Double dynamical regime of confined water
The Van Hove self correlation function of water confined in a silica pore is
calculated from Molecular Dynamics trajectories upon supercooling. At long time
in the relaxation region we found that the behaviour of the real space
time dependent correlators can be decomposed in a very slow, almost frozen,
dynamics due to the bound water close to the substrate and a faster dynamics of
the free water which resides far from the confining surface. For free water we
confirm the evidences of an approach to a crossover mode coupling transition,
previously found in Q space. In the short time region we found that the two
dynamical regimes are overimposed and cannot be distinguished. This shows that
the interplay between the slower and the faster dynamics emerges in going from
early times to the relaxation region, where a layer analysis of the
dynamical properties can be performed.Comment: 6 pages with 9 figures. RevTeX. Accepted for pulbication in J. Phys.

New high-performance liquid chromatography-dad method for analytical determination of arbutin and hydroquinone in rat plasma
Natural substances present in herbal preparations should be carefully used because they can give toxic or therapeutic effects despite of their amount or the way of administration. The safety of products of vegetable origin must be assessed before commercialisation by monitoring the active ingredients and their metabolites. This study was therefore designed to identify and quantify arbutin and its metabolite hydroquinone, naturally present in Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng plant in rat plasma, after an acute and subacute administration of aqueous arbutin solution in Wistar rats. For this purpose a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection was developed to assess the pharmacokinetic of arbutin and hydroquinone in plasma of female rats treated with aqueous arbutin solutions. The detection (arbutin: 0.0617 µg/ml and hydroquinone 0.0120 µg/ml) and quantification (arbutin: 0.2060 µg/ml and hydroquinone: 0.0400 µg/ml) limits were determined. At the arbutin concentration level of 10.7 µg/ml repeatability was 13.33% and its recovery 93.4±6.93%, while at the hydroquinone concentration level of 10.6 µg/ml repeatability was 11.66% and its recovery 92.9±7.75%. Furthermore the method was fully validated and the obtained data indicate that the new method provides good performances
Anomalous relaxation kinetics and charge density wave correlations in underdoped BaPb1-xBixO3
Superconductivity often emerges in proximity of other symmetry-breaking
ground states, such as antiferromagnetism or charge-density-wave (CDW) order.
However, the subtle inter-relation of these phases remains poorly understood,
and in some cases even the existence of short-range correlations for
superconducting compositions is uncertain. In such circumstances, ultrafast
experiments can provide new insights, by tracking the relaxation kinetics
following excitation at frequencies related to the broken symmetry state. Here,
we investigate the transient terahertz conductivity of BaPb1-xBixO3 - a
material for which superconductivity is adjacent to a competing CDW phase -
after optical excitation tuned to the CDW absorption band. In insulating BaBiO3
we observed an increase in conductivity and a subsequent relaxation, which are
consistent with quasiparticles injection across a rigid semiconducting gap. In
the doped compound BaPb0.72Bi0.28O3 (superconducting below Tc=7K), a similar
response was also found immediately above Tc. This observation evidences the
presence of a robust gap up to T=40 K, which is presumably associated with
short-range CDW correlations. A qualitatively different behaviour was observed
in the same material fo T>40 K. Here, the photo-conductivity was dominated by
an enhancement in carrier mobility at constant density, suggestive of melting
of the CDW correlations rather than excitation across an optical gap. The
relaxation displayed a temperature dependent, Arrhenius-like kinetics,
suggestive of the crossing of a free-energy barrier between two phases. These
results support the existence of short-range CDW correlations above Tc in
underdoped BaPb1-xBixO3, and provide new information on the dynamical interplay
between superconductivity and charge order.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
An X-ray view of Mrk 705: A borderline narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy
Mrk 705 exhibits optical properties of both narrow- and broad-line Seyfert 1
galaxies. We examine the X-ray properties of this borderline object utilising
proprietary and public data from Chandra, ASCA, ROSAT and RXTE, spanning more
than twelve years. Though long-term flux variability from the pointed
observations appears rather modest (about 3 times), we do find examples of rare
large amplitude outbursts in the RXTE monitoring data. There is very little
evidence of long-term spectral variability as the low- and high-energy spectra
appear constant with time. A 6.4 keV emission line is detected in the ASCA
spectra of Mrk 705, but not during the later, higher flux state Chandra
observation. However, the upper limit on the equivalent width of a line in the
Chandra spectrum is consistent with a constant-flux emission line and a
brighter continuum, suggesting that the line is emitted from distant material
such as the putative torus. Overall, the X-ray properties of Mrk 705 appear
typical of BLS1 activity.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A (Research Note
XMM-Newton observation of the ULIRG NGC 6240: The physical nature of the complex Fe K line emission
We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy
NGC 6240. The 0.3-10 keV spectrum can be successfully modelled with: (i) three
collisionally ionized plasma components with temperatures of about 0.7, 1.4,
and 5.5 keV; (ii) a highly absorbed direct power-law component; and (iii) a
neutral Fe K_alpha and K_beta line. We detect a significant neutral column
density gradient which is correlated with the temperature of the three plasma
components. Combining the XMM-Newton spectral model with the high spatial
resolution Chandra image we find that the temperatures and the column densities
increase towards the center.
With high significance, the Fe K line complex is resolved into three distinct
narrow lines: (i) the neutral Fe K_alpha line at 6.4 keV; (ii) an ionized line
at about 6.7 keV; and (iii) a higher ionized line at 7.0 keV (a blend of the Fe
XXVI and the Fe K_beta line). While the neutral Fe K line is most probably due
to reflection from optically thick material, the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI emission
arises from the highest temperature ionized plasma component.
We have compared the plasma parameters of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy
NGC 6240 with those found in the local starburst galaxy NGC 253. We find a
striking similarity in the plasma temperatures and column density gradients,
suggesting a similar underlying physical process at work in both galaxies.Comment: 8 pages including 9 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
Field induced evolution of regular and random 2D domain structures and shape of isolated domains in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3
The shapes of isolated domains produced by application of the uniform external electric field in different experimental conditions were investigated experimentally in single crystalline lithium niobate LiNbO3 and lithium tantalate LiTaO3. The study of the domain kinetics by computer simulation and experimentally by polarization reversal of the model structure using two-dimensional regular electrode pattern confirms applicability of the kinetic approach to explanation of the experimentally observed evolution of the domain shape and geometry of the domain structure. It has been shown that the fast domain walls strictly oriented along X directions appear after domain merging
CXCR4-targeted and MMP-responsive iron oxide nanoparticles for enhanced magnetic resonance imaging
MRI offers high spatial resolution with excellent tissue penetration but it has limited sensitivity and the commonly administered contrast agents lack specificity. In this study, two sets of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were synthesized that were designed to selectively undergo copper-free click conjugation upon sensing of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes, thereby leading to a self-assembled superparamagnetic nanocluster network with T2 signal enhancement properties. For this purpose, IONPs with bioorthogonal azide and alkyne surfaces masked by polyethylene glycol (PEG) layers tethered to CXCR4-targeted peptide ligands were synthesized and characterized. The IONPs were tested in vitro and T2 signal enhancements of around 160 % were measured when the IONPs were incubated with cells expressing MMP2/9 and CXCR4. Simultaneous systemic administration of the bioorthogonal IONPs in tumor-bearing mice demonstrated the signal-enhancing ability of these ‘smart’ self-assembling nanomaterials
Frequency and Circadian Timing of Eating May Influence Biomarkers of Inflammation and Insulin Resistance Associated with Breast Cancer Risk.
Emerging evidence suggests that there is interplay between the frequency and circadian timing of eating and metabolic health. We examined the associations of eating frequency and timing with metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers putatively associated with breast cancer risk in women participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination 2009-2010 Survey. Eating frequency and timing variables were calculated from 24-hour food records and included (1) proportion of calories consumed in the evening (5 pm-midnight), (2) number of eating episodes per day, and (3) nighttime fasting duration. Linear regression models examined each eating frequency and timing exposure variable with C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations and the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). Each 10 percent increase in the proportion of calories consumed in the evening was associated with a 3 percent increase in CRP. Conversely, eating one additional meal or snack per day was associated with an 8 percent reduction in CRP. There was a significant interaction between proportion of calories consumed in the evening and fasting duration with CRP (p = 0.02). A longer nighttime fasting duration was associated with an 8 percent lower CRP only among women who ate less than 30% of their total daily calories in the evening (p = 0.01). None of the eating frequency and timing variables were significantly associated with HOMA-IR. These findings suggest that eating more frequently, reducing evening energy intake, and fasting for longer nightly intervals may lower systemic inflammation and subsequently reduce breast cancer risk. Randomized trials are needed to validate these associations
