Effects of macrosegregation and microstructure on the corrosion resistance and hardness of a directionally solidified Zn-5.0wt.%Mg alloy
This study aims to analyze the influence of macrosegregation on microstructure evolution, and of microstructure length scale on the corrosion resistance of a Zn-5.0wt.%Mg alloy casting. The analyzed samples were taken along the length of castings unidirectionally solidified in unsteady state conditions of heat extraction. Microstructure characterization, microhardness, linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests were performed. A unique type of microstructure was observed, characterized essentially by a morphology typified by idiomorphic MgZn2 crystals in a βcomplex eutectic mixtureβ [coexistence of stable (Zn+Mg2Zn11) and metastable (Zn+MgZn2) eutectics]. The correlation between thermal and microstructural parameters, permitted experimental growth laws, correlating the evolution of the lamellar eutectic spacing with the cooling rate to be established. Vickers microhardness and electrochemical corrosion tests showed that more refined microstructures associated with higher experimental cooling rates, are related to a better set of higher hardness and corrosion resistance221CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTΓFICO E TECNOLΓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAΓΓO DE APERFEIΓOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NΓVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAΓΓO DE AMPARO Γ PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SΓO PAULO - FAPESP155863/2013-4; Project i-link0944; 166912/2017-4nΓ£o tem2012/08494-0; 2013/15478-3; 2013/25452-1; 2013/23396-7; 2014/50502-
Anomalous diffusion on crumpled wires in two dimensions
It is investigated the statistical properties of random walks evolving on
real configurations of a crumpled wire rigidly jammed in two dimensions. These
crumpled hierarchical structures with complex topology are obtained from a
metallic wire injected at a constant rate into a transparent planar cell of
20cm of diameter. The observed diffusion is anomalous with an exponent very
close to that obtained at the threshold of two dimensional percolation. A
comparison of the system studied in this paper with other systems of physical
interest is also made, and an experimental consequence of our results is
discussed.Comment: 10 pages including 4 figures. Physica A (2006). Preprin
Stability and Decay Rates of Non-Isotropic Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates
Non-Isotropic Attractive Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated with
Newton and inverse Arnoldi methods. The stationary solutions of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation and their linear stability are computed. Bifurcation
diagrams are calculated and used to find the condensate decay rates
corresponding to macroscopic quantum tunneling, two-three body inelastic
collisions and thermally induced collapse.
Isotropic and non-isotropic condensates are compared. The effect of
anisotropy on the bifurcation diagram and the decay rates is discussed.
Spontaneous isotropization of the condensates is found to occur. The influence
of isotropization on the decay rates is characterized near the critical point.Comment: revtex4, 11 figures, 2 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Stability of Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Periodic Potential
Using a standing light wave trap, a stable quasi-one-dimensional attractive
dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate can be realized. In a mean-field
approximation, this phenomenon is modeled by the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger
equation with attractive nonlinearity and an elliptic function potential of
which a standing light wave is a special case. New families of stationary
solutions are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the
linear Schr\"odinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schr\"odinger
equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods.
Trivial-phase solutions are experimentally stable provided they have nodes and
their density is localized in the troughs of the potential. Stable
time-periodic solutions are also examined.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figure
On random flights with non-uniformly distributed directions
This paper deals with a new class of random flights defined in the real space characterized
by non-uniform probability distributions on the multidimensional sphere. These
random motions differ from similar models appeared in literature which take
directions according to the uniform law. The family of angular probability
distributions introduced in this paper depends on a parameter which
gives the level of drift of the motion. Furthermore, we assume that the number
of changes of direction performed by the random flight is fixed. The time
lengths between two consecutive changes of orientation have joint probability
distribution given by a Dirichlet density function.
The analysis of is not an easy task, because it
involves the calculation of integrals which are not always solvable. Therefore,
we analyze the random flight obtained as
projection onto the lower spaces of the original random
motion in . Then we get the probability distribution of
Although, in its general framework, the analysis of is very complicated, for some values of , we can provide
some results on the process. Indeed, for , we obtain the characteristic
function of the random flight moving in . Furthermore, by
inverting the characteristic function, we are able to give the analytic form
(up to some constants) of the probability distribution of Comment: 28 pages, 3 figure
Vortex phase diagram in trapped Bose-Einstein condensation
The vortex phase diagram in the external rotation frequency versus
temperature is calculated for dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gases. It is
determined within the Bogoliubov-Popov theory for a finite temperature where
the condensate and non-condensate fractions are treated in an equal footing.
The temperature dependences of various thermodynamic instability lines for the
vortex nucleation are computed to construct the phase diagram. Experiments are
proposed to resolve a recent controversy on the vortex creation problem
associated with the quantized vortex observation in Rb atom gases.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Collective excitations of a two-dimensional interacting Bose gas in anti-trap and linear external potentials
We present a method of finding approximate analytical solutions for the
spectra and eigenvectors of collective modes in a two-dimensional system of
interacting bosons subjected to a linear external potential or the potential of
a special form , where is the chemical
potential. The eigenvalue problem is solved analytically for an artificial
model allowing the unbounded density of the particles. The spectra of
collective modes are calculated numerically for the stripe, the rare density
valley and the edge geometry and compared with the analytical results. It is
shown that the energies of the modes localized at the rare density region and
at the edge are well approximated by the analytical expressions. We discuss
Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the systems under investigations at and find that in case of a finite number of the particles the regime of BEC
can be realized, whereas the condensate disappears in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures include
