    We have deposited aluminium oxide films by atomic layer deposition on titanium oxide nanoparticles in a fluidized bed reactor at 27 ± 3 °C and atmospheric pressure. Working at room temperature allows coating heat-sensitive materials, while working at atmospheric pressure would simplify the scale-up of this process. We performed 4, 7 and 15 cycles by dosing a predefined amount of precursors, i.e., trimethyl aluminium and water. We obtained a growth per cycle of 0.14–0.15 nm determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), similar to atomic layer deposition (ALD) experiments at a few millibars and ~180 °C. We also increased the amount of precursors dosed by a factor of 2, 4 and 6 compared to the base case, maintaining the same purging time. The growth per cycle (GPC) increased, although not linearly, with the dosing time. In addition, we performed an experiment at 170 °C and 1 bar using the dosing times increased by factor 6, and obtained a growth per cycle of 0.16 nm. These results were verified with elemental analysis, which showed a good agreement with the results from TEM pictures. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a negligible amount of unreacted molecules inside the alumina films. Overall, the dosage of the precursors is crucial to control precisely the growth of the alumina films at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Dosing excess of precursor provokes a chemical vapour deposition type of growth due to the physisorption of molecules on the particles, but this can be avoided by working at high temperatures

    A population balance model for high shear granulation

    In a previous paper, Hoornaert et al. (Powder Technol. 96 (1998); 116-128) presented data from granulation experiments performed in a 50 L Lodige high shear mixer. In this study that same data was simulated with a population balance model. Based on an analysis of the experimental data, the granulation process was divided into three separate stages: nucleation, induction, and coalescence growth. These three stages were then simulated separately, with promising results. it is possible to derive a kernel that fit both the induction and the coalescence growth stage. Modeling the nucleation stage proved to be more challenging due to the complex mechanism of nucleus formation. From this work some recommendations are made for the improvement of this type of model

    Liquid distribution as a means to describing the granule growth mechanism

    Copper concentrate (chalcopyrite) was granulated in a rotating drum with a diameter of 0.3 m and a length of 0.2 m. Water was used as the binder and it was sprayed onto the powder bed with a nozzle. This material exhibited induction type behaviour, which was defined by Iveson and Litster [AIChE J. 44 (1998) 1510]. Induction type behaviour is characterized by the occurrence of an induction stage, during which the granules are gradually being compacted and little or no growth occurs. At the end of this induction stage, binder liquid is squeezed from the interior of the granules onto the granule surface and the granules are then surface-wet. This results in a rapid growth rate of the granules. Different types of experiments were conducted. The influence of the nozzle pressure and the distance from the nozzle to the powder bed on the growth behaviour of the granules as well as on the binder distribution was examined. The results of these experiments led to the postulation of a modified mechanism for induction type behaviour: it was found that after the binder was delivered, there were large granules containing a high amount of binder and small granules containing less binder. During the induction stage, the granules are compacted and binder liquid continuously appears at the surface of the large granules. These wet spots that are continuously being formed pick up the dry and small granules. When all the small granules have been picked up, further expulsion of binder liquid onto the granules' surface results in granules that remain surface-wet. This phenomenon marks the end of the induction stage and it coincides with the disappearance of the small granules. The hypothesis was tested by selectively removing the smaller granules during an experiment. As expected, this resulted in a shorter induction time

    Growth regime map for liquid-bound granules: further development and experimental validation

    An attempt was made to quantify the boundaries and validate the granule growth regime map for liquid-bound granules recently proposed by Iveson and Litster (AlChE J. 44 (1998) 1510). This regime map postulates that the type of granule growth behaviour is a function of only two dimensionless groups: the amount of granule deformation during collision (characterised by a Stokes deformation number, St(def)) and the maximum granule pore saturation, s(max). The results of experiments performed with a range of materials (glass ballotini, iron ore fines, copper chalcopyrite powder and a sodium sulphate and cellulose mixture) using both drum and high shear mixer granulators were examined. The drum granulation results gave good agreement with the proposed regime map. The boundary between crumb and steady growth occurs at St(def) of order 0.1 and the boundary between steady and induction growth occurs at St(def) of order 0.001. The nucleation only boundary occurs at pore saturations that increase from 70% to 80% with decreasing St(def). However, the high shear mixer results all had St(def) numbers which were too large. This is most likely to be because the chopper tip-speed is an over-estimate of the average impact velocity granules experience and possibly also due to the dynamic yield strength of the materials being significantly greater than the yield strengths measured at low strain rates. Hence, the map is only a useful tool for comparing the granulation behaviour of different materials in the same device. Until we have a better understanding of the flow patterns and impact velocities in granulators, it cannot be used to compare different types of equipment. Theoretical considerations also revealed that several of the regime boundaries are also functions of additional parameters not explicitly contained on the map, such as binder viscosity.     Deposition Mechanism of Aluminum Oxide on Quantum Dot Films at Atmospheric Pressure and Room Temperature

    Stability of quantum dot (QD) films is an issue of concern for applications in devices such as solar cells, LEDs, and transistors. This paper analyzes and optimizes the passivation of such QD films using gas-phase deposition, resulting in enhanced stability. Crucially, we deposited alumina at economically attractive conditions, room temperature and atmospheric pressure, on (1,2-ethanediamine) capped PbSe QD films using an approach based on atomic layer deposition (ALD), with trimethylaluminum (TMA) and water as precursors. We performed coating experiments from 1 to 25 cycles on the QD films, finding that alumina formed from the first exposure of TMA. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy points to the presence of oxygen-rich compounds on the bare QD films, most likely from entrapped solvent molecules during the assembly of the QD films. These oxygenated compounds and the amine groups of the organic ligands react with TMA in the first cycle, resulting in a fast growth of alumina. Using 10 cycles resulted in a QD film that was optically stable for at least 27 days. Depositing alumina at ambient conditions is preferred, since the production of the QD films is also carried out at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, allowing combination of both processes in a single go
