The #FeesMustFall protests in South Africa: Exploring first-year studentsā experiences at a peri-urban university campus
Students experienced unique challenges in transitioning to their first-year during the FeesMustFall (#FMF) protest actions. It is important to examine studentsā first-year adjustment experiences amidst study disruptions to ensure better outcomes of first-year study experiences. The impact of protest actions on the economy, higher education institutions (HEIs) and the individual student may be harmful when not managed effectively. The current study aims to clarify the first-year experience to explore how South African first-year students enrolled at a peri-urban university campus experienced the #FMF protest actions. The peri-urban university campus serves a large rural catchment area. Using the Mmogo-methodĀ® and unstructured individual interviews, researchers gathered in-depth experiences of fifteen participants who provided insight into their subjective experiences of their first-year transitions during the #FMF movement. Thematic analysis resulted in four themes: Clashes between students and police or campus security; the impact of protest actions on studentsā lives; psychological experiences of trauma and physical harm; and student attitudes towards and needs in times of crisis. The study uncovered the experiences of first-year students at a peri-urban campus. The knowledge gathered could aid universities to develop proactive measures to minimize the impact of the protest actions or disruptions on the institution itself, students and stakeholders involved
Thermal Stabilization of the HCP Phase in Titanium
We have used a tight-binding model that is fit to first-principles
electronic-structure calculations for titanium to calculate quasi-harmonic
phonons and the Gibbs free energy of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and omega
crystal structures. We show that the true zero-temperature ground-state is the
omega structure, although this has never been observed experimentally at normal
pressure, and that it is the entropy from the thermal population of phonon
states which stabilizes the hcp structure at room temperature. We present the
first completely theoretical prediction of the temperature- and
pressure-dependence of the hcp-omega phase transformation and show that it is
in good agreement with experiment. The quasi-harmonic approximation fails to
adequately treat the bcc phase because the zero-temperature phonons of this
structure are not all stable
Measuring HIV stigma for PLHAs and nurses over time in five African countries
The aim of this article is to document the levels of HIV stigma reported by persons living with HIV infections and nurses in Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland and Tanzania over a 1-year period. HIV stigma has been shown to negatively affect the quality of life for people living with HIV infection, their adherence to medication, and their access to care. Few studies have documented HIV stigma by association as experienced by nurses or other health care workers who care for people living with HIV infection. This study used standardised scales to measure the level of HIV stigma over time. A repeated measures cohort design was used to follow persons living with HIV infection and nurses involved in their care from five countries over a 1-year period in a three-wave longitudinal design. The average age of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) (N=948) was 36.15 years (SD=8.69), and 67.1% (N=617) were female. The average age of nurses (N=887) was 38.44 years (SD=9.63), and 88.6% (N=784) were females. Eighty-four per cent of all PLHAs reported one or more HIV-stigma events at baseline. This declined, but was still significant 1 year later, when 64.9% reported experiencing at least one HIV-stigma event. At baseline, 80.3% of the nurses reported experiencing one or more HIV-stigma events and this increased to 83.7% 1 year later. The study documented high levels of HIV stigma as reported by both PLHAs and nurses in all five of these African countries. These results have implications for stigma reduction interventions, particularly focused at health care providers who experience HIV stigma by association
The use of typing methods and infection prevention measures to control a bullous impetigo outbreak on a neonatal ward
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We describe an outbreak of Bullous Impetigo (BI), caused by a (methicillin susceptible, fusidic acid resistant) <it>Staphylococcus aureus</it> (SA) strain, <it>spa-</it>type t408, at the neonatal and gynaecology ward of the Jeroen Bosch hospital in the Netherlands, from March-November 2011.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed an outbreak investigation with revision of the hygienic protocols, MSSA colonization surveillance and environmental sampling for MSSA including detailed typing of <it>SA</it> isolates. <it>Spa</it> typing was performed to discriminate between the SA isolates. In addition, Raman-typing was performed on all t408 isolates.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Nineteen cases of BI were confirmed by SA positive cultures. A cluster of nine neonates and three health care workers (HCW) with <it>SA</it> t408 was detected. These strains were MecA<sup>-</sup>, PVL<sup>-</sup>, Exfoliative Toxin (ET)A<sup>-</sup>, ETB<sup>+</sup>, ETAD<sup>-</sup>, fusidic acid-resistant and methicillin susceptible. Eight out of nine neonates and two out of three HCW t408 strains yielded a similar Raman type. Positive t408 HCW were treated and infection control procedures were reinforced. These measures stopped the outbreak.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We conclude that treatment of patients and HCW carrying a predominant SA t408, and re-implementing and emphasising hygienic measures were effective to control the outbreak of SA t408 among neonates.</p

Electron correlation in C_(4N+2) carbon rings: aromatic vs. dimerized structures
The electronic structure of C_(4N+2) carbon rings exhibits competing
many-body effects of Huckel aromaticity, second-order Jahn-Teller and Peierls
instability at large sizes. This leads to possible ground state structures with
aromatic, bond angle or bond length alternated geometry. Highly accurate
quantum Monte Carlo results indicate the existence of a crossover between C_10
and C_14 from bond angle to bond length alternation. The aromatic isomer is
always a transition state. The driving mechanism is the second-order
