    Visual Perception in Architecture

    Get PDF
The objective of the thesis is to investigate human sensory conditions that are vigorously generated from the spirit of place. The sensory experiences provoke the human consciousness and are distinct for external and internal atmospheric conditions. These multiple conditions of virtual and physical perception in architecture create an atmosphere of multiple sensory experiences between the voyeur, spectator, and spectacle. The program objective that is proposed is an automobile showroom. Times Square has historically been the epicenter for automobiles as a traffic square, carriage-making district, and a terminating destination for the Lincoln Highway. Without the automobile, the experiential character of Times Square would be lost. The program is a contribution to its identity which entails an automobile test market research center that provides escort or rental transportation accommodations. The project will be sited on a west corner lot adjacent to the Lunt-Fontanne Theater and the W-Hotel facing Duffy Square in the Theater District, Manhattan, New York

Attention Advisors and Mentors: A Suggested Study Technique for Deaf College Students

    Get PDF
Deaf college students can develop a programmed study method that has been used successfully with college students for over twenty-five years. This study method will improve students grades if they will dedicate themselves to this technique rather than waiting until the lastminute to cram. Deaf students can continually review the knowledge base of lecture and textbook information by studying independently and especially by using an instructor or peer mentor. Students need to establish appropriate time management for studying and writing term papers. Deaf students must develop assertiveness in the college classroom when the lecture presentations are not clear. Successful deaf college students realize that itis not the personality of the professor that is relevant when information is presented but rather maintaining a positive attitude that will determine how much they learn

Toward a Critical Race Theory of Evidence

Scholars, judges, and lawyers have long believed that evidence rules apply equally to all persons regardless of race. This Article challenges this assumption and reveals how evidence law structurally disadvantages people of color. A critical race analysis of stand-your-ground defenses, cross-racial eyewitness misidentifications, and minority flight from racially-targeted police profiling and violence uncovers the existence of a dual-race evidentiary system. This system is reminiscent of nineteenth century race-based witness competency rules that barred people of color from testifying against white people. I deconstruct this problem and introduce the original concept of “racialized reality evidence.” This construct demonstrates how evidence of people of color’s lived experiences of systemic racism are regularly excluded at trial, while evidence of white norms and beliefs receives “implicit judicial notice.” Finally, I advocate for a new critical race theory of evidence law and offer solutions — including a reinterpretation of Federal Rule of Evidence 403 — to increase equality in the courtroom
