    New England Cod Collapse and the Climate.

    To improve fishery management, there is an increasing need to understand the long-term consequences of natural and anthropogenic climate variability for ecological systems. New England's iconic cod populations have been in decline for several decades and have recently reached unprecedented lows. We find that 17% of the overall decline in Gulf of Maine cod biomass since 1980 can be attributed to positive phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This is a consequence of three results: i) a 1-unit increase in the NAO winter index is associated with a 17% decrease in the spring biomass of age-1 cod the following year; ii) this NAO-driven decrease persists as the affected cohort matures; iii) fishing practices appear to exacerbate NAO's direct biological effect such that, since 1913, a 1-unit increase in the NAO index lowers subsequent cod catch for up to 19 years. The Georges Bank cod stock displays similar patterns. Because we statistically detect a delay between the NAO and subsequent declines in adult biomass, our findings imply that observed current NAO conditions can be used in stock forecasts, providing lead time for adaptive policy. More broadly, our approach can inform forecasting efforts for other fish populations strongly affected by natural and anthropogenic climatic variation

    A Proposed Conflict of Interest Rule for Attorney-Mediators

    Maintaining the success and fairness of mediation requires mediators to be impartial toward all parties and to protect the confidentiality of mediation sessions. Attorney-mediators encounter conflicts of interest, based on prior or subsequent representation of clients, that can disrupt impartiality or confidentiality. When attorneys practice mediation, it is unclear where they should look for guidance: attorney rules of professional conduct, mediator ethical standards, or both. Additionally, attorney-mediators encounter unique issues that ethical guidelines designed for attorneys or mediators do not address adequately. This Comment proposes a comprehensive conflict of interest rule for inclusion in the Rules of Professional Conduct that is tailored specifically to attorney-mediators

    Design, Synthesis and Analysis of Small Molecule Heterocyclic Aromatic-Based CXCR4 Modulators

    CXCR4 is a chemokine receptor that has been linked to several disease related pathways including: HIV-1 proliferation, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory disease and cancer metastasis. The interaction of the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) with C-X-C chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) plays a key role in triggering these disease related pathways. Various antagonists for these receptors have been synthesized and tested, but many are not useful clinically either because of toxicity or poor pharmacokinetics. Some of the most extensive CXCR4 antagonist libraries stem from a class of compounds, p-xylyl-enediamines, which all feature a benzene ring as the core of the compound. This work focuses on the design and synthesis of a new class of compounds that show potential as CXCR4 antagonists by using heterocyclic aromatic rings (2,6-pyridine, 2,5-furan, 2,5-pyrazine and 3,4-thiophene) as the core of the scaffold. After synthesis, these analogues were probed through a variety of assays and techniques by our collaborators in the Shim lab at Emory University including: preliminary binding assays, Matrigel invasion assays, carrageenan mouse paw edema tests, and in silico analysis. In silico analysis also probed 2,5-thiophene-based analogues previously synthesized. This work has produced the beginnings of a new library of CXCR4 antagonists and has identified fifteen hit compounds that are promising leads for further testing and modification

    The Economic Value of Rebuilding Fisheries

    The global demand for protein from seafood –- whether wild, caught or cultured, whether for direct consumption or as feed for livestock –- is high and projected to continue growing. However, the ocean's ability to meet this demand is uncertain due to either mismanagement or, in some cases, lack of management of marine fish stocks. Efforts to rebuild and recover the world's fisheries will benefit from an improved understanding of the long-term economic benefits of recovering collapsed stocks, the trajectory and duration of different rebuilding approaches, variation in the value and timing of recovery for fisheries with different economic, biological, and regulatory characteristics, including identifying which fisheries are likely to benefit most from recovery, and the benefits of avoiding collapse in the first place. These questions are addressed in this paper using a dynamic bioeconomic optimisation model that explicitly accounts for economics, management, and ecology of size-structured exploited fish populations. Within this model framework, different management options (effort controls on small-, medium-, and large-sized fish) including management that optimises economic returns over a specified planning horizon are simulated and the consequences compared. The results show considerable economic gains from rebuilding fisheries, with magnitudes varying across fisheries

    Elasticity of an interfacial particle raft

    We study the collective behaviour of a close packed monolayer of non-Brownian particles at a fluid-liquid interface. Such a particle raft forms a two-dimensional elastic solid and can support anisotropic stresses and strains, e.g. it buckles in uniaxial compression and cracks in tension. We characterise this solid in terms of a Young's modulus and Poisson ratio derived from simple theoretical considerations and show the validity of these estimates by using an experimental buckling assay to deduce the Young's modulus.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Review of world experience and properties of materials for encapsulation of terrestrial photovoltaic arrays

    Published and unpublished information relating to encapsulation systems and materials properties was collected by searching the literature and appropriate data bases (over 1,300 documents were selected and reviewed) and by personal contacts including site and company visits. A data tabulation summarizing world experience with terrestrial photovoltaic arrays (50 installations) is presented in the report. Based on criteria of properties, processability, availability, and cost, candidate materials were identified which have potential for use in encapsulation systems for arrays with a lifetime of over 20 years high reliability, an efficiency greater than 10 percent, a total price less than $500/kW, and a production capacity of 500,000 kW/yr. The recommended materials (all commercially available) include, depending upon the device design, various borosilicate and soda-lime glasses and numerous polymerics suitable for specific encapsulation system functions

    Process Optimization By Flow Sheet Simulation

    Optimization of large or complex chemical processes often requires simplifying the system to reduce the mathematics to a form manageable by available algorithms or to reduce the time required to perform the computations. In many cases, such simplification alters the solution of the problem. Flow sheet simulation programs are ideally suited to the study of chemical processes, although the computational time is generally considered excessive for detailed optimization of complex systems by the usual procedures. This paper discusses the modifications needed to apply flow sheet simulation programs to the optimization of chemical processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the use of several optimization algorithms, including stochastic procedures, in this modified program are discussed and examples compared. © 1976, American Chemical Society.
