Speculations and inquiries regarding the possibilities for and limitations to practical interstellar travel

The existence of superluminal phenomena have now been independently confirmed by physicists working in several different laboratories, most notably by the team of Alain Aspect in Paris. The two major variants of these experiments are described and their implications for superluminal communication and superluminal travel are discussed. It is noted that while the original suggestion for these experiments is due in part to Albert Einstein (Einstein, Rosen, and Podolsky, 1935), their recent empirical validation presents a significant anomaly within the theoretical framework of the special theory of quantum mechanics. How a newly emerging paradigm broadly encompassing the empirical sciences, and informed by both the social sciences and general systems theory may resolve this theoretical crisis is discussed. With the impasse to further elaboration of these effects for possible superluminal applications removed, the discussion concludes with a research proposal

Unionism in the Field of Banking

In the forty-five years since the first labor bank was chartered, unions have enjoyed little success in organizing bank employees. Unions now face declining membership unless white-collar workers can be convinced of the value of unionism, so bank workers, as one of the rapidly growing elements of the white-collar population, are being closely scrutinized as potential union candidates. The unique aspects of the banking industry have in the past dissipated drives of any 1113.gnitude directed at individual segments of the industry, while rendering any organizational campaign across the entire banking front unfeasible. The close relationship between worker and management, the small business atmosphere of a typical bank relative to its number of employees, and the unparalleled educational· systems which bankers have established for the banking population have aligned workers with management. Future attempts to attract the bank employee are forecast by labor leaders, labor relations counselors, and labor columnists; and the Office and Professional Employees International Union has developed tactics to appeal to bank employees. The success of these measures will be determined in the light of subsequent events, but the extent of union efforts in the banking field will depend upon bank management\u27s ability to meet and react to the challenge

Investigations into the synthesis of upper-rim functionalised calix[4]arenes and their applications

In this thesis, the development of three efficient protocols for the generation of upper-rim ABBB, ABAC and ABCD functionalised calix[4]arenes, in addition to a number of novel AAAAAB functionalised calix[6]arenes is described. For the generation of the ABAC type systems, an ionic hydrogenation between the known 1,3-diformyl calix[4]arene and para-iodophenyl urea under optimised reaction conditions to favour desymmetrisation though mono-substitution. To generate ABBB type systems, a protocol previously established within the Bew group that exploits the mono-selective Mannich reaction of calix[4]arene, aqueous dimethylamine and formalin is developed. Whilst for the ABCD type systems, previous studies in the Bew group are built upon to show how a mechanochemical, intramolecular, Cannizzaro reaction can function as a highly efficient means of desymmetrising the upper-rim of 1,3-diformyl functionalised calix[4]arenes. It is subsequently demonstrated how this ‘suite’ of protocols can be applied to the construction of fluorogenic sensors (Chapter 2), redox-active and 1,2,3-triazole linked cavitands (Chapter 3) and non-linear optical materials (Chapter 4); advanced materials which would have been difficult to access efficiently using other means

The relative performance obtained with several methods of control of an overcompressed engine using gasoline

This report presents some results obtained during an investigation to determine the relative characteristics for several methods of control of an overcompressed engine using gasoline and operating under sea-level conditions. For this work, a special single cylinder test engine, 5-inch bore by 7-inch stroke, and designed for ready adjustment of compression ratio, valve timing and valve lift while running, was used. This engine has been fully described in NACA-TR-250. Tests were made at an engine speed of 1,400 R. P. M. for compression ratios ranging from 4.0 to 7.6. The air-fuel ratios were on the rich side of the chemically correct mixture and were approximately those giving maximum power. When using plain domestic gasoline, detonation was controlled to a constant, predetermined amount (audible), such as would be permissible for continuous operation, by (a) throttling the carburetor, (b) maintaining full throttle but greatly retarding the ignition, and (c) varying the timing of the inlet valve to reduce the effective compression ratio. From the results of the tests, it may be concluded that method (b) gives the best all-round performance and, being easily employed in service, appears to be the most practicable method for controlling an overcompressed engine using gasoline at low altitudes
