    Associations between Bottle-feeding Intensity and Maternal Encouragement of Bottle-emptying

    Objective: To explore longitudinal associations between bottle-feeding and maternal encouragement of infant bottle-emptying during the first 6 months of infancy. Design: Mothers completed questionnaires during the third trimester of pregnancy, then monthly during the first 6 months postpartum. Questionnaires assessed family demographics, maternal and infant weight status, infant feeding patterns and maternal encouragement of infant bottle-emptying. Setting: The Infant Feeding Practices Study 2, conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. Subjects: Mothers (n 1776). Results: Repeated-measures regression was used to explore associations between bottle-feeding intensity (BFI; defined as the percentage of daily feedings that were from a bottle) and encouragement of bottle-emptying. Mothers who reported consistently high or consistently low BFI also exhibited consistently higher or lower frequency of encouraging their infants to empty the bottle (respectively) across the first 6 months of infancy, whereas mothers who reported increases in their BFI also exhibited concomitant increases in the frequency to which they encouraged their infants to finish the bottle. More frequent encouragement of bottle-emptying was also associated with feeding expressed breast milk (P\u3c0·001), and lower parity (P=0·01), pre-pregnancy BMI (P=0·002) and infant birth weight (P=0·001). Conclusions: More frequent use of bottles for infant feeding was significantly associated with more frequent encouragement of bottle-emptying. Further research using causal designs is needed to better understand whether the use of bottles promotes this controlling feeding practice or whether mothers with more controlling feeding practices opt to bottle-feed

    Scavenging vs hunting affects behavioral traits of an opportunistic carnivore

    Background. Human-induced changes to ecosystems transform the availability of resources to predators, including altering prey populations and increasing access to anthropogenic foods. Opportunistic predators are likely to respond to altered food resources by changing the proportion of food they hunt versus scavenge. These shifts in foraging behavior will affect species interactions through multiple pathways, including by changing other aspects of predator behavior such as boldness, innovation, and social structure. Methods. To understand how foraging behavior impacts predator behavior, we conducted a controlled experiment to simulate hunting by introducing a prey model to captive coyotes (Canis latrans) and compared their behavior to coyotes that continued to scavenge over one year. We used focal observations to construct behavioral budgets, and conducted novel object, puzzle box, and conspecific tests to evaluate boldness, innovation, and response to conspecifics. Results. We documented increased time spent resting by hunting coyotes paired with decreased time spent active. Hunting coyotes increased boldness and persistence but there were no changes in innovation. Our results illustrate how foraging behavior can impact other aspects of behavior, with potential ecological consequences to predator ecology, predator-prey dynamics, and human-wildlife conflict; however, the captive nature of our study limits specific conclusions related to wild predators. We conclude that human-induced behavioral changes could have cascading ecological implications that are not fully understood

    Effects of early‑life experience on innovation and problem‑solving in captive coyotes

    Early-life experience often shapes behaviors like innovation and exploration. These behaviors are important to animals encountering novel food resources in diverse habitats, such as mesocarnivores in urban areas. To understand if early-life experiences impact later-life behavior, we examined how coyotes (Canis latrans) responded to a multi-access puzzle box at two life stages: pup (~ 7 weeks) and dispersal (~ 10 months). We first exposed pups, still living with their parents and littermates, to a baited puzzle box. At dispersal age, we again tested both these pups and an age-matched control group that was not exposed to the puzzle box as pups, both as individuals and with their pair-mate. We quantified problem-solving capability, latency to approach, and time spent in proximity to the puzzle box. Most pup litters solved two of the three access points, but no dispersal-age coyotes solved any access point. The amount of time dispersal-age coyotes spent near the box during pair-testing increased with (1) more time spent near the box during single-testing, (2) more time their pair-mate spent near the box during pair-testing, and (3) if their pair-mate came from a litter that previously solved the box. These results suggest that early-life experience and social interactions influence exploratory behavior at dispersal age, but coyotes exhibit increased avoidance behavior at this life stage, which corresponds with the life stage that overall survivorship decreases. Our study provides insight into how early-life experiences shape adult behavior in mesocarnivores

    Interbacterial signaling via Burkholderia contact-dependent growth inhibition system proteins

    How bacteria interact with one another has implications for human health and disease because complex bacterial communities like biofilms can impact agriculture, infection transmission, and disease progression. Contact-dependent growth inhibition systems are proteins produced by many bacteria that deliver toxins to neighboring bacteria, allowing the producing cell to inhibit competitors that do not make the correct antidote. Here, we show that these systems not only antagonize competitors but also mediate communication and cooperation between bacteria that produce identical toxin/antidote pairs. Antidote-containing bacteria that are targeted by toxins change their gene expression to promote biofilm formation. Leading to a more complete understanding of how these antibacterial protein systems function, this study will inform future development of therapeutics, vaccines, and decontaminants

    A comparison of mean winds and gravity wave activity in the northern and southern polar MLT

    Mean winds and waves observed in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere with MF radars located at Davis (69°S, 78°E) and Poker Flat (65°N, 147°W) are compared. Measurements covering the period from 1999 to mid 2000 show differences in the strength of the horizontal wind fields. In the southern hemisphere the zonal and meridional winds reach their maximum values near the summer solstice, but are delayed by 2–3 weeks in the northern hemisphere. Management can be challenging, and clinicians often guide their decision-making based on the ever-changing protocols that are tailored mostly to the elderly population. Even more underrepresented in COVID-19 research are patients with chromosomal abnormalities and trisomy syndromes, as they appear less frequently, but have risk of increased morbidity and mortality due to underlying medical conditions. We describe a case of severe COVID-19 infection in a young patient with mosaic trisomy 13 and pre-existing polycystic kidney disease, who developed severe acute hypoxic respiratory failure and acute chronic kidney injury. The patient was provided maximal pharmacological support and her clinical course helps to shape the understanding of COVID-19 infections in the setting of chromosomal abnormalities and complex medical history

    Novel Bayesian Networks for Genomic Prediction of Developmental Traits in Biomass Sorghum.

    The ability to connect genetic information between traits over time allow Bayesian networks to offer a powerful probabilistic framework to construct genomic prediction models. In this study, we phenotyped a diversity panel of 869 biomass sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) lines, which had been genotyped with 100,435 SNP markers, for plant height (PH) with biweekly measurements from 30 to 120 days after planting (DAP) and for end-of-season dry biomass yield (DBY) in four environments. We evaluated five genomic prediction models: Bayesian network (BN), Pleiotropic Bayesian network (PBN), Dynamic Bayesian network (DBN), multi-trait GBLUP (MTr-GBLUP), and multi-time GBLUP (MTi-GBLUP) models. In fivefold cross-validation, prediction accuracies ranged from 0.46 (PBN) to 0.49 (MTr-GBLUP) for DBY and from 0.47 (DBN, DAP120) to 0.75 (MTi-GBLUP, DAP60) for PH. Forward-chaining cross-validation further improved prediction accuracies of the DBN, MTi-GBLUP and MTr-GBLUP models for PH (training slice: 30-45 DAP) by 36.4-52.4% relative to the BN and PBN models. Coincidence indices (target: biomass, secondary: PH) and a coincidence index based on lines (PH time series) showed that the ranking of lines by PH changed minimally after 45 DAP. These results suggest a two-level indirect selection method for PH at harvest (first-level target trait) and DBY (second-level target trait) could be conducted earlier in the season based on ranking of lines by PH at 45 DAP (secondary trait). With the advance of high-throughput phenotyping technologies, our proposed two-level indirect selection framework could be valuable for enhancing genetic gain per unit of time when selecting on developmental traits

    RJK Observations of the Optical Afterglow of GRB 991216

    We present near-infrared and optical observations of the afterglow to the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 991216 obtained with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2-m telescope and the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope. The observations range from 15 hours to 3.8 days after the burst. The temporal behavior of the data is well described by a single power-law decay with index -1.36 +/-0.04, independent of wavelength. The optical spectral energy distribution, corrected for significant Galactic reddening of E(B-V)=0.626, is well fitted by a single power-law with index -0.58 +/- 0.08. Combining the IR/optical observations with a Chandra X-ray measurement gives a spectral index of -0.8 +/- 0.1 in the synchrotron cooling regime. A comparison between the spectral and temporal power-law indices suggest that a jet is a better match to the observations than a simple spherical shock.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal, 12 pages, 4 postscript figure

    Testing the acoustic adaptation hypothesis with vocalizations from three mongoose species

    Acoustic signals degrade and attenuate as they propagate through the environment, thus transmitting information with lower efficiency. The acoustic adaptation hypothesis (AAH) states that selection should shape the vocalizations of a species to maximize transmission through their habitat. A specific prediction of the AAH is that vocalizations will transmit better when emitted in their native habitat versus non-native habitats. We tested this prediction using vocalizations of three mongoose species that dwell in structurally different habitats: banded mongooses, Mungos mungo, dwarf mongooses, Helogale parvula, and meerkats, Suricata suricatta. Representative vocalizations of the three species were broadcast and rerecorded in each habitat at six distances from the source. Rerecorded vocalizations were compared to nondegraded calls through spectrogram correlation. Using generalized linear mixed models, we then quantified the differences in transmission fidelity of each species' vocalizations. Overall, we found partial support for the AAH within the mongoose family: habitat type strongly affected sound transmission, but depending on the species, vocalizations did not always transmit best in their native habitat, suggesting various degrees of acoustic adaptation. Vegetation cover within habitat type was also found to have a significant influence on the transmission properties of vocalizations. In addition, we found evidence that by changing their behaviour, either by producing vocalizations at different amplitudes or by choosing a specific calling location, mongooses can reduce sound degradation and attenuation over distance, thereby enhancing their communication efficiency. Our work highlights how habitat features may be key determinants of vocalization structure in mongooses, and is generalizable to other species living in similar conditions. It also suggests that, given a species and habitat, other selective pressures might prevail and limit acoustic adaptation in animal communication systems. Finally, our study provides insights into how mammals can adjust their vocal behaviour to compensate for environmental constraints on the transmission of their vocalizations

    Mental and Social Health Impacts the Use of Protective Behavioral Strategies in Reducing Risky Drinking and Alcohol Consequences

    The present study is the first to examine the moderating effects of mental and social health status in the relationship between protective behavioral strategies utilized to reduce high risk drinking (e.g., alternating alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks or avoiding drinking games) and alcohol outcomes (drinking variables and alcohol-related negative consequences) among first-year college females (N = 128). Findings revealed that protective behaviors were particularly effective in reducing both alcohol consumption and related risks among participants reporting lower mental health as compared to higher mental health. Further, participants with higher social health who utilized protective behaviors consumed significantly fewer maximum drinks per occasion than did peers who also employed protective behaviors but reported lower social health. Explanation of findings and implications for campus intervention initiatives are discussed
