La película Sangre de Mayo, de José Luis Garci, y la obra teatral Puerta del Sol: un Episodio Nacional, de Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente, son la adaptación de las novelas de Benito Pérez Galdós, Trafalgar, La corte de Carlos IV y El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo. Estos trabajos cinematográficos y teatrales muestran como se traduce el lenguaje narrativo al fílmico. La adaptación de Garci y Pérez de la Fuente es una nueva forma de conocer los procesos para traspasar una idea literaria al guión cinematográfico.The film Sangre de Mayo, by José Luis Garci and the play Puerta del Sol: un Episodio Nacional, by Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente, are adaptations of the novels of Benito Pérez Galdós (Trafalgar, La corte de Carlos IV, El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo). The impact of the Kasatochi eruption on the Moon's illumination during the August 2008 lunar eclipse

The Moon's changeable aspect during a lunar eclipse is largely attributable to variations in the refracted unscattered sunlight absorbed by the terrestrial atmosphere that occur as the satellite crosses the Earth's shadow. The contribution to the Moon's aspect from sunlight scattered at the Earth's terminator is generally deemed minor. However, our analysis of a published spectrum of the 16 August 2008 lunar eclipse shows that diffuse sunlight is a major component of the measured spectrum at wavelengths shorter than 600 nm. The conclusion is supported by two distinct features, namely the spectrum's tail at short wavelengths and the unequal absorption by an oxygen collisional complex at two nearby bands. Our findings are consistent with the presence of the volcanic cloud reported at high northern latitudes following the 7-8 August 2008 eruption in Alaska of the Kasatochi volcano. The cloud both attenuates the unscattered sunlight and enhances moderately the scattered component, thus modifying the contrast between the two contributions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letter

Matrix models for classical groups and Toeplitz±\pm Hankel minors with applications to Chern-Simons theory and fermionic models

We study matrix integration over the classical Lie groups $U(N),Sp(2N),O(2N)$ and $O(2N+1)$, using symmetric function theory and the equivalent formulation in terms of determinants and minors of Toeplitz$\pm$Hankel matrices. We establish a number of factorizations and expansions for such integrals, also with insertions of irreducible characters. As a specific example, we compute both at finite and large $N$ the partition functions, Wilson loops and Hopf links of Chern-Simons theory on $S^{3}$ with the aforementioned symmetry groups. The identities found for the general models translate in this context to relations between observables of the theory. Finally, we use character expansions to evaluate averages in random matrix ensembles of Chern-Simons type, describing the spectra of solvable fermionic models with matrix degrees of freedom.Comment: 32 pages, v2: Several improvements, including a Conclusions and Outlook section, added. 36 page

Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs bundles

We compute the Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs bundles, using Morse theory. A key point is that certain critical submanifolds of the Morse function can be identified with moduli spaces of parabolic triples. These moduli spaces come in families depending on a real parameter and we study their variation with this parameter.Comment: 78 pages. Extended version.
