Resonant waves in the gap between two advancing barges

    Get PDF
The gap resonance between two advancing rectangular barges in side-by-side arrangement is investigated using a 3-D Rankine source method. A modified Sommerfeld radiation condition accounting for Doppler shift is applied for the low forward speed problem when the scattered waves could propagate ahead of the barges. Numerical studies are conducted to investigate various factors which will influence the wave resonance in the narrow gap with particular attention paid on the forward speed effect and its coupling effects with gap width and draft. It is found that in the absence of forward speed, the trapped water surface oscillates like a flexible plate and the wave flow within the gap behaves like a standing wave. When the two barges are travelling ahead, the resonant wave patterns within the gap are reshaped. Additionally, the resonant frequencies shift to lower value and are compressed within a narrow range. Gap resonances are reduced by the augment of gap width. The effect of draft is shown to be associated with resonant modes. Draft effect becomes less pronounced at higher order resonant modes. Furthermore, both gap width and draft effects on gap resonance are found to be independent from forward speed

The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2006 Elsevier Ltd.In this Letter, the global exponential stability analysis problem is considered for a class of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with time delays and Markovian jumping parameters. The jumping parameters considered here are generated from a continuous-time discrete-state homogeneous Markov process, which are governed by a Markov process with discrete and finite state space. The purpose of the problem addressed is to derive some easy-to-test conditions such that the dynamics of the neural network is stochastically exponentially stable in the mean square, independent of the time delay. By employing a new Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to establish the desired sufficient conditions, and therefore the global exponential stability in the mean square for the delayed RNNs can be easily checked by utilizing the numerically efficient Matlab LMI toolbox, and no tuning of parameters is required. A numerical example is exploited to show the usefulness of the derived LMI-based stability conditions. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Nuffield Foundation of the UK under Grant NAL/00630/G, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

State estimation for jumping recurrent neural networks with discrete and distributed delays

This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link - Copyright 2009 Elsevier LtdThis paper is concerned with the state estimation problem for a class of Markovian neural networks with discrete and distributed time-delays. The neural networks have a finite number of modes, and the modes may jump from one to another according to a Markov chain. The main purpose is to estimate the neuron states, through available output measurements, such that for all admissible time-delays, the dynamics of the estimation error is globally asymptotically stable in the mean square. An effective linear matrix inequality approach is developed to solve the neuron state estimation problem. Both the existence conditions and the explicit characterization of the desired estimator are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that the traditional stability analysis issue for delayed neural networks with Markovian jumping parameters can be included as a special case of our main results. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the applicability of the proposed design method. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grants GR/S27658/01, an International Joint Project sponsored by the Royal Society of the UK, the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 60774073 and 60804028, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province of China under Grant BK2007075, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

Ultimate structural and fatigue damage loads of a spar-type floating wind turbine

This study addresses the ultimate structural and fatigue damage loads of a spar-type offshore floating wind turbine under joint excitations of wind and wave. Aero-hydro-servo-elastic coupled analysis is performed in time-domain to capture the dynamic responses of the floating wind turbine. Based on the mean up-crossing rate method, the short-term ultimate structural load is estimated. The cumulative fatigue damage load is computed with the S-N method. It is shown that the low-level ultimate load is mostly influenced by wind forces whereas the high-level ultimate load is more closely related to wave forces. The wave excitations dominate the fatigue damage at tower top and tower base, whereas the mooring line fatigue damage is more sensitive to the wind forces

GsAPK, an ABA-Activated and Calcium-Independent SnRK2-Type Kinase from G. soja, Mediates the Regulation of Plant Tolerance to Salinity and ABA Stress

Plant Snf1 (sucrose non-fermenting-1) related protein kinase (SnRK), a subfamily of serine/threonine kinases, has been implicated as a crucial upstream regulator of ABA and osmotic signaling as in many other signaling cascades. In this paper, we have isolated a novel plant specific ABA activated calcium independent protein kinase (GsAPK) from a highly salt tolerant plant, Glycine soja (50109), which is a member of the SnRK2 family. Subcellular localization studies using GFP fusion protein indicated that GsAPK is localized in the plasma membrane. We found that autophosphorylation and Myelin Basis Protein phosphorylation activity of GsAPK is only activated by ABA and the kinase activity also was observed when calcium was replaced by EGTA, suggesting its independence of calcium in enzyme activity. We also found that cold, salinity, drought, and ABA stress alter GsAPK gene transcripts and heterogonous overexpression of GsAPK in Arabidopsis alters plant tolerance to high salinity and ABA stress. In summary, we demonstrated that GsAPK is a Glycine soja ABA activated calcium independent SnRK-type kinase presumably involved in ABA mediated stress signal transduction

Effects of Comparative Metabolism on Tomato Fruit Quality under Different Levels of Root Restriction

In a soilless culture (perlite substrate), root restriction cannot only reduce production costs but also improve fruit quality. Therefore, this study used different levels of root restriction [T1: 0.5 L, T2: 4 L, nonrestriction treatment (CK): 35 L] on tomatoes to explore their impact on quality. Results showed that total soluble solids (TSS), glucose, fructose, and sucrose contents were increased, whereas L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine, and titratable acidity were decreased under two restriction treatments. Meanwhile, root restriction also promoted the accumulation of phenylalanine and proline. For lycopene and flavonoid biosynthesis (prunin, naringin, naringenin), the restriction groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. Overall, T1 and T2 treatment had a better effect than CK treatment. This study provided an idea for improving substrate use efficiency and tomato quality
