st
Frequency and damping of hydrodynamic modes in a trapped Bose-condensed gas
Recently it was shown that the Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamics
describes the collision-dominated region of a trapped Bose condensate
interacting with a thermal cloud. We use these equations to discuss the low
frequency hydrodynamic collective modes in a trapped Bose gas at finite
temperatures. We derive a variational expressions based on these equations for
both the frequency and damping of collective modes. A new feature is our use of
frequency-dependent transport coefficients, which produce a natural cutoff by
eliminating the collisionless low-density tail of the thermal cloud. Above the
superfluid transition, our expression for the damping in trapped inhomogeneous
gases is analogous to the result first obtained by Landau and Lifshitz for
uniform classical fluids. We also use the moment method to discuss the
crossover from the collisionless to the hydrodynamic region. Recent data for
the monopole-quadrupole mode in the hydrodynamic region of a trapped gas of
metastable He is discussed. We also present calculations for the damping of
the analogous monopole-quadrupole condensate mode in the superfluid
phase.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Theory of coherent Bragg spectroscopy of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate
We present a detailed theoretical analysis of Bragg spectroscopy from a
Bose-Einstein condensate at T=0K. We demonstrate that within the linear
response regime, both a quantum field theory treatment and a meanfield
Gross-Pitaevskii treatment lead to the same value for the mean evolution of the
quasiparticle operators. The observable for Bragg spectroscopy experiments,
which is the spectral response function of the momentum transferred to the
condensate, can therefore be calculated in a meanfield formalism. We analyse
the behaviour of this observable by carrying out numerical simulations in
axially symmetric three-dimensional cases and in two dimensions. An approximate
analytic expression for the observable is obtained and provides a means for
identifying the relative importance of three broadening and shift mechanisms
(meanfield, Doppler, and finite pulse duration) in different regimes. We show
that the suppression of scattering at small values of q observed by
Stamper-Kurn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2876 (1999)] is accounted for by the
meanfield treatment, and can be interpreted in terms of the interference of the
u and v quasiparticle amplitudes. We also show that, contrary to the
assumptions of previous analyses, there is no regime for trapped condensates
for which the spectral response function and the dynamic structure factor are
equivalent. Our numerical calculations can also be performed outside the linear
response regime, and show that at large laser intensities a significant
decrease in the shift of the spectral response function can occur due to
depletion of the initial condensate.Comment: RevTeX4 format, 16 pages plus 7 eps figures; Update to published

Test Particle in a Quantum Gas
A master equation with a Lindblad structure is derived, which describes the
interaction of a test particle with a macroscopic system and is expressed in
terms of the operator valued dynamic structure factor of the system. In the
case of a free Fermi or Bose gas the result is evaluated in the Brownian limit,
thus obtaining a single generator master equation for the description of
quantum Brownian motion in which the correction due to quantum statistics is
explicitly calculated. The friction coefficients for Boltzmann and Bose or
Fermi statistics are compared.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, no figure
Generation of arbitrary two dimensional motional state of a trapped ion
We present a scheme to generate an arbitrary two-dimensional quantum state of
motion of a trapped ion. This proposal is based on a sequence of laser pulses,
which are tuned appropriately to control transitions on the sidebands of two
modes of vibration. Not more than laser pulses are needed to
generate a pure state with upper phonon number and in the and
direction respectively.Comment: to appear in PR
Growing Environmental Activists: Developing Environmental Agency and Engagement Through Childrenâs Fiction.
We explore how story has the potential to encourage environmental engagement and a sense of agency provided that critical discussion takes place. We illuminate this with reference to the philosophies of John Macmurray on personal agency and social relations; of John Dewey on the primacy of experience for philosophy; and of Paul Ricoeur on hermeneutics, dialogue, dialectics and narrative. We view the use of fiction for environmental understanding as hermeneutic, a form of conceptualising place which interprets experience and perception. The four writers for young people discussed are Ernest Thompson Seton, Kenneth Grahame, Michelle Paver and Philip Pullman. We develop the concept of critical dialogue, and link this to Crick's demand for active democratic citizenship. We illustrate the educational potential for environmental discussions based on literature leading to deeper understanding of place and environment, encouraging the belief in young people that they can be and become agents for change. We develop from Zimbardo the key concept of heroic resister to encourage young people to overcome peer pressure. We conclude with a call to develop a greater awareness of the potential of fiction for learning, and for writers to produce more focused stories engaging with environmental responsibility and activism
Generalized coherent state representation of Bose-Einstein condensates
We show that the quantum many-body state of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC)
consistent with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations is
a generalized coherent state (GCS). At zero temerature, the non-condensate
density and the anomalous non-condensate correlation are not independent,
allowing us to elimiate one of the three variables in the TDHFB.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. A. No figures. Revised version fixes several
minor typos, and adds to some discussions; no change to the conclusio
