A New Test of the Einstein Equivalence Principle and the Isotropy of Space
Recent research has established that nonsymmetric gravitation theories like
Moffat's NGT predict that a gravitational field singles out an orthogonal pair
of polarization states of light that propagate with different phase velocities.
We show that a much wider class of nonmetric theories encompassed by the formalism predict such violations of the Einstein equivalence principle.
This gravity-induced birefringence of space implies that propagation through a
gravitational field can alter the polarization of light. We use data from
polarization measurements of extragalactic sources to constrain birefringence
induced by the field of the Galaxy. Our new constraint is times sharper
than previous ones.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, 3 Postscript figure
Experimental Study of Isothermal Wake-Flow Characteristics of Various Flame-Holder Shapes
An investigation of the isothermal wake-flow characteristics of several flame-holder shapes was carried out in a 4- by 4-inch flow chamber. The effects of flame-holder-shape changes on the characteristics of the Karman vortices and thus on the recirculation zones to which experimenters have related the combustion process were obtained for several flame holders. The results may furnish a basis of correlation, of combustion efficiency and stability for similarly shaped flame holders in combustion studies. Values of the spacing ratio-(ratio of lateral spacing to longitudinal spacing of vortices] obtained for the various shapes approximated the theoretical value of 0.36 given by the Karman stability analysis. Variations in vortex strength of more than 200 percent and in frequency of more than 60 percent were accomplished by varying flame-holder shape. A maximum increase in the recirculation parameter of 56 percent over that for a conventional V-gutter was also obtained. Varying flameholder shape and size enables the designer to select many schedules of variations in vortex strength and frequency- not obtainable by changing size only and may make it possible to approach theoretical maximum vortex strength for any given frequency
Cannibalism as a life boat mechanism
Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one
Derived Categories of Coherent Sheaves and Triangulated Categories of Singularities
In this paper we establish an equivalence between the category of graded
D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W
and the triangulated category of singularities of the fiber of W over zero. The
main result is a theorem that shows that the graded triangulated category of
singularities of the cone over a projective variety is connected via a fully
faithful functor to the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the
base of the cone. This implies that the category of graded D-branes of type B
in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W is connected via a
fully faithful functor to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the
projective variety defined by the equation W=0.Comment: 26 pp., LaTe
Electric field control and optical signature of entanglement in quantum dot molecules
The degree of entanglement of an electron with a hole in a vertically coupled
self-assembled dot molecule is shown to be tunable by an external electric
field. Using atomistic pseudopotential calculations followed by a configuration
interaction many-body treatment of correlations, we calculate the electronic
states, degree of entanglement and optical absorption. We offer a novel way to
spectroscopically detect the magnitude of electric field needed to maximize the
entanglement.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Non-linear screening of spherical and cylindrical colloids: the case of 1:2 and 2:1 electrolytes
From a multiple scale analysis, we find an analytic solution of spherical and
cylindrical Poisson-Boltzmann theory for both a 1:2 (monovalent co-ions,
divalent counter-ions) and a 2:1 (reversed situation) electrolyte. Our approach
consists in an expansion in powers of rescaled curvature , where
is the colloidal radius and the Debye length of the electrolytic
solution. A systematic comparison with the full numerical solution of the
problem shows that for cylinders and spheres, our results are accurate as soon
as . We also report an unusual overshooting effect where the
colloidal effective charge is larger than the bare one.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
The Importance of Hydration in Wound Healing: Reinvigorating the clinical perspective
Balancing skin hydration levels is important as any disruption in skin integrity will result in disturbance of the dermal water balance. The discovery that a moist wound healing environment actively supports the healing response when compared to a dry environment highlights the importance of water and good hydration levels for optimal wound healing.
The benefits of “wet” or “hyper-hydrated” wound healing appears to offer benefits that are similar to those offered by moist wound healing over wounds healing in a dry environment. This suggests that the presence of free water itself during wound healing may not be detrimental to healing but that any adverse effects of wound fluid on tissues is more likely related to the biological components contained within chronic wound exudate (e.g. elevated protease levels).
Appropriate dressings applied to wounds must be able to absorb not only the exudate but also retain this excess fluid together with its protease solutes while concurrently preventing desiccation. This is particularly important in the case of chronic wounds where peri-wound skin barrier properties are compromised and there is increased permeation across the injured skin barrier. This review discusses the importance of appropriate levels of hydration in skin with a particular focus on the need for optimal hydration levels for effective healing
Many-Body Approximation Scheme Beyond GW
We explore the combination of the extended dynamical mean field theory
(EDMFT) with the GW approximation (GWA); the former sums the local
contributions to the self-energies to infinite order in closed form and the
latter handles the non-local ones to lowest order. We investigate the different
levels of self-consistency that can be implemented within this method by
comparing to the exact QMC solution of a finite-size model Hamiltonian. We find
that using the EDMFT solution for the local self-energies as input to the GWA
for the non-local self-energies gives the best result.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure
