    Second random-phase approximation with the Gogny force. First applications

    We present the first applications of the second random-phase-approximation model with the finite-range Gogny interaction. We discuss the advantages of using such an interaction in this type of calculations where 2 particle-2 hole configurations are included. The results found in the present work confirm the well known general features of the second random-phase approximation spectra: we find a large shift, several MeV, of the response centroids to lower energies with respect to the corresponding random-phase-approximation values. As known, these results indicate that the effects of the 1 particle-1 hole/2 particle-2 hole and 2 particle-2 hole/2 particle-2 hole couplings are important. It has been found that the changes of the strength distributions with respect to the standard random-phase-approximation results are particularly large in the present case. This important effect is due to some large neutron-proton matrix elements of the interaction and indicates that these matrix elements (which do not contribute in the mean-field calculations employed in the conventional fit procedures of the force parameters) should be carefully constrained to perform calculation

    Among the grave goods of the ancient Veneto burials, ceramic spindle whorls, reels and counterweights are quite common: they are related to the female world, of which the textile manufacturing was an important element. Some years ago, in a paper written for the catalougue of the exhibition Le ore e I giorni delle donne, Verucchio 2007, we started an analysis aimed at recognizing the specific indicators of weaving, such as distaffs, spindles, thread spacers, needles, buttons, along with the recently discovered weaving tablets from Este. The goal of that work was to understand the various levels of specialization involved in the different phases of the production process. We discussed some tool associations that could be considered as “toolkits”, along with some clear diachronic changes in these sets. In this paper we continued this analysis by approaching old and new data from a numerical and ponderal point of view, in order to better understand the specific function of some classes of artifacts, and be able to make hypoteses about the “invisible” tools (wooden spindles, typology and typometry of the looms…). Furthermore, a complete reconstruction of the textiles production process could help us understanding the change (from an individual, domestic activity to a large-scale production) the textile manufacturing underwent during the 1st millennium BC

    We study the nature of the low-lying dipole strength in neutron-rich nuclei, often associated to the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. The states are described within the Hartree-Fock plus RPA formalism, using different parametrizations of the Skyrme interaction.     Multiphonon excitations and pygmy resonances in tin isotopes

    We study, within a semiclassical coupled-channels approach, the possible effects of anharmonicities and non linearities on the excitation of the so-called pygmy resonances in several Sn isotopes and using two different Skyrme interactions. In the energy region of the pygmy resonances, there are a few low-lying multiphonon states. The question is whether they may contribute to the observed peak. Calculations show that the inelastic cross sections in the relevant energy region have an increase that varies from 3% to 21% depending on the isotope and on the kind of Skyrme force used.     The modulation of sirtuins and apoptotic proteins in rats after exhaustive exercise

    A large body of evidence shows that a single bout of strenuous exercise induces oxidative stress in circu- lating human lymphocytes leading to lipid peroxide- tion, DNA damage, mitochondrial perturbations, and protein oxidation. In a training experiment, Wistar rats were divided into control group (CG) and exer- cise group (EG). After a running level exercise until exhaustion, we observed an increase in the mRNA content and protein expression of SIRT1 and SIRT7 in the EG compared to the CG. Moreover, such train- ing exercise did not change mRNA transcripts and protein expression of FOXO3A and GADD45. We also observed an increase of pro-apoptotic protein bax and a decrease of the anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2 in the EG. Accordingly, we observed a caspase-3 activation and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage only in EG rats. Statistical analysis of the data showed a significant correlation between SIRT1 and SIRT7 expression and apoptotic proteins such as bax, bcl-2 in both tissues. We conclude that, in both muscle, such exercise activates both a damaging apoptotic mecha- nism with bax increase and bcl-2 decrease and a counterbalancing protective mechanism with SIRT1 and SIRT7 increase

    Excitations of pygmy dipole resonances in exotic and stable nuclei via Coulomb and nuclear fields

    We study heavy-ion inelastic scattering processes in neutron-rich nuclei including the full response to the different multipolarities. Among these we focus in particular on the excitation of low-lying dipole states commonly associated to the pygmy dipole resonance. The multipole response is described within the Hartree-Fock plus RPA formalism with Skyrme interaction. We show how the combined information from reactions processes involving the Coulomb and different mixtures of isoscalar and isovector nuclear interactions can provide a clue to reveal the characteristic features of these states. We have performed calculation for the excitation of 132Sn generated in the reactions with 4He, 40Ca, and 48Ca at several incident energies, as well as for the system 17O +208Pb. Our results suggest that the investigation of the PDR states can be better carried out at low incident energies (below 50 MeV/nucleon).     A focus on selected perspectives of the NUMEN project

    The use of double charge exchange reactions is discussed in view of their application to extract information that may be helpful to determinate the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of neutrinoless double beta decay half-life. The strategy adopted in the experimental campaigns performed at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud and in the analysis methods within the NUMEN project is briefly described, emphasizing the advantages of the multi-channel approach to nuclear reaction data analysis. An overview on the research and development activities on the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer is also given, with a focus on the chosen technological solutions for the focal plane detector which will guarantee the performances at high-rate conditions

    Recent results on heavy-ion direct reactions of interest for 0νββ decay at INFN LNS

    Neutrinoless double beta decay of nuclei, if observed, would have important implications on fundamental physics. In particular it would give access to the effective neutrino mass. In order to extract such information from 0νββ decay half-life measurements, the knowledge of the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) is of utmost importance. In this context the NUMEN and the NURE projects aim to extract information on the NME by measuring cross sections of Double Charge Exchange reactions in selected systems which are expected to spontaneously decay via 0νββ. In this work an overview of the experimental challenges that NUMEN is facing in order to perform the experiments with accelerated beams and the research and development activity for the planned upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities is reported
