    Brachyuran crustaceans from the bycatch of prawn fisheries at the mouth of the Amazon river.

    The present paper is a pioneering study on the Brachyura bycatch associated with the artisan prawn fisheries at the mouth of the Amazon River. The study was conducted at four collection sites distributed along the mouth of the Amazon River between the months of January/2009 and January/2010. The animals were caught using handcrafted traps called ?matapi?, which are used by prawn fisherman in the region. Twenty matapis were used at each collection site. A total of 145 specimens were captured and six species were identified, all belonging to the Trichodactylidae family - Sylviocarcinus maldonadoensis, S. pictus, S. devillei, Valdivia serrata, Dilocarcinus septemdentatus and D. pagei. The most representative species, S. maldonadoensis, S. pictus and S. devillei were classified as regular. Regarding the composition of the capture, there were three specimens of D. pagei , only one male specimen of D. septemdentatus, forty-eight specimens of S. maldonadoensis, sixty-eight specimens of S. pictus, twenty-two specimens of S. devillei and three specimens of V. serrata. In all months, the brachyuran fauna showed a considerably lower biomass when compared to the prawns, representing only 5% of the catch, in a ratio of 1:0.06. For most species, the number of males was always higher than the number of females in almost all collection months

    Knowledge translation in the healthcare sector. a structured literature review

    Knowledge translation can be understood as the ability to translate concepts between different contexts by stakeholders who have different skills, aims, and even feelings in their relation to such concepts. Knowledge translation tools allow for the effective transfer of existing knowledge as well as the emergence of new knowledge of value to some or all of the stakeholders involved in the process. Knowledge translation is particularly challenging in healthcare and medicine, where different practitioners (e.g. physicians, biologists, engineers, researchers) and professionals need methodologies and tools to communicate and share knowledge among them and with patients in an effective manner. To better understand this phenomenon, we conducted a Structured Literature Review (SLR). The concepts knowledge, translation and either healthcare or medicine were used as search terms in the title, abstract or keywords on Scopus, which highlighted more than 2,000 contributions in the medical literature and only 22 in Business and Management. Our review of these documents revealed a need in the healthcare sector for better managerial and organisational practices to cope with the various challenges related to the sharing of knowledge among stakeholders. At the same time, the business and management communities appear to have made significant progress in addressing the same issues. We therefore decided to concentrate our analysis on the works published by the business and management community as a mean to highlight future research directions for the healthcare management sector. Thus, our research identifies areas of relevance which are currently underdeveloped, provides insights on both theoretical and empirical developments and offers a critique of the approaches, research frameworks and methods used, as well as emerging trends in these domains. Despite a lack of an agreed definition of the term Knowledge Translation, our findings highlight a growing interest in the topic, with most of the contributions published after 2015. Scholars have approached the term from a variety of perspectives depending on the nature of the stakeholders of relevance to their studies. Whilst there does not seem to be a predominant framework, the literature reveals several tools and techniques that are effective in enhancing Knowledge Translation in different contexts. New research opportunities in this domain emerge in terms of underinvestigated areas within the healthcare sector

    Pathways to folding, nucleation events and native geometry

    We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice model and the Go potential to investigate the existence of folding pathways at the level of contact cluster formation for two native structures with markedly different geometries. Our analysis of folding pathways revealed a common underlying folding mechanism, based on nucleation phenomena, for both protein models. However, folding to the more complex geometry (i.e. that with more non-local contacts) is driven by a folding nucleus whose geometric traits more closely resemble those of the native fold.     Reproductive aspects of Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in the State of Amapá, Amazon River mouth.

    Macrobrachium amazonicum is an indigenous prawn vastly distributed in basins of South America, widely exploited by artisanal fisheries in northern and northeastern Brazil and, with great potential for aquaculture. This study aimed to investigate general aspects of population structure and reproductive characteristics (size at first maturity, fecundity and reproductive output) of M. amazonicum from two important areas to artisanal prawn fishing located at the mouth of the Amazon River, State of Amapá. The specimens were captured using 20 handcrafted traps called ?matapi?. A number of 5,179 prawns were captured, 2,975 females and 2,195 males resulting in 1.35:1 female to male ratio. Santana Island and Mazagão Velho showed females predominated in the population. A reproductive peak period was observed from January to April/2009 and in December/2010, coinciding with the period of higher rainfall. The recruitment peak occurred in June and July/2009. Egg-bearing females ranged in size (carapace length) from 11.10 to 29.6 mm. Fecundity increased with female size and reached up to 7,417 eggs. This amount of eggs is considered low if compared with other Macrobrachium estuarine species. Mean egg volume increased gradually from 0.121 to 0.24 mm3 during embryogenesis, representing 68.5% of overall increase from Stage I to Stage III. Eggs of M. amazonicum are small; this is typical for Macrobrachium species, which depends on brackish water to complete the larval development. Irrespective of female size, reproductive output of M. amazonicum varied between 4.8 and 21.85% of their body weight into eggs production

    Resumo: O valor estimado para o agronegócio brasileiro no ano de 2013 do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) é de R$1,03 trilhão, que corresponde a 21,3% do PIB nacional. Além de gerar riquezas, o agronegócio é responsável também pela garantia da segurança alimentar da população brasileira. Com a consolidação deste setor, novos desafios têm sido lançados, como a busca da sustentabilidade. Várias ferramentas podem ser adotadas para estudos de desempenho ambiental de produtos, como a Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida (ACV). Sua aplicação a produtos agrícolas é recente, particularmente no Brasil, e exige adequações metodológicas para melhor representar as características da agricultura nacional. São poucos os estudos de ACV dedicados à cultura do girassol e seus derivados. Neste trabalho é apresentada uma abrangente revisão bibliográfica sobre ACV de girassol e seus produtos. Também é caracterizado o sistema de produção da principal região produtora brasileira (a microrregião de Parecis, MT, que concentra 87% da produção nacional de girassol). Para tanto, foi gerado um sistema de produção modal e o seu respectivo inventário. Por fim, é apresentado o desempenho ambiental da produção de grãos e óleo de girassol na região em estudo

    A mixed model to multiple harvest-location trials applied to genomic prediction in Coffea canephora.

    Genomic selection (GS) has been studied in several crops to increase the rates of genetic gain and reduce the length of breeding cycles. Despite its relevance, there are only a modest number of reports applied to the genus Coffea. Effective implementation depends on the ability to consider genomic models, which correctly represent breeding scenario in which the species are inserted. Coffee experimentation, in general, is represented by evaluations in multiple locations and harvests to understand the interaction and predict the performance of untested genotypes. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate GS models suitable for use in Coffea canephora. An expansion of traditional GBLUP was considered and genomic analysis was performed using a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach, showed good potential to be used in coffee breeding programs. Interactions were modeled using the multiplicative mixed model theory, which is commonly used in multi-environment trials (MET) analysis in perennial crops. The effectiveness of the method used was compared with other genetic models in terms of goodness-of-fit statistics and prediction accuracy. Different scenarios that mimic coffee breeding were used in the cross-validation process. The method used had the lowest AIC and BIC values and, consequently, the best fit. In terms of predictive ability, the incorporation of the MET modeling showed higher accuracy (on average 10–17% higher) and lower prediction errors than traditional GBLUP. The results may be used as basis for additional studies into the genus Coffea and can be expanded for similar perennial crops
