    S6: a Smart, Social and SDN-based Surveillance System for Smart-cities

    Abstract In the last few years, Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) have been introduced in the Internet as a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services. Working together, they are able to consolidate and deliver the networking components using standard IT virtualization technologies not only on high-volume servers, but also in end user premises, Telco operator edge and access nodes thus allowing the emergence of new services. In this context, this paper presents a smart video surveillance platform designed to exploit the facilities offered by full SDN-NFV networks. This platform is based on free and open source software running on Provider Equipment (PE), so allowing function deployment simplification and management cost reduction

    A Holographic Diffuser Generalised Optical Differentiation Wavefront Sensor

    The wavefront sensors used today at the biggest World's telescopes have either a high dynamic range or a high sensitivity, and they are subject to a linear trade off between these two parameters. A new class of wavefront sensors, the Generalised Optical Differentiation Wavefront Sensors, has been devised, in a way not to undergo this linear trade off and to decouple the dynamic range from the sensitivity. This new class of WFSs is based on the light filtering in the focal plane from a dedicated amplitude filter, which is a hybrid between a linear filter, whose physical dimension is related to the dynamic range, and a step in the amplitude, whose size is related to the sensitivity. We propose here a possible technical implementation of this kind of WFS, making use of a simple holographic diffuser to diffract part of the light in a ring shape around the pin of a pyramid wavefront sensor. In this way, the undiffracted light reaches the pin of the pyramid, contributing to the high sensitivity regime of the WFS, while the diffused light is giving a sort of static modulation of the pyramid, allowing to have some signal even in high turbulence conditions. The holographic diffuser zeroth order efficiency is strictly related to the sensitivity of the WFS, while the diffusing angle of the diffracted light gives the amount of modulation and thus the dynamic range. By properly choosing these two parameters it is possible to build a WFS with high sensitivity and high dynamic range in a static fashion. Introducing dynamic parts in the setup allows to have a set of different diffuser that can be alternated in front of the pyramid, if the change in the seeing conditions requires it.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Hypovitaminosis D and COVID-19

    As the main title 'COVID-19 revolution: a new challenge for the internist' states, the global coronavirus infection disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represented a new challenge for the internists. This paper is part of a series of articles written during the difficult period of the ongoing global pandemic and published all together in this fourth issue of the Italian Journal of Medicine, with the aim of sharing the direct experiences of those who were the first to face this severe emergency, expressing each point of view in the management of COVID-19 in relation to other diseases. Each article is therefore the result of many efforts and a joint collaboration between many colleagues from the Departments of Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine of several Italian hospitals, engaged in the front line during the pandemic. These preliminary studies therefore cover diagnostic tools available to health care personnel, epidemiological reflections, possible new therapeutic approaches, discharge and reintegration procedures to daily life, the involvement of the disease not only in the lung, aspects related to various comorbidities, such as: coagulopathies, vasculitis, vitamin D deficiency, gender differences, etc.. The goal is to offer a perspective, as broad as possible, of everything that has been done to initially face the pandemic in its first phase and provide the tools for an increasingly better approach, in the hope of not arriving unprepared to a possible second wave.     Improvement of Hyperthermia Properties of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles by Surface Coating

    Magnetic hyperthermia is an oncological therapy that exploits magnetic nanoparticles activated by radiofrequency magnetic fields to produce a controlled temperature increase in a diseased tissue. The specific loss power (SLP) of magnetic nanoparticles or the capability to release heat can be improved using surface treatments, which can reduce agglomeration effects, thus impacting on local magnetostatic interactions. In this work, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are synthesized via a coprecipitation reaction and fully characterized in terms of structural, morphological, dimensional, magnetic, and hyperthermia properties (under the Hergt–Dutz limit). Different types of surface coatings are tested, comparing their impact on the heating efficacy and colloidal stability, resulting that sodium citrate leads to a doubling of the SLP with a substantial improvement in dispersion and stability in solution over time; an SLP value of around 170 W/g is obtained in this case for a 100 kHz and 48 kA/m magnetic field

    Il panel mira ad attraversare su pi\uf9 livelli il tema della conservazione del digitale nativo nell\u2019ambito degli archivi di persona, con particolare riguardo alla conservazione e gestione dei materiali di autori contemporanei. L\u2019intento \ue8 quello di avviare una riflessione condivisa con la comunit\ue0 scientifica su metodologie e strumenti da adottare in questo campo di indagine non del tutto esplorato e ancora carico di criticit\ue0 teoriche e operative. Se \ue8 chiaro ormai che la conservazione degli archivi nativi digitali \ue8 una sfida sempre pi\uf9 importante nei pi\uf9 diversi settori della nostra societ\ue0 (l\u2019ambito della pubblica amministrazione e quello forense sono tra gli esempi pi\uf9 noti), \ue8 altrettanto vero che per gli archivi di persona, nel contesto specifico della produzione letteraria, i casi di studio a nostra disposizione sono ancora sporadici e non sufficienti per individuare del tutto delle buone pratiche. Pare dunque necessario un confronto all\u2019interno della comunit\ue0 scientifica delle DH, non tanto per condividere risultati quanto per illustrare le problematiche maggiori e individuare delle ipotesi di lavoro. Il panel vuole aprirsi al dibattito con un approccio multidisciplinare, cercando di affrontare le questioni archivistiche pi\uf9 importanti relative all\u2019acquisizione e conservazione dei fondi, alla loro archiviazione, gestione e fruizione. Verr\ue0 dato particolare rilievo alla scelta di formati e standard, alla qualit\ue0 dei dati e dei servizi, ai numerosi aspetti critici sotto il profilo giuridico, alla gestione del versioning e agli strumenti per la ricerca e la didattica. Nel corso della sessione saranno esaminate due esperienze italiane: il lavoro sull\u2019archivio ibrido di Massimo Vannucci e il progetto PAD \u2013 Pavia Archivi Digitali, che ha avviato nel 2010 un percorso di sperimentazione su archivi di scrittori contemporanei, perfezionando negli anni alcune strategie per le fasi di preparazione dei conferimenti e acquisizione dei materiali

    Prospects of Deep Field Surveys with Global-MCAO on an ELT

    Several astronomical surveys aimed at the investigation of the extragalactic components were carried out in order to map systematically the universe and its constituents. An excellent level of detail is needed, and it is possible only using space telescopes or with the application of adaptive optics (AO) techniques for ground-based observatories. By simulating K-band observations of 6000 high-redshift galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South region, we have already shown how an extremely large telescope can carry out photometric surveys successfully using the Global-MCAO, a natural guide stars based technique that allows the development of extragalactic research, otherwise impracticable without using laser guide stars. As the outcome of the analysis represents an impact science case for the new instruments on upcoming ground-based telescopes, here we show how the investigation of other observed deep fields could profit from such a technique. Further to an overview of the surveys suitable for the proposed approach, we show preliminary estimations both on geometrical (FoV and height) and purely AO perspectives (richness and homogeneity of guide stars in the area) for planned giant telescope.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, AO4ELT5 conferenc

    Baclofen for the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder in Patients With Liver Cirrhosis: 10 Years After the First Evidence

    Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic and relapsing condition characterized by harmful alcohol intake and behavioral-cognitive changes. AUD is the most common cause of liver disease in the Western world. Alcohol abstinence is the cornerstone of therapy in alcoholic patients affected with liver disease. Medical recommendations, brief motivational interventions and psychosocial approach are essential pieces of the treatment for these patients; however, their efficacy alone may not be enough to achieve total alcohol abstinence. The addition of pharmacological treatment could improve clinical outcomes in AUD patients. Moreover, pharmacological treatments for AUD are limited in patients with advanced liver disease, since impaired liver function affects drugs metabolism and could increase the risk of drugs-related hepatotoxicity. At present, only baclofen has been tested in RCTs in patients with advanced liver disease. This medication was effective to reduce alcohol intake, to promote alcohol abstinence and to prevent relapse in AUD patients affected by liver cirrhosis. In addition, the drug showed a safe profile in these patients. In this review, clinical studies about efficacy and safety of baclofen administration in patients with AUD and advanced liver disease will be reviewed. Open question about the most appropriate dose of the drug, duration of the treatment and need of additional studies will also be discussed

    Site effect studies following the 2016 Mw 6.0 Amatrice Earthquake (Italy): the Emersito Task Force activities

    On August 24, 2016, at 01:36 UTC a MW 6.0 earthquake struck an extensive area of the Central Apennines (Italy) be-tween the towns of Norcia and Amatrice. Due to the mainshock magnitude and the widespread damaging level of build-ings in the epicentral area, the Emersito task force has been mobilized by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). The aim of Emersito is to carry out and coordinate the monitoring of local site effects, caused by geological and geomorphological settings. During the first days of the seismic emergency, Emersito installed a tempo-rary seismic network for site effect studies at 4 municipalities close to the epicentral area (Amandola, Civitella del Tronto, Montereale and Capitignano), using 22 stations equipped with both velocimetric and accelerometric sensors. The selection of the sites where stations have been installed was mainly driven by the proximity to the epicentral area (without interfere with the rescue operations) and by peculiar geologic and geomorphologic settings (topographic irregu-larities, fault zones, alluvial plains). Preliminary analyses performed on ambient noise and aftershocks signals show that directional amplification effects may have occurred at stations installed on the top of topographic irregularities. We also observed the lengthening and amplification of the seismograms and a variability of the peaked frequency across the sedi-mentary basin between Montereale and Capitignano, probably related to a different thickness of the deposits.
