Feshbach Resonance Cooling of Trapped Atom Pairs
Spectroscopic studies of few-body systems at ultracold temperatures provide
valuable information that often cannot be extracted in a hot environment.
Considering a pair of atoms, we propose a cooling mechanism that makes use of a
scattering Feshbach resonance. Application of a series of time-dependent
magnetic field ramps results in the situation in which either zero, one, or two
atoms remain trapped. If two atoms remain in the trap after the field ramps are
completed, then they have been cooled. Application of the proposed cooling
mechanism to optical traps or lattices is considered.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; v.2: major conceptual change
Local tunneling spectroscopy of the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4
We present local tunneling spectroscopy in the optimally electron-doped
cuprate Sm2-xCexCuO4 x=0.15. A clear signature of the superconducting gap is
observed with an amplitude ranging from place to place and from sample to
sample (Delta~3.5-6meV). Another spectroscopic feature is simultaneously
observed at high energy above \pm 50meV. Its energy scale and temperature
evolution is found to be compatible with previous photoemission and optical
experiments. If interpreted as the signature of antiferromagnetic order in the
samples, these results could suggest the coexistence on the local scale of
antiferromagnetism and superconductivity on the electron-doped side of cuprate
superconductors
Energy efficient engine sector combustor rig test program
Under the NASA-sponsored Energy Efficient Engine program, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft has successfully completed a comprehensive combustor rig test using a 90-degree sector of an advanced two-stage combustor with a segmented liner. Initial testing utilized a combustor with a conventional louvered liner and demonstrated that the Energy Efficient Engine two-stage combustor configuration is a viable system for controlling exhaust emissions, with the capability to meet all aerothermal performance goals. Goals for both carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons were surpassed and the goal for oxides of nitrogen was closely approached. In another series of tests, an advanced segmented liner configuration with a unique counter-parallel FINWALL cooling system was evaluated at engine sea level takeoff pressure and temperature levels. These tests verified the structural integrity of this liner design. Overall, the results from the program have provided a high level of confidence to proceed with the scheduled Combustor Component Rig Test Program
Andreev Reflection in Heavy-Fermion Superconductors and Order Parameter Symmetry in CeCoIn_5
Differential conductance spectra are obtained from nanoscale junctions on the
heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn along three major crystallographic
orientations. Consistency and reproducibility of characteristic features among
the junctions ensure their spectroscopic nature. All junctions show a similar
conductance asymmetry and Andreev reflection-like conductance with reduced
signal (~ 10%-13%), both commonly observed in heavy-fermion superconductor
junctions. Analysis using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model indicates
that our data provide the first spectroscopic evidence for
symmetry. To quantify our conductance spectra, we propose a model by
considering the general phenomenology in heavy fermions, the two-fluid
behavior, and an energy-dependent density of states. Our model fits to the

Development of ultrasonic methods for hemodynamic measurements
A transcutanous method to measure instantaneous mean blood flow in peripheral arteries of the human body was defined. Transcutanous and implanted cuff ultrasound velocity measurements were evaluated, and the accuracies of velocity, flow, and diameter measurements were assessed for steady flow. Exact results for the Barabasi model of human dynamics
Human activity patterns display a bursty dynamics, with interevent times
following a heavy tailed distribution. This behavior has been recently shown to
be rooted in the fact that humans assign their active tasks different
priorities, a process that can be modeled as a priority queueing system [A.-L.
Barabasi, Nature 435, 207 (2005)]. In this work we obtain exact results for the
Barabasi model with two tasks, calculating the priority and waiting time
distribution of active tasks. We demonstrate that the model has a singular
behavior in the extremal dynamics limit, when the highest priority task is
selected first. We find that independently of the selection protocol, the
average waiting time is smaller or equal to the number of active tasks, and
discuss the asymptotic behavior of the waiting time distribution. These results
have important implications for understanding complex systems with extremal
