Creating diamond color centers for quantum optical applications
Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have distinct promise as solid-state
qubits. This is because of their large dipole moment, convenient level
structure and very long room-temperature coherence times. In general, a
combination of ion irradiation and subsequent annealing is used to create the
centers, however for the rigorous demands of quantum computing all processes
need to be optimized, and decoherence due to the residual damage caused by the
implantation process itself must be mitigated. To that end we have studied
photoluminescence (PL) from NV, NV and GR1 centers formed by ion
implantation of 2MeV He ions over a wide range of fluences. The sample was
annealed at C to minimize residual vacancy diffusion, allowing for
the concurrent analysis of PL from NV centers and irradiation induced vacancies
(GR1). We find non-monotic PL intensities with increasing ion fluence,
monotonic increasing PL in NV/NV and GR1/(NV + NV) ratios, and
increasing inhomogeneous broadening of the zero-phonon lines with increasing
ion fluence. All these results shed important light on the optimal formation
conditions for NV qubits. We apply our findings to an off-resonant photonic
quantum memory scheme using vibronic sidebands

Boosting up quantum key distribution by learning statistics of practical single photon sources
We propose a simple quantum-key-distribution (QKD) scheme for practical
single photon sources (SPSs), which works even with a moderate suppression of
the second-order correlation of the source. The scheme utilizes a
passive preparation of a decoy state by monitoring a fraction of the signal via
an additional beam splitter and a detector at the sender's side to monitor
photon number splitting attacks. We show that the achievable distance increases
with the precision with which the sub-Poissonian tendency is confirmed in
higher photon number distribution of the source, rather than with actual
suppression of the multi-photon emission events. We present an example of the
secure key generation rate in the case of a poor SPS with , in
which no secure key is produced with the conventional QKD scheme, and show that
learning the photon-number distribution up to several numbers is sufficient for
achieving almost the same achievable distance as that of an ideal SPS.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures; published version in New J. Phy
Single photon emitters based on Ni/Si related defects in single crystalline diamond
We present investigations on single Ni/Si related color centers produced via
ion implantation into single crystalline type IIa CVD diamond. Testing
different ion dose combinations we show that there is an upper limit for both
the Ni and the Si dose 10^12/cm^2 and 10^10/cm^2 resp.) due to creation of
excess fluorescent background. We demonstrate creation of Ni/Si related centers
showing emission in the spectral range between 767nm and 775nm and narrow
line-widths of 2nm FWHM at room temperature. Measurements of the intensity
auto-correlation functions prove single-photon emission. The investigated color
centers can be coarsely divided into two groups: Drawing from photon statistics
and the degree of polarization in excitation and emission we find that some
color centers behave as two-level, single-dipole systems whereas other centers
exhibit three levels and contributions from two orthogonal dipoles. In
addition, some color centers feature stable and bright emission with saturation
count rates up to 78kcounts/s whereas others show fluctuating count rates and

Completely Positive Maps and Classical Correlations
We expand the set of initial states of a system and its environment that are
known to guarantee completely positive reduced dynamics for the system when the
combined state evolves unitarily. We characterize the correlations in the
initial state in terms of its quantum discord [H. Ollivier and W. H. Zurek,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 017901 (2001)]. We prove that initial states that have
only classical correlations lead to completely positive reduced dynamics. The
induced maps can be not completely positive when quantum correlations
including, but not limited to, entanglement are present. We outline the
implications of our results to quantum process tomography experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Prevalence and correlates of depressive disorders in people with Type 2 diabetes: results from the International Prevalence and Treatment of Diabetes and Depression (INTERPRET‐DD) study, a collaborative study carried out in 14 countries
Aims
To assess the prevalence and management of depressive disorders in people with Type 2 diabetes in different countries.
Methods
People with diabetes aged 18–65 years and treated in outpatient settings were recruited in 14 countries and underwent a psychiatric interview. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire and the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale. Demographic and medical record data were collected.
Results
A total of 2783 people with Type 2 diabetes (45.3% men, mean duration of diabetes 8.8 years) participated. Overall, 10.6% were diagnosed with current major depressive disorder and 17.0% reported moderate to severe levels of depressive symptomatology (Patient Health Questionnaire scores >9). Multivariable analyses showed that, after controlling for country, current major depressive disorder was significantly associated with gender (women) (PPPPP<0.0001). The proportion of those with either current major depressive disorder or moderate to severe levels of depressive symptomatology who had a diagnosis or any treatment for their depression recorded in their medical records was extremely low and non-existent in many countries (0–29.6%).
Conclusions
Our international study, the largest of this type ever undertaken, shows that people with diabetes frequently have depressive disorders and also significant levels of depressive symptoms. Our findings indicate that the identification and appropriate care for psychological and psychiatric problems is not the norm and suggest a lack of the comprehensive approach to diabetes management that is needed to improve clinical outcomes
Comparison of resource use by COPD patients on inhaled therapies with long-acting bronchodilators: a database study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this analysis was to compare health care costs and utilization among COPD patients who had long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA) OR long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA); LABA AND LAMA; or LABA, LAMA, AND inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) prescription claims.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a 12 month pre-post, retrospective analysis using COPD patients in a national administrative insurance database. Propensity score and exact matching were used to match patients 1:1:1 between the LABA or LAMA (formoterol, salmeterol, or tiotropium), LABA and LAMA (tiotropium/formoterol or tiotropium/salmeterol), and LABA, LAMA and ICS (bronchodilators plus steroid) groups. Post-period comparisons were evaluated with analysis of covariance. Costs were evaluated from a commercial payer perspective.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 523 patients were matched using 29 pre-period variables (e.g., demographics, medication exposure). Post-match assessments indicated balance among the cohorts. COPD-related costs differed among groups (LABA or LAMA 2,823 SE = 62; LABA, LAMA and ICS 911 SE = 91) compared to the LABA and LAMA therapy group (100 greater for the LABA or LAMA therapy group relative to both LABA and LAMA (p = .0018) and LABA, LAMA, and ICS (p = .0071) therapy groups. While there was no observed difference in outpatient costs, there was a slightly higher number of outpatient visits per patient in the LABA and LAMA (25.5 SE = 0.9, p = 0.0070) relative to the LABA or LAMA therapy group (22.3 SE = 0.8) and higher utilization (89.7% of patients) with COPD visits in the LABA and LAMA therapy group relative to both the LABA or LAMA (73.8%; p < .0001) and LABA, LAMA and ICS therapy groups (85.3; p = 0.0305).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Significant cost differences driven mainly by pharmaceuticals were observed among LABA or LAMA, LABA and LAMA and LABA, LAMA and ICS therapies. A COPD-related cost offset was observed from single bronchodilator to two bronchodilators. Addition of an ICS with two bronchodilators resulted in higher treatment costs without reduction in other COPD-related costs compared with two bronchodilators.</p
High-sensitivity diamond magnetometer with nanoscale resolution
We present a novel approach to the detection of weak magnetic fields that
takes advantage of recently developed techniques for the coherent control of
solid-state electron spin quantum bits. Specifically, we investigate a magnetic
sensor based on Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in room-temperature diamond. We
discuss two important applications of this technique: a nanoscale magnetometer
that could potentially detect precession of single nuclear spins and an optical
magnetic field imager combining spatial resolution ranging from micrometers to
millimeters with a sensitivity approaching few femtotesla/Hz.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure
