AbstractObjectiveTo establish the continuity care on persons suffering from diabetes type 2 (DT2) and their caregiver following hospital discharge, through home-visit interventions which can contribute to the improvement of lifestyles.MethodThe nursing process was performed on a patient with DT2 and the corresponding primary caregiver through a nursing assessment which included the use of the 24-Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire and the Instrument to Measure Lifestyles in patients with Diabetes Type 2. The identification of needs through the NANDA taxonomy allowed informational, relational and managerial interventions based on the Nursing Interventions Classification. The educational interventions were performed during periodic sessions under the informed consent of the participants and through an interactive methodology. The effectiveness was assessed through a final evaluation of the patient and corresponding caregiver.ResultsAn increment in the level of knowledge of the illness and an improvement in the lifestyle of the person with DT2 and the corresponding caregiver, in the nutrition, physical activity, emotions, and therapeutic adherence domains were observed.ConclusionThe continuity care on the person with DT2 is a critical tool to improve the lifestyle and level of knowledge, and to reduce the risk of complications and hospital re-entries
Game of tops: trends in GBIFs community of users
Building on the development of Biodiversity Informatics, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) undertook the task of enabling access to the world¿s wealth of biodiversity data via the Internet. To date, GBIF has become, in many respects, the most extensive biodiversity information exchange infrastructure in the world, opening up a full range of possibilities for science
Influence of normal and radial contributions of local current density on local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
A new tri-electrode probe is presented and applied to local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) measurements. As opposed to two-probe systems, the three-probe one allows measurement not only of normal, but also of radial contributions of local current densities to the local impedance values. The results concerning the cases of the blocking electrode and the electrode with faradaic reaction are discussed from the theoretical point of view for a disk electrode. Numerical simulations and experimental results are compared for the case of the ferri/ferrocyanide electrode reaction at the Pt working electrode disk. At the centre of the disk, the impedance taking into account both normal and radial contributions was in good agreement with the local impedance measured in terms of only the normal contribution. At the periphery of the electrode, the impedance taking into account both normal and radial contributions differed significantly from the local impedance measured in terms of only the normal contribution. The radial impedance results at the periphery of the electrode are in good agreement with the usual explanation that the associated larger current density is attributed to the geometry of the electrode, which exhibits a greater accessibility at the electrode edge
Improved Performance of an Epoxy Matrix as a Result of Combining Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene
We present an easy and effective way to improve the mechanical properties of an epoxy matrix by reinforcing it with a combination of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). These nanocomposites were prepared with different load of nanofillers: 0.1, 0.4, 0.7, 1.0 wt% and a neat epoxy. Ratios of graphene oxide and reduced graphene (GO : RGO) employed were: 0 : 1, 0.25 : 0.75, 0.5 : 0.5, 0.75 : 0.25, and 1 : 0. Results show that with only 0.4 wt% and a ratio 0.2 : 0.75 of GO : RGO, tensile strength and tensile toughness are 52% and 152% higher than neat epoxy while modulus of elasticity was improved ~20%. The obtained results suggest that it is possible achieve advantageous properties by combining graphene in oxidized and reduced conditions as it shows a synergic effect by the presence of both nanofillers
Real-Time Big Data Analytics in Smart Cities from LoRa-Based IoT Networks
The currently burst of the Internet of Things (IoT) tech-nologies
implies the emergence of new lines of investigation regarding not only to hardware
and protocols but also to new methods of pro-duced data analysis satisfying the
IoT environment constraints: a real-time and a big data approach. The Real-time
restriction is about the continuous generation of data provided by the endpoints
connected to an IoT network; due to the connection and scaling capabilities of an IoT
network, the amount of data to process is so high that Big data tech-niques
become essential. In this article, we present a system consisting of two main
modules. In one hand, the infrastructure, a complete LoRa based network designed,
tested and deployment in the Pablo de Olavide University and, on the other side, the
analytics, a big data streaming sys-tem that processes the inputs produced by the
network to obtain useful, valid and hidden information.Ministerio de EconomÃa y Competitividad TIN2017-88209-C2-1-
The tragedy of the biodiversity data commons: a data impediment creeping nigher?
Researchers are embracing the open access movement to facilitate unrestricted availability
of scientific results. One sign of this willingness is the steady increase in data freely
shared online, which has prompted a corresponding increase in the number of papers
using such data. Publishing datasets is a time-consuming process that is often seen as a
courtesy, rather than a necessary step in the research process. Making data accessible
allows further research, provides basic information for decision-making and contributes
to transparency in science. Nevertheless, the ease of access to heaps of data carries a
perception of `free lunch for all¿, and the work of data publishers is largely going unnoticed.
Acknowledging such a significant effort involving the creation, management
and publication of a dataset remains a flimsy, not well established practice in the scientific
community. In a meta-analysis of published literature, we have observed various
dataset citation practices, but mostly (92%) consisting of merely citing the data repository
rather than the data publisher. Failing to recognize the work of data publishers might
lead to a decrease in the number of quality datasets shared online, compromising potential
research that is dependent on the availability of such data. We make an urgent appeal
to raise awareness about this issue
Completeness of Digital Accessible Knowledge (DAK) about terrestrial mammals in the Iberian Peninsula
The advent of online data aggregator infrastructures has facilitated the accumulation of Digital Accessible Knowledge (DAK) about biodiversity. Despite the vast amount of freely available data records, their usefulness for research depends on completeness of each body of data regarding their spatial, temporal and taxonomic coverage. In this paper, we assess the completeness of DAK about terrestrial mammals distributed across the Iberian Peninsula. We compiled a dataset with all records about mammals occurring in the Iberian Peninsula available in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and in the national atlases from Portugal and Spain. After cleaning the dataset of errors as well as records lacking collection dates or not determined to species level, we assigned all occurrences to a 10-km grid. We assessed inventory completeness by calculating the ratio between observed and expected richness (based on the Chao2 richness index) in each grid cell and classified cells as well-sampled or under-sampled. We evaluated survey coverage of well-sampled cells along four environmental gradients and temporal coverage. Out of 796,283 retrieved records, quality issues led us to remove 616,141 records unfit for this use. The main reason for discarding records was missing collection dates. Only 25.95% cells contained enough records to robustly estimate completeness. The DAK about terrestrial mammals from the Iberian Peninsula was low, and spatially and temporally biased
