Geography of the Sephardic exile in "La lozana andaluza "
This paper deals with the autobiographical elements present in "The portrait of the Lusty Andalusian Woman" by the Spanish writer Francisco Delicado. Francisco Delicado became a converso and a priest during the time of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, however he followed the exiled Jews to Italy, lived with them in Rome and left Rome after the Sac of Rome in 1527 to find himself again with the Sephardim in Venice. Francisco Delicado sets his story in the places where there were Spanish Jews and left an encrypted self portrait in his creation of "La lozana andaluza".peerReviewe
Quality of Reporting and Adherence to ARRIVE Guidelines in Animal Studies for Chagas Disease Preclinical Drug Research: A Systematic Review
Publication of accurate and detailed descriptions of methods in research articles involving animals is essential for health scientists to accurately interpret published data, evaluate results and replicate findings. Inadequate reporting of key aspects of experimental design may reduce the impact of studies and could act as a barrier to translation of research findings. Reporting of animal use must be as comprehensive as possible in order to take advantage of every study and every animal used. Animal models are essential to understanding and assessing new chemotherapy candidates for Chagas disease pathology, a widespread parasitic disease with few treatment options currently available. A systematic review was carried out to compare ARRIVE guidelines recommendations with information provided in publications of preclinical studies for new anti-Trypanosoma cruzi compounds. A total of 83 publications were reviewed. Before ARRIVE guidelines, 69% of publications failed to report any macroenvironment information, compared to 57% after ARRIVE publication. Similar proportions were observed when evaluating reporting of microenvironmental information (56% vs. 61%). Also, before ARRIVE guidelines publication, only 13% of papers described animal gender, only 18% specified microbiological status and 13% reported randomized treatment assignment, among other essential information missing or incomplete. Unfortunately, publication of ARRIVE guidelines did not seem to enhance reporting quality, compared to papers appeared before ARRIVE publication. Our results suggest that there is a strong need for the scientific community to improve animal use description, animal models employed, transparent reporting and experiment design to facilitate its transfer and application to the affected human population. Full compliance with ARRIVE guidelines, or similar animal research reporting guidelines, would be an excellent start in this direction.Fil: Gulin, Julián Ernesto Nicolás. Food public markets as cultural capital: Girona province
The role of public market halls in European cities has been analysed from several perspectives: as specific places for feeding the city; as public services; as the first public places built specifically for women; as places to control health and taxes on food; as places where the urban-rural relationship can be articulated; as places to control citizens’ behaviour, or as places providing local trade within a structure. There are fewer studies exploring public food markets as cultural and social capital with a view to improving the local and new-endogenous economy, an economy which not only involves the environment, but also the sociality linked to the tradition of food production. Research on public markets in small provincial towns is scarce, particularly the role they play in maintaining the urban-rural relationship by providing a local food supply, and also in constructing the rural landscape. This case study concerns the province of Girona and its nine public markets halls. The aim of the study is to explore their role as a public service within the territory and the agricultural landscape, the communication system, the local gastronomic culture and economic culture, this apparently being more resilient and stable than the economy of scale
Does grade retention affect achievement? Some evidence from PISA
Grade retention practices are at the forefront of the educational debate. In this paper, we use PISA 2009 data for Spain to measure the effect of grade retention on students achievement. One important problem when analyzing this question is that school outcomes and the propensity to repeat a grade are likely to be determined simultaneously. We address this problem by estimating a Switching Regression Model. We
find that grade retention has a negative impact on educational outcomes, but we confi
rm the importance of endogenous selection, which makes observed differences between repeaters and non-repeaters appear 14.6% lower than they actually are. The effect on PISA scores of repeating is much smaller (-10% of non-repeaters average) than the counterfactual reduction that non-repeaters would suffer had they been retained as repeaters (-24% of their average). Furthermore, those who repeated a grade during primary education suffered more than those who repeated a grade of secondary school, although the effect of repeating at both times is, as expected, much larger.Grade retention, educational scores, PISA
Moral Cleansing and Moral Licenses: experimental evidence
Research on moral cleansing and moral self-licensing has introduced dynamic considerations in the theory of moral behavior. Past bad actions trigger negative feelings that make people more likely to engage in future moral behavior to offset them. Symmetrically, past good deeds favor a positive self-perception that creates licensing effects, leading people to engage in behavior that is less likely to be moral. In short, a deviation from a “normal state of being” is balanced with a subsequent action that compensates the prior behavior. We model the decision of an individual trying to reach the optimal level of moral self-worth over time and show that under certain conditions the optimal sequence of actions follows a regular pattern which combines good and bad actions. We conduct an economic experiment where subjects play a sequence of giving decisions (dictator games) to explore this phenomenon. We find that donation in the previous period affects present decisions and the sign is negative: participants’ behavior in every round is negatively correlated to what they did in the past. Hence donations over time seem to be the result of a regular pattern of self-regulation: moral licensing (being selfish after altruist) and cleansing (altruistic after selfish).

Gelatin films dendronized selectively on one side
To perform a material with potential biomedicals aplications, a novel gelatin films was prepared by cold-casting method using cerium (III) and genipin solution as crosslinking agents, and surface modified with dendritic molecules. The structure and properties of the synthesized gelatin films were investigated by ATR-FTIR, mechanicals tests, swelling behavior and water vapor permeability (WVP). The results showed that crosslinking could improve the mechanical properties and lower the hydrophilic property of the gelatin films; additionally, the system gelatin/cerium(III)/genipin film showed the best properties, so was prepared a one-surface modified film with weysocianate (commercial dendron) from this. The results showed that experimental methodology performed allows the one-surface modification, so was obtained a novel biomaterial as film form with good properties and dendritic structure in one face (hydrophobic and hydrophilic faces) that gives a multivalent structure useful in biomedicine development.Fil: García Schejtman, Sergio David. Las empresas de inserción en España: normativa y características
The current situation of the sector is the result of a long process. It began with the first business initiatives concerning social integration and the different regulations developed by regional governments in support of social enterprises. There have been continual demands in the sector for state-level regulations, with a Draft Bill to regulate work integration social enterprises that will probably be presented before the end of the year. This prospect paves the way for a new era in which different lines of work will be aimed at consolidating the sector, with demands for further measures in addition to the new Law to facilitate this consolidation.Work integration social enterprises, social exclusion, regional legislation, public aid, legislative framework, requirements.
Based on an observation on the current scene starring Latin America, in contrast to its past, the article tries to explain the significance reached by social imaginaries in the construction of cultural identity, and how these imaginary were violated by the intervention of foreign models.
