GPS monitoring of a steel box girder viaduct
Structural performance monitoring of bridges has increased as major infrastructure ages and is required to sustain loads that are significantly greater than those predicted during design. Structural stiffness and/or mass distribution can change over the lifespan of a bridge structure. Resulting changes in profile or resonant frequency provide key indicators of change, and may identify structural defects. Field tests using GPS for monitoring relatively small deformations were carried out on a steel box girder viaduct bridge in the UK. The configuration consisted of five GPS receivers located at key locations on the viaduct and two reference GPS receivers. GPS data was collected at either 10 Hz or 20 Hz and post-processed using proprietary software, along with appropriate filtering and spectral analysis. Three main frequencies were clearly detected by the GPS in the vertical component. A previously reported frequency of approximately 0.56 Hz was identified along with two other frequencies. The peak vertical deflections lie in the range of ± 50 mm, while lateral and longitudinal deflections of much smaller magnitude - in the order of a few mm - are also measured. The use of GPS leads to readily obtained and useful engineering data for continued monitoring of structures

Copyright © 2012 Thomas Telford Ltd.The use of carrier phase kinematic GPS (global positioning system) has evolved into a reliable technique to measure both the three-dimensional magnitudes and frequencies of movements of structures. Techniques have been developed that tackle errors caused by multipath, tropospheric delay and issues relating to satellite geometry. GPS-derived movements compare well with data from both design predictions and structural models. Results from field trials carried out on the Forth Road Bridge are presented. This paper brings together key results that outline the procedure as well as a series of new data that indicate other potential applications. GPS data were collected continuously over a period of 46 h at a minimum rate of 10 Hz. During the trials wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and temperature were also recorded. Frequently there was very heavy traffic flow, and at one point a special load (a 100-t lorry) passed over simultaneously to the heavy daytime flow of traffic. Data from a planned load trial during a brief bridge closure are reported and compared with the limited results available from a finite element model. Measured vibration frequencies are also computed from GPS data and compared with those given in the literature. In addition, results indicating the change in structural characteristics are also presented â in particular changes of mass associated with changes in traffic loading are observed. The results show the performance of GPS as it has developed in recent years, and that it can now reliably be used as a significant part of structural health monitoring schemes, giving both the magnitude of quasi-static deflections in known time periods and hence the frequency of dynamic movements of structures.Forth Estuary Transport Authorit
Holographic Anyons in the ABJM Theory
We consider the holographic anyons in the ABJM theory from three different
aspects of AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we identify the holographic anyons by
using the field equations of supergravity, including the Chern-Simons terms of
the probe branes. We find that the composite of Dp-branes wrapped over CP3 with
the worldvolume magnetic fields can be the anyons. Next, we discuss the
possible candidates of the dual anyonic operators on the CFT side, and find the
agreement of their anyonic phases with the supergravity analysis. Finally, we
try to construct the brane profile for the holographic anyons by solving the
equations of motion and Killing spinor equations for the embedding profile of
the wrapped branes. As a by product, we find a BPS spiky brane for the dual

Posterior cricoid region fluoroscopic findings: the posterior cricoid plication.
The region posterior to the cricoid cartilage is challenging to assess fluoroscopically. The purpose of this investigation is to critically evaluate the posterior cricoid (PC) region on fluoroscopy and describe patterns of common findings. This was a case control study. All fluoroscopic swallowing studies performed between June 16, 2009, and February 9, 2010, were reviewed for features seen in the PC region. These findings were categorized into distinct patterns and compared to fluoroscopic studies performed in a cohort of normal volunteers. Two hundred patient studies and 149 healthy volunteer studies were reviewed. The mean age of the referred patient cohort and the volunteer cohort was 57 years (±19) and 61 years (±16), respectively (p > 0.05). The patient cohort was 53% male and the control cohort was 56% female (p > 0.05). Four groups were identified. Pharyngoesophageal webs were seen in 7% (10/149) of controls and 14% (28/200) of patients (p = 0.03). A PC arch impression was seen in 16% of patients (32/200) and controls (24/149) (p = 1). A PC plication was demonstrated in 23% (34/149) of controls and 30% (60/200) of patients (p = 0.13). No distinctive PC region findings were seen in 54% (81/149) of controls and 42% (84/200) of referred patients (p = 0.02). Four patients (2%) had both a web and a PC plication. Four categories of PC region findings were identified (unremarkable PC region, web, PC arch impression, and PC plication). Both patients referred for swallowing studies and healthy volunteers demonstrated esophageal webs, PC arch impressions, and PC plications. Only webs were more common in patients than in control subjects (p = 0.03). The PC impression and PC plication are likely to represent normal variants that may be identified on fluoroscopic swallow studies
Order release in a workload controlled flow-shop with sequence-dependent set-up times
In this paper, we report a simulation study on the role of sequence-dependent
set-up times in decision making at the order release level of a workload controlled
make-to-order flow-shop. The study evaluates the potential for set-ups savings,
dependent on the level of workload in the shop, for two alternative strategies,
namely considering set-up times centrally, within the release decision or locally,
within the dispatching decision. These strategies are compared and assessed on
the basis of two main performance measures namely time in system and standard
deviation of the job lateness. Results indicate that the local strategy, which has
been traditionally adopted in practice and in most of the studies dealing with
sequence-dependent set-up times, does not always give the best results.
The release frequency and the shop workload appear critical to the selection of

Adaptive Evolutionary Clustering
In many practical applications of clustering, the objects to be clustered
evolve over time, and a clustering result is desired at each time step. In such
applications, evolutionary clustering typically outperforms traditional static
clustering by producing clustering results that reflect long-term trends while
being robust to short-term variations. Several evolutionary clustering
algorithms have recently been proposed, often by adding a temporal smoothness
penalty to the cost function of a static clustering method. In this paper, we
introduce a different approach to evolutionary clustering by accurately
tracking the time-varying proximities between objects followed by static
clustering. We present an evolutionary clustering framework that adaptively
estimates the optimal smoothing parameter using shrinkage estimation, a
statistical approach that improves a naive estimate using additional
information. The proposed framework can be used to extend a variety of static
clustering algorithms, including hierarchical, k-means, and spectral
clustering, into evolutionary clustering algorithms. Experiments on synthetic
and real data sets indicate that the proposed framework outperforms static

Branes and fluxes in special holonomy manifolds and cascading field theories
We conduct a study of holographic RG flows whose UV is a theory in 2+1
dimensions decoupled from gravity, and the IR is the N=6,8 superconformal fixed
point of ABJM. The solutions we consider are constructed by warping the
M-theory background whose eight spatial dimensions are manifolds of special
holonomies sp(1) times sp(1) and spin(7). Our main example for the spin(7)
holonomy manifold is the A8 geometry originally constructed by Cvetic, Gibbons,
Lu, and Pope. On the gravity side, our constructions generalize the earlier
construction of RG flow where the UV was N=3 Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matter
system and are simpler in a number of ways. Through careful consideration of
Page, Maxwell, and brane charges, we identify the discrete and continuous
parameters characterizing each system. We then determine the range of the
discrete data, corresponding to the flux/rank for which the supersymmetry is
unbroken, and estimate the dynamical supersymmetry breaking scale as a function
of these data. We then point out the similarity between the physics of
supersymmetry breaking between our system and the system considered by
Maldacena and Nastase. We also describe the condition for unbroken
supersymmetry on class of construction based on a different class of spin(7)
manifolds known as B8 spaces whose IR is different from that of ABJM and

Does prohibitin expression regulate sperm mitochondrial membrane potential, sperm motility, and male fertility?
Prohibitin (PHB) is a highly conserved major sperm mitochondrial membrane protein whose absence in somatic cells is associated with mitochondrial membrane depolarization and increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our recent findings suggest that high levels of oxidants in human semen may contribute to male infertility and that sperm motility could be the earliest and most sensitive indicator of oxidative damage. Based on PHB's roles in mitochondrial sub-compartmentalization and respiratory chain assembly, we examine sperm PHB expression and mitochondrial membrane potential (MITO) in infertile men with poor sperm motility (asthenospermia, A) and/or low sperm concentrations (oligoasthenospermia, OA). Here, we demonstrate that MITO is significantly lower in sperm from A and OA subjects than in normospermic (N) subjects; the decrease is more severe for OA than for A subjects. PHB expression is also significantly lower in sperm from A and OA subjects. Significantly positive correlations are found among PHB expression, MITO, and sperm motility in normospermic, asthenospermic, and oligoasthenospermic subjects. Collectively, our observations lead to the hypothesis that PHB expression is an indicator of sperm quality in infertile men, and that it regulates sperm motility via an alteration in MITO and increased ROS levels. © Copyright 2012, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.published_or_final_versio
