    Productive Development Policies in Argentina

    In contrast to the limited impact of aggregate-level productive development policies (PDPs) in Argentina, micro-level PDPs in several sectors have proven highly successful. This study seeks to understand how these PDPs succeeded in a challenging environment, what kinds of mechanisms were generated to ensure adaptation and learning, and how these PDPs evolved. Of importance is not only policy design and implementation, but also the policymaking. Following a historical overview of PDP in Argentina, the paper presents three case studies: i) the Argentine Technology Fund (FONTAR), a horizontal PDP; ii) the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), a vertical PDP; and iii) the application of both horizontal and vertical PDPs to the biotechnology sector.     Nozzle for a needle-free injection system

    Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, June 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 33).The purpose of this thesis was to develop an optimized nozzle for the needle-free injection device currently under construction in MIT's Bio-Instrumentation Laboratory. Initial predictions from ANSYS, a finite element modeling program, indicated that the injection performance could be noticeably improved with a new nozzle design. After running several flow simulations, a final nozzle design was selected, and a strategy was developed to manufacture the new nozzle. The new nozzle was placed in the injection device and measurements of the jet velocity were recorded via a high speed camera. A 2mm long nozzle with a contoured profile consisting of a linear segment tangent to an arc segment at the nozzle exit produced an exit velocity of 45.5m/s at the end of the injection stroke. This showed almost a 19 percent increase in velocity compared to the older nozzle which produced 38. lm/s upon termination of the injection cycle. However, the results of the new nozzle vary from injection to injection. Thus there is a need for continued testing in the future, and possibly more refined measuring techniques such as depth of penetration into the gel or developing improvements with the current video setup.by Gabriel Nestor Sanchez.S.B

    Cophenetic metrics for phylogenetic trees, after Sokal and Rohlf

    Phylogenetic tree comparison metrics are an important tool in the study of evolution, and hence the definition of such metrics is an interesting problem in phylogenetics. In a paper in Taxon fifty years ago, Sokal and Rohlf proposed to measure quantitatively the difference between a pair of phylogenetic trees by first encoding them by means of their half-matrices of cophenetic values, and then comparing these matrices. This idea has been used several times since then to define dissimilarity measures between phylogenetic trees but, to our knowledge, no proper metric on weighted phylogenetic trees with nested taxa based on this idea has been formally defined and studied yet. Actually, the cophenetic values of pairs of different taxa alone are not enough to single out phylogenetic trees with weighted arcs or nested taxa. In this paper we define a family of cophenetic metrics that compare phylogenetic trees on a same set of taxa by encoding them by means of their vectors of cophenetic values of pairs of taxa and depths of single taxa, and then computing the LpL^p norm of the difference of the corresponding vectors. Then, we study, either analytically or numerically, some of their basic properties: neighbors, diameter, distribution, and their rank correlation with each other and with other metrics.Comment: The "authors' cut" of a paper published in BMC Bioinformatics 14:3 (2013). 46 page

    Tourism's Impact on Long-Run Mexican Economic Growth

    Tourism is one of the most important factors in the productivity of Mexican economy with significant multiplier effects on economic activity. This paper investigates possible causal relationships among tourism expenditure, real exchange rate and economic growth by using quarterly data. Johansen cointegration analysis shows the existence of one cointegrated vector among real GDP, tourism expenditure and real exchange rate where the corresponding elasticities are positive. The tourism-led growth hypothesis is confirmed through cointegration and causality testing. Tourism expenditure and Real Exchange Rate (RER) are weakly exogenous to real GDP. A modified version of the Granger Causality test shows that causality goes unidirectionally from tourism expenditure and RER to real GDP.
