    Pollution prevention via recovery of cerium (IV) oxide in optics company

    Pollution prevention methods were applied at an optics manufacturer in an effort to improve recovery of a valuable polishing component, cerium oxide (ceria), 77% of which was lost to dragout and sewer discharge. Centrifugation and microfiltratiion were evaluated to develop a process that would increase recovery of used ceria, which would then be sent back to the ceria supplier for reclamation and reuse. Full-scale implementation included a high-speed centrifuge that operates continuously with a microfiltration system through recirculation in a single process tank. Sydor Optics has improved ceria recovery from 23% to 48%, saving thousands of dollars annually

    Electron Production in Proton Collisions: Total Cross Sections

    Existing data on the ionization of neutral atoms and molecules by proton impact are reviewed, and electron production cross-section data are collected. The three major experimental methods are discussed and possible sources of error identified. Some theoretical cross sections are discussed, and well-established methods of relating them to measured cross sections are reviewed. A mathematical equation is fitted to the weighted experimental data for each target, and these fits are adjusted to be consistent with appropriate theoretical calculations and with electron impact and photoionization data. Recommended values of total cross sections for proton-impact ionization are given

    Cobalt Complexes of Bulky PNP Ligand: H2 Activation and Catalytic Two-Electron Reactivity in Hydrogenation of Alkenes and Alkynes

    The reactivity of cobalt pincer complexes supported by the bulky tetramethylated PNP ligands Me4PNPR(R = iPr, tBu) has been investigated. In these ligands, the undesired H atom loss reactivity observed earlier in some classical CH2-arm PNP cobalt complexes is blocked, allowing them to be utilized for promoting two-electron catalytic transformations at the cobalt center. Accordingly, reaction of the formally CoIMe complex 3 with H2 under ambient pressure and temperature afforded the CoIII trihydride 4-H, in a reaction cascade reasoned to proceed by two-electron oxidative addition and reductive eliminations. This mechanistic proposal, alongside the observance of alkene insertion and ethane production upon sequential exposure of 3 to ethylene and H2, prompted an exploration into 3 as a catalyst for hydrogenation. Complex 4-H, formed in situ from 3 under H2, was found to be active in the catalytic hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes. The proposed two-electron mechanism is reminiscent of the platinum group metals and demonstrates the utility of the bulky redox-innocent Me4PNPR ligand in the avoidance of one-electron reactivity, a concept that may show broad applicability in expanding the scope of earth-abundant first-row transition-metal catalysis.journal articl

    Determining Curie temperatures in dilute ferromagnetic semiconductors: high Curie temperature (Ga,Mn)As

    In this paper, we use simultaneous magnetometry and electrical transport measurements to critically examine ways in which the Curie temperature (TC) values have been determined in studies of dilute magnetic semiconductors. We show that, in sufficiently homogeneous samples, TC can be accurately determined from remanent magnetization and magnetic susceptibility and from the positions of the peak in the temperature derivative of the resistivity. We also show that the peak of the resistivity does not occur at TC, as illustrated by a (Ga,Mn)As sample for which the peak of the resistivity is at 21361K when TC is only 17861

    Personalizing Actions in Context for Risk Management using Semantic Web Technologies

    International audienceThe process of managing risks of client contracts is manual and resource-consuming, particularly so for Fortune 500 companies. As an example, Accenture assesses the risk of eighty thousand contracts every year. For each contract, different types of data will be consolidated from many sources and used to compute its risk tier. For high-risk tier contracts, a Quality Assurance Director (QAD) is assigned to mitigate or even prevent the risk. The QAD gathers and selects the recommended actions during regular portfolio review meetings to enable leadership to take the appropriate actions. In this paper, we propose to automatically personalize and contextualize actions to improve the efficacy. Our approach integrates enterprise and external data into a knowledge graph and interprets actions based on QADs' profiles through semantic reasoning over this knowledge graph. User studies showed that QADs could efficiently select actions that better mitigate the risk than the existing approach

    'To live and die [for] Dixie': Irish civilians and the Confederate States of America

    Around 20,000 Irishmen served in the Confederate army in the Civil War. As a result, they left behind, in various Southern towns and cities, large numbers of friends, family, and community leaders. As with native-born Confederates, Irish civilian support was crucial to Irish participation in the Confederate military effort. Also, Irish civilians served in various supporting roles: in factories and hospitals, on railroads and diplomatic missions, and as boosters for the cause. They also, however, suffered in bombardments, sieges, and the blockade. Usually poorer than their native neighbours, they could not afford to become 'refugees' and move away from the centres of conflict. This essay, based on research from manuscript collections, contemporary newspapers, British Consular records, and Federal military records, will examine the role of Irish civilians in the Confederacy, and assess the role this activity had on their integration into Southern communities. It will also look at Irish civilians in the defeat of the Confederacy, particularly when they came under Union occupation. Initial research shows that Irish civilians were not as upset as other whites in the South about Union victory. They welcomed a return to normalcy, and often 'collaborated' with Union authorities. Also, Irish desertion rates in the Confederate army were particularly high, and I will attempt to gauge whether Irish civilians played a role in this. All of the research in this paper will thus be put in the context of the Drew Gilpin Faust/Gary Gallagher debate on the influence of the Confederate homefront on military performance. By studying the Irish civilian experience one can assess how strong the Confederate national experiment was. Was it a nation without a nationalism
