The article analyzes the history of some Neapolitan criminal groups by using a great judicial documentation. The author focuses on their morphology and their insertion in the city’s neighborhoods, and examines the relations between local territory and international criminal activities. Using a micro-analytic approach she analyzes the different activities that founded the big sphere of the illegal economy: drug trafficking, the production of fake products, racketeering, the illegal occupation of public houses. An organization emerged which assures regular salaries to the affiliates and many resources to a wide world marginalized by the official economic sphere: a sort of an alternative welfare system that, however, rests upon violence and arbitrary acts

Historical collaborative geocoding

The latest developments in digital have provided large data sets that can increasingly easily be accessed and used. These data sets often contain indirect localisation information, such as historical addresses. Historical geocoding is the process of transforming the indirect localisation information to direct localisation that can be placed on a map, which enables spatial analysis and cross-referencing. Many efficient geocoders exist for current addresses, but they do not deal with the temporal aspect and are based on a strict hierarchy (..., city, street, house number) that is hard or impossible to use with historical data. Indeed historical data are full of uncertainties (temporal aspect, semantic aspect, spatial precision, confidence in historical source, ...) that can not be resolved, as there is no way to go back in time to check. We propose an open source, open data, extensible solution for geocoding that is based on the building of gazetteers composed of geohistorical objects extracted from historical topographical maps. Once the gazetteers are available, geocoding an historical address is a matter of finding the geohistorical object in the gazetteers that is the best match to the historical address. The matching criteriae are customisable and include several dimensions (fuzzy semantic, fuzzy temporal, scale, spatial precision ...). As the goal is to facilitate historical work, we also propose web-based user interfaces that help geocode (one address or batch mode) and display over current or historical topographical maps, so that they can be checked and collaboratively edited. The system is tested on Paris city for the 19-20th centuries, shows high returns rate and is fast enough to be used interactively.Comment: WORKING PAPE

Ruptures et continuités dans l’évolution de l’espace parisien. L’îlot de la Trinité entre les xviiie et xixe siècles

L’évolution de Paris au cours de la période contemporaine est souvent lue et interprétée comme un processus unique au cours duquel la ville de l’Ancien Régime se restructure pour se transformer progressivement en capitale du xixe siècle. Cette vision, bien connue et presque iconique, conjugue le développement des riches quartiers de l’Ouest avec l’essor de nouvelles formes architecturales et commerciales. Moins connue est la formation des pratiques et des images de cette nouvelle modernité urbaine ; celle-ci s’associe à la perte de lisibilité pour la partie la plus ancienne et populaire de la ville. Dans les représentations des contemporains, ces quartiers constituent un espace structurel immobile où s’entasse de manière désordonnée une population bariolée de commerçants, d’artisans, de manœuvres et de marginaux. Une étude approfondie, menée sur un îlot du centre parisien entre la fin du xviiie et la première moitié du xixe siècle, montre que, loin d’être délaissés et chaotiques, ces anciens quartiers se révèlent être des lieux dynamiques qui témoignent de l’essor d’une modernité « autre » que celle développée dans les nouveaux quartiers de l’Ouest.The evolution of Paris during the contemporary period is often represented as a single process, whereby a new urban modernity flourishes of on the grands boulevards and the rich areas in the western part of the city. Largely grounded on contemporary representations, these images are coupled with a perception of the older, more popular part of the city as as a structurally static space, chaotically populated by a colorful mixture of shopkeepers, artisans, workmen and those scraping a living on the fringes of society. An in-depth study of a central zone between the end of the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries shows that, far from being neglected and chaotic, these older quartiers saw dynamic development which contributed to the rise of an ‘alternative’ modernity from the one developing in the new areas in the west of the city

Multiple vertebral metastases from brain glioblastoma: An insidious complication

Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant and the most frequent of primary astrocytomas, typically involving the Central Nervous System (CNS) alone. Extra-CNS localizations (ECM) are exceptional, and vertebral dissemination is extremely uncommon. We present the case of a patient with vertebral dissemination from an intracranial GBM without intra-dural space invasion. The patient underwent a gross total tumor removal followed by radiation therapy (RT) with concomitant temozolomide chemotherapy (STUPP protocol). Following the appearance of back pain, patient underwent whole body computed tomography (CT) and spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Spinal-MRI highlighted multiple vertebral lesions not infiltrating dura mater being confined to vertebral bodies. CT scan demonstrated the absence of other repetitive lesions in both thorax and abdomen. Histological examination from a percutaneous CT-guided vertebral biopsy confirmed the suspicious of secondary localization from intracranial GBM. To the best of our knowledge this is the second reported case of vertebral metastases from GBM in absence of other ECM. This case raises the need for clinical suspicious of vertebral dissemination in case of GBM patient presenting with radicular, myelopathic symptoms or less specifically, back pain
