Applying the expanding photosphere and standardized candle methods to Type II-Plateau supernovae at cosmologically significant redshifts: the distance to SN 2013eq
Based on optical imaging and spectroscopy of the Type II-Plateau SN 2013eq,
we present a comparative study of commonly used distance determination methods
based on Type II supernovae. The occurrence of SN 2013eq in the Hubble flow (z
= 0.041 +/- 0.001) prompted us to investigate the implications of the
difference between "angular" and "luminosity" distances within the framework of
the expanding photosphere method (EPM) that relies upon a relation between flux
and angular size to yield a distance. Following a re-derivation of the basic
equations of the EPM for SNe at non-negligible redshifts, we conclude that the
EPM results in an angular distance. The observed flux should be converted into
the SN rest frame and the angular size, theta, has to be corrected by a factor
of (1+z)^2. Alternatively, the EPM angular distance can be converted to a
luminosity distance by implementing a modification of the angular size. For SN
2013eq, we find EPM luminosity distances of D_L = 151 +/- 18 Mpc and D_L = 164
+/- 20 Mpc by making use of different sets of dilution factors taken from the
literature. Application of the standardized candle method for Type II-P SNe
results in an independent luminosity distance estimate (D_L = 168 +/- 16 Mpc)

Distance statistics in large toroidal maps
We compute a number of distance-dependent universal scaling functions
characterizing the distance statistics of large maps of genus one. In
particular, we obtain explicitly the probability distribution for the length of
the shortest non-contractible loop passing via a random point in the map, and
that for the distance between two random points. Our results are derived in the
context of bipartite toroidal quadrangulations, using their coding by
well-labeled 1-trees, which are maps of genus one with a single face and
appropriate integer vertex labels. Within this framework, the distributions
above are simply obtained as scaling limits of appropriate generating functions
for well-labeled 1-trees, all expressible in terms of a small number of basic

Environment and Obesity in the National Children\u27s Study
Objective: In this review we describe the approach taken by the National Children’s Study (NCS), a 21-year prospective study of 100,000 American children, to understanding the role of environmental factors in the development of obesity.
Data sources and extraction: We review the literature with regard to the two core hypotheses in the NCS that relate to environmental origins of obesity and describe strategies that will be used to test each hypothesis.
Data synthesis: Although it is clear that obesity in an individual results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, control of the obesity epidemic will require understanding of factors in the modern built environment and chemical exposures that may have the capacity to disrupt the link between energy intake and expenditure. The NCS is the largest prospective birth cohort study ever undertaken in the United States that is explicitly designed to seek information on the environmental causes of pediatric disease.
Conclusions: Through its embrace of the life-course approach to epidemiology, the NCS will be able to study the origins of obesity from preconception through late adolescence, including factors ranging from genetic inheritance to individual behaviors to the social, built, and natural environment and chemical exposures. It will have sufficient statistical power to examine interactions among these multiple influences, including gene–environment and gene–obesity interactions. A major secondary benefit will derive from the banking of specimens for future analysis
Universal fluctuations in the support of the random walk
A random walk starts from the origin of a d-dimensional lattice. The
occupation number n(x,t) equals unity if after t steps site x has been visited
by the walk, and zero otherwise. We study translationally invariant sums M(t)
of observables defined locally on the field of occupation numbers. Examples are
the number S(t) of visited sites; the area E(t) of the (appropriately defined)
surface of the set of visited sites; and, in dimension d=3, the Euler index of
this surface. In d > 3, the averages (t) all increase linearly with t as
t-->infinity. We show that in d=3, to leading order in an asymptotic expansion
in t, the deviations from average Delta M(t)= M(t)-(t) are, up to a
normalization, all identical to a single "universal" random variable. This
result resembles an earlier one in dimension d=2; we show that this

Statistics of geodesics in large quadrangulations
We study the statistical properties of geodesics, i.e. paths of minimal
length, in large random planar quadrangulations. We extend Schaeffer's
well-labeled tree bijection to the case of quadrangulations with a marked
geodesic, leading to the notion of "spine trees", amenable to a direct
enumeration. We obtain the generating functions for quadrangulations with a
marked geodesic of fixed length, as well as with a set of "confluent
geodesics", i.e. a collection of non-intersecting minimal paths connecting two
given points. In the limit of quadrangulations with a large area n, we find in
particular an average number 3*2^i of geodesics between two fixed points at
distance i>>1 from each other. We show that, for generic endpoints, two
confluent geodesics remain close to each other and have an extensive number of
contacts. This property fails for a few "exceptional" endpoints which can be
linked by truly distinct geodesics. Results are presented both in the case of
finite length i and in the scaling limit i ~ n^(1/4). In particular, we give

The Earliest Near-infrared Time-series Spectroscopy of a Type Ia Supernova
We present ten medium-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio near-infrared
(NIR) spectra of SN 2011fe from SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility
(IRTF) and Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) on Gemini North, obtained
as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project. This data set constitutes the
earliest time-series NIR spectroscopy of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), with the
first spectrum obtained at 2.58 days past the explosion and covering -14.6 to
+17.3 days relative to B-band maximum. C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m is detected
in SN 2011fe with increasing strength up to maximum light. The delay in the
onset of the NIR C I line demonstrates its potential to be an effective tracer
of unprocessed material. For the first time in a SN Ia, the early rapid decline
of the Mg II {\lambda}1.0927 {\mu}m velocity was observed, and the subsequent
velocity is remarkably constant. The Mg II velocity during this constant phase
locates the inner edge of carbon burning and probes the conditions under which
the transition from deflagration to detonation occurs. We show that the Mg II
velocity does not correlate with the optical light-curve decline rate
{\Delta}m15. The prominent break at ~1.5 {\mu}m is the main source of concern
for NIR k-correction calculations. We demonstrate here that the feature has a
uniform time evolution among SNe Ia, with the flux ratio across the break
strongly correlated with {\Delta}m15. The predictability of the strength and
the onset of this feature suggests that the associated k-correction

Distance statistics in quadrangulations with a boundary, or with a self-avoiding loop
We consider quadrangulations with a boundary and derive explicit expressions
for the generating functions of these maps with either a marked vertex at a
prescribed distance from the boundary, or two boundary vertices at a prescribed
mutual distance in the map. For large maps, this yields explicit formulas for
the bulk-boundary and boundary-boundary correlators in the various encountered
scaling regimes: a small boundary, a dense boundary and a critical boundary
regime. The critical boundary regime is characterized by a one-parameter family
of scaling functions interpolating between the Brownian map and the Brownian
Continuum Random Tree. We discuss the cases of both generic and self-avoiding
boundaries, which are shown to share the same universal scaling limit. We
finally address the question of the bulk-loop distance statistics in the
context of planar quadrangulations equipped with a self-avoiding loop. Here
again, a new family of scaling functions describing critical loops is

RIPK3-mediated cell death is involved in DUX4-mediated toxicity in facioscapulohumeral dystrophy
BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) is caused by mutations leading to the aberrant expression of the DUX4 transcription factor in muscles. DUX4 was proposed to induce cell death, but the involvement of different death pathways is still discussed. A possible pro-apoptotic role of DUX4 was proposed, but as FSHD muscles are characterized by necrosis and inflammatory infiltrates, non-apoptotic pathways may be also involved. METHODS: We explored DUX4-mediated cell death by focusing on the role of one regulated necrosis pathway called necroptosis, which is regulated by RIPK3. We investigated the effect of necroptosis on cell death in vitro and in vivo experiments using RIPK3 inhibitors and a RIPK3-deficient transgenic mouse model. RESULTS: We showed in vitro that DUX4 expression causes a caspase-independent and RIPK3-mediated cell death in both myoblasts and myotubes. In vivo, RIPK3-deficient animals present improved body and muscle weights, a reduction of the aberrant activation of the DUX4 network genes, and an improvement of muscle histology. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide evidence for a role of RIPK3 in DUX4-mediated cell death and open new avenues of research
