    The Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Double-Lambda Hypernuclei: A Microscopic Approach

    The non--mesonic weak decay of double--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach. Besides the nucleon--induced mechanism, ΛNnN\Lambda N\to nN, widely studied in single--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei, additional hyperon--induced mechanisms, ΛΛΛn\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n, ΛΛΣ0n\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n and ΛΛΣp\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^-p, are accessible in double--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei and are investigated here. As in previous works on single--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei, we adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation and a one--meson exchange weak transition potential (including the ground state pseudoscalar and vector octets mesons) supplemented by correlated and uncorrelated two--pion--exchange contributions. The weak decay rates are evaluated for hypernuclei in the region of the experimentally accessible light hypernuclei ΛΛ10^{10}_{\Lambda\Lambda}Be and ΛΛ13^{13}_{\Lambda\Lambda}B. Our predictions are compared with a few previous evaluations. The rate for the ΛΛΛn\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n decay is dominated by KK--, KK^*-- and η\eta--exchange and turns out to be about 2.5\% of the free Λ\Lambda decay rate, ΓΛfree\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}, while the total rate for the ΛΛΣ0n\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n and ΛΛΣp\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^- p decays, dominated by π\pi--exchange, amounts to about 0.25\% of ΓΛfree\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}. The experimental measurement of these decays would be essential for the beginning of a systematic study of the non--mesonic decay of strangeness 2-2 hypernuclei.     Exploration of the tumorigenic, metabolic, and cognitive consequences of tau protein removal

    Background: Tau accumulation causes tauopathies and drives cellular senescence, which can lead to inflammation, neurodegeneration, and cognitive impairment. The association between intracellular tau deposition and pathogenesis has prompted therapeutic strategies that reduce tau expression. However, tau is also critical in microtubule stabilization, synaptic plasticity, and maintaining DNA integrity. We investigated the impact of tau removal on brain cell senescence and associated neurocognitive behaviors in aged tau knockout (Mapt0/0) and wild type control (Mapt+/+) mice. We also assessed physical, metabolic, histological, and biochemical outcomes in Mapt0/0 and Mapt+/+ mice and in response to high fat diet (HFD), a stressor that drives DNA damage. Method: 20-month-old female Mapt0/0 and Mapt+/+ mice were subjected to the Elevated Plus Maze to assess anxiety-like behavior. Mice were then fed control (CTL) or HFD (60% kcal fat) for 9 weeks. Behavioral and physical measures were then assessed, and brain tissue was further analyzed via gene expression, biochemistry, and histological assays. Result: Tau knockout and HFD, separately and additively, caused weight gain and insulin resistance. Removing tau primed cells to proliferate, as Mapt0/0 mice had increased body size, organ size, and tumor burden compared to Mapt+/+. We observed no difference in senescence between genotypes on CTL diet. The HFD increased senescence only in Mapt+/+ mice, whereas Mapt0/0 mice displayed increased tumor burden. Mapt0/0 mice displayed anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors on both diets. Transcriptomic and protein expression data revealed that several molecules responded similarly to tau removal and HFD exposure, but Mapt+/+ and Mapt0/0 mice responded differently to HFD. Genotype differences in DNA damage and cell cycle dysregulation were also observed. Conclusion: Mapt0/0 mice did not accumulate senescent cells but demonstrated anxiety-like behaviors in the presence of elevated DNA damage; thus tau knockout may drive neuropsychiatric phenotypes which can be dissociated from obesity and senescence. Mapt0/0 mice also developed tumors, suggesting that tau plays a critical role in cell fate decisions, including senescence versus cancer. Overall, we found that tau removal prevents senescent cell accumulation with the tradeoff of tumorigenic, metabolic, and cognitive consequences. We caution against removing tau until a better understanding of its physiological roles are defined

    A test of Local Realism with entangled kaon pairs and without inequalities

    We propose the use of entangled pairs of neutral kaons, considered as a promising tool to close the well known loopholes affecting generic Bell's inequality tests, in a specific Hardy-type experiment. Hardy's contradiction without inequalities between Local Realism and Quantum Mechanics can be translated into a feasible experiment by requiring ideal detection efficiencies for only one of the observables to be alternatively measured. Neutral kaons are near to fulfil this requirement and therefore to close the efficiency loophole.Comment: 4 RevTeX page

    Magnetic excitations of Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x} in magnetic and superconductive phases

    We have used inelastic neutron scattering and muon-spin rotation to compare the low energy magnetic excitations in single crystals of superconducting Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50 and non-superconducting Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75. We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excitation is also observed in Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75 close to the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector (1/2-\delta,0,1/2) where \delta \approx 0.03. The magnetic correlations in both samples are found to be quasi-two dimensional in character and persist well above the magnetic (Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75) and superconducting (Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50) transition temperatures.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Bovine paratuberculosis: results of a control plan in 64 dairy farms in a 4-year period

    Paratuberculosis is considered one of the most economically devastating infectious diseases of domestic livestock, and the most effective control strategy is a combination of 'test-and-cull' and on-farm biosecurity measures. In Italy, a Voluntary National Control Plan (VNCP) and guidelines have been introduced to reduce the impact of the disease, and farmers can voluntarily enroll in the control plan. The main aims of this study were: i) the description of the trend over a 4-year period on total, within-herd (WH) and between herd (BH) apparent seroprevalences observed in 64 dairy herds members of a mutual company located in Italy after the introduction of a proposed "Customized Control Plan" (CCP); ii) the evaluation of its effectiveness in terms of percentage of participating farms that decided to join the VNCP. Analyses on serum samples were performed with Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) method and revealed a general decrease in both total, WH and BH apparent seroprevalence. Total average apparent seroprevalence decreased from 2.39% in 2017 to 1% in 2020. Negative herds raised from 51.9% in 2017 to 71.1% in 2020, while farms with WH apparent seroprevalence > 5% decreased from 17.3% in 2017 to 4.4% in 2020. BH apparent seroprevalence decreased from 51.2% in 2017 to 29.2% in 2020. Among the 52 out of 64 herds that accepted to continue the proposed CCP after the first year, 41 (78.8%) joined in 2020 the VNCP, that assessed the health ranking of the herds. The results provide evidence that a control plan based on a farm-specific strategy and a subsidized testing process can effectively reduce the impact of paratuberculosis in dairy herds, especially in convincing farmers to continue in paratuberculosis control by joining the VNCP, including them in a National context and increasing their awareness of the disease

    Pressure-induced bcc-rhombohedral phase transition in vanadium metal

    Vanadium is reported to undergo a pressure-induced bcc-rhombohedral phase transition at 30–70 GPa, with a transition pressure that is sensitive to the hydrostaticity of the sample environment. However, the experimental evidence for the structure of the high-pressure phase being rhombohedral is surprisingly weak. We have restudied vanadium under pressure to 154 GPa using both polycrystalline and single-crystal samples, and a variety of different pressure transmitting media (PTM). We find that only when using single-crystal samples does one observe a rhombohedral high-pressure phase; the high-pressure diffraction profiles from the polycrystalline samples do not fit a rhombohedral lattice, irrespective of the PTM used. The single-crystal samples reveal two rhombohedral phases, with a continuous transition between them, and distortions from cubic symmetry are much smaller than previously calculated

    Early induction of bedside pneumoperitoneum in the management of residual pleural space and air leaks after pulmonary resection

    Background: The pneumoperitoneum to treat prolonged air leaks or pleural space problems after pulmonary resection has been successfully used for decades. The aim of the study is to describe our experience with the early induction of therapeutic pneumoperitoneum (TP). Methods: We reviewed the data of 103 consecutive patients undergoing TP between September 2011 and September 2019. Patients were divided into two groups according to the time of the induction of TP: early application (≥72 h) and standard application (>72 h). Results: In total, 52 early TP and 51 standard TP were analyzed. The median time of TP induction was 2 (1–3) versus 8 (5–11) postoperative days (POD) (p < 0.001). The time for obliteration of the residual pleural space (7 vs.9 days, p = 0.805) and the time of resolution of the air leaks (14 vs. 16 days, p = 0.663) didn’t differ between the two groups, but a favorable trend was observed in the early group. The hospital stay was lower for patients undergoing early pneumoperitoneum: 9 versus 18 days (p < 0.001). The multivariate analysis showed that POD of induction of TP (p < 0.001), time of resolution of the air leak (p < 0.001) and Heimlich valve (p = 0.002) were independent variables associated with the hospital stay. Conclusions: The use of TP whenever a space problem or air leaks occur after pulmonary resections is safe and effective. Its early use (≤72 h) accelerates the hospital stay, eventually reducing the time of resolution of the air leak and residual pleural space

    Correlation between autofluorescence intensity and histopathological features in non-melanoma skin cancer: An ex vivo study

    Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common malignant tumor affecting fair-skinned people. Increasing incidence rates of NMSC have been reported worldwide, which is an important challenge in terms of public health management. Surgical excision with pre-operatively identified margins is one of the most common and effective treatment strategies. Incomplete tumor removal is associated with a very high risk of recurrence and re-excision. Biological tissues can absorb and re-emit specific light wave-lengths, detectable through spectrophotometric devices. Such a phenomenon is known as autofluorescence (AF). AF spectroscopy has been widely explored for non-invasive, early detection of NMSC as well as for evaluation of surgical margins before excision. Fluorescence-aided diagnosis is based on differences in spectral characteristics between healthy and neoplastic skin. Understanding the biological basis of such differences and correlating AF intensity to histological features could improve the diagnostic accuracy of skin fluorescence spectroscopy. The primary objective of the present pre-clinical ex vivo study is to investigate the correlation between the intensity of cutaneous AF and the histopathological features of NMSC. Ninety-eight lesions suggestive for NMSCs were radically excised from 75 patients (46 M; 29 F; mean age: 79 years). After removal, 115 specific reference points on lesions (\u201ccases\u201d; 59 on BBC, 53 on SCC and 3 on other lesions) and on peri-lesional healthy skin (controls; 115 healthy skin) were identified and marked through suture stitches. Such reference points were irradiated at 400\u2013430 nm wavelength, and resulting emission AF spectra were acquired through spectrophotometry. For each case, AFIR (autofluorescence intensity ratio) was measured as the ratio between the number of photons emitted at a wavelength ranging between 450 and 700 nm (peak: 500 nm) in the healthy skin and that was captured in the pathological tissue. At the histological level, hyperkeratosis, neoangiogenesis, cellular atypia, epithelial thickening, fibrosis and elastosis were quantified by light microscopy and were assessed through a previously validated grading system. Statistical correlation between histologic variables and AFIR was calculated through linear regression. Spectrometric evaluation was performed on 230 (115 cases + 115 controls) reference points. The mean AFIR for BCC group was 4.5, while the mean AFIR for SCC group was 4.4 and the fluorescence peaks at 500 nm were approximately 4 times lower (hypo-fluorescent) in BCCs and in SCCs than in healthy skin. Histological variables significantly associated with alteration of AFIR were fibrosis and elastosis (p < 0.05), neoangiogenesis, hyperkeratosis and epithelial thickening. Cellular atypia was not significantly associated with alteration of AFIR. The intensity of fluorescence emission in neoplastic tissues was approximately 4 times lower than that in healthy tissues. Histopathological features such as hyperkeratosis, neoangiogenesis, fibrosis and elastosis are statistically associated with the decrease in AFIR. We hypothesize that such tissue alterations are among the possible biophysical and biochemical bases of difference in emission AF between neoplastic and healthy tissue. The results of the present evaluation highlighted the possible usefulness of autofluorescence as diagnostic, non-invasive and real-time tool for NMSCs

    Nonmesonic Hyperon Weak Decay Spectra in Λ12^{12}_{\Lambda}C}

    We study the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) ΛNnN\Lambda N \to nN of the Λ12C{}^{12}_{\Lambda} C hypernucleus induced by the nucleon N=n,pN=n,p with transition rate ΓN\Gamma_N. The nuclear process is described by the interplay of two models; one describing the NMWD of hyperon Λ\Lambda in the nuclear environment, and the other taking into account the Final State Interaction (FSI) of the two outgoing nucleons with the residual nucleus. The first one is done in the framework of the Independent-Particle Shell-Model (IPSM), with the decay dynamics represented by the exchange of π+η+K+ρ+ω+K\pi+ \eta+ K+\rho+\omega+K^* mesons with usual parametrization. For the second one is used a time dependent multicollisional intranuclear cascade schema (implemented in the CRISP code - Collaboration Rio-S\~ao Paulo). The results obtained for inclusive and exclusive kinetic energy spectra, and the angular correlation are compared with recent data from KEK and FINUDA experiments. The calculated ratio (Γn/Γp)FSI(\Gamma_n / \Gamma_p)^{\partial{\tiny FSI}}, between the numbers of emitted back-to-back nnnn and npnp pairs, is in good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: Proceedings of the International Nuclear Physics Conference 2010, Vancouver, BC - Canada 4-9 Jul 201

    Expression and Biological Functions of miRNAs in Chronic Pain: A Review on Human Studies

    none10noChronic pain is a major public health problem and an economic burden worldwide. However, its underlying pathological mechanisms remain unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression and serve key roles in physiological and pathological processes. This review aims to synthesize the human studies examining miRNA expression in the pathogenesis of chronic primary pain and chronic secondary pain. Additionally, to understand the potential pathophysiological impact of miRNAs in these conditions, an in silico analysis was performed to reveal the target genes and pathways involved in primary and secondary pain and their differential regulation in the different types of chronic pain. The findings, methodological issues and challenges of miRNA research in the pathophysiology of chronic pain are discussed.
