    In this paper, we investigate the loss of asymptotic efficiency of semiparametric and quasi-maximum-likelihood estimators relative to maximum-likelihood estimators in models with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH). For a general time-varying location}scale model, the factors that contribute to differences in efficiency among the estimators can be divided in two categories. One pertains to the parametric speci"cations of the conditional mean and the conditional variance. The other corresponds to the shape characteristics of the conditional density of the standardized errors, summarized in the coefficients of skewness and kurtosis together with the Fisher information for location and scale. The quantification of these factors has practical implications since it can help to decide if the more complex semiparametric estimator provides sufficient efficiency gains with respect to the simplest quasi-maximum-likelihood estimator. We also prove that there is no probability density function, with the exception of the normal, for which the asymptotic efficiency of the three estimators is the same.     Pseudorandom sequences in spread-spectrum communications generated by cellular automata

    "Dynamical systems methods have been recently used in spread-spectrum digital communication systems. The expansion of the spectrum using a pseudorandom sequence with a higher frequency than the information signal is the key feature for its robustness against the signal traveling interference through the channel. In this work, we propose to generate pseudorandom sequences by employing cellular automata and we check these sequences have the necessary properties which are required in modern communication systems. The computed sequences obtained by the cellular automata are tested in a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) spread-spectrum communication system. The efficiency of the system is analyzed by computing the bit error rate under different signal to noise ratio conditions. These results are compared with systems that employ Golden code and other typical pseudorandom sequences.

    Stripes, Pseudogaps, and Van Hove Nesting in the Three-band tJ Model

    Slave boson calculations have been carried out in the three-band tJ model for the high-T_c cuprates, with the inclusion of coupling to oxygen breathing mode phonons. Phonon-induced Van Hove nesting leads to a phase separation between a hole-doped domain and a (magnetic) domain near half filling, with long-range Coulomb forces limiting the separation to a nanoscopic scale. Strong correlation effects pin the Fermi level close to, but not precisely at the Van Hove singularity (VHS), which can enhance the tendency to phase separation. The resulting dispersions have been calculated, both in the uniform phases and in the phase separated regime. In the latter case, distinctly different dispersions are found for large, random domains and for regular (static) striped arrays, and a hypothetical form is presented for dynamic striped arrays. The doping dependence of the latter is found to provide an excellent description of photoemission and thermodynamic experiments on pseudogap formation in underdoped cuprates. In particular, the multiplicity of observed gaps is explained as a combination of flux phase plus charge density wave (CDW) gaps along with a superconducting gap. The largest gap is associated with VHS nesting. The apparent smooth evolution of this gap with doping masks a crossover from CDW-like effects near optimal doping to magnetic effects (flux phase) near half filling. A crossover from large Fermi surface to hole pockets with increased underdoping is found.     A home and ambulatory artificial nutrition (NADYA) group report, home parenteral nutrition in Spain, 2013

    Aim: to communicate the results of the Spanish Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) registry of the NADYA-SENPE group for the year 2013. Material and methods: data was recorded online by NADYA group collaborators that were responsible of the HPN follow-up from 1st January to 31st December 2013. Results: a total of 197 patients and 202 episodes of HPN were registered from 35 hospitals that represents a rate of 4,22 patients/million habitants/year 2013. The median age was 53 years (IQR 40 – 64) for 189 adult patients and 7 months (IQR 6 – 35,5) for children. The most frequent disease in adults was neoplasm (30,7%) followed by other diseases (20,1%) and mesenteric ischemia (12,7%). Short bowel syndrome and intestinal obstruction (25,9%) were in 35.7% cases the indications for HPN

    Fiber intake and all-cause mortality in the Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED) study

    Background: Few observational studies have examined the effect of dietary fiber intake and fruit and vegetable consumption on total mortality and have reported inconsistent results. All of the studies have been conducted in the general population and typically used only a single assessment of diet. Objective: We investigated the association of fiber intake and whole-grain, fruit, and vegetable consumption with all-cause mortality in a Mediterranean cohort of elderly adults at high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk by using repeated measurements of dietary information and taking into account the effect of a dietary intervention. Design: We followed up 7216 men (55-75 y old) and women (60-75 y old) at high CVD risk in the Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED) trial for a mean of 5.9 y. Data were analyzed as an observational cohort. Participants were initially free of CVD. A 137-item validated food-frequency questionnaire administered by dietitians was repeated annually to assess dietary exposures (fiber, fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain intakes). Deaths were identified through the continuing medical care of participants and the National Death Index. An independent, blinded Event Adjudication Committee adjudicated causes of death. Cox regression models were used to estimate HRs of death during follow-up according to baseline dietary exposures and their yearly updated changes. Results: In up to 8.7 y of follow-up, 425 participants died. Baseline fiber intake and fruit consumption were significantly associated with lower risk of death [HRs for the fifth compared with the first quintile: 0.63 (95% CI: 0.46, 0.86; P = 0.015) and 0.59 (95% CI: 0.42, 0.82; P = 0.004), respectively]. When the updated dietary information was considered, participants with fruit consumption .210 g/d had 41% lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.44, 0.78). Associations were strongest for CVD mortality than other causes of death. Conclusion: Fiber and fruit intakes are associated with a reduction in total mortality.     Asymptotic behavior of solutions to the σk\sigma_k-Yamabe equation near isolated singularities

    σk\sigma_k-Yamabe equations are conformally invariant equations generalizing the classical Yamabe equation. In an earlier work YanYan Li proved that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at 0Rn0\in \mathbb R^n to the σk\sigma_k-Yamabe equation is asymptotically radially symmetric. In this work we prove that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at 0Rn0\in \mathbb R^n to the σk\sigma_k-Yamabe equation is asymptotic to a radial solution to the same equation on Rn{0}\mathbb R^n \setminus \{0\}. These results generalize earlier pioneering work in this direction on the classical Yamabe equation by Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck. In extending the work of Caffarelli et al, we formulate and prove a general asymptotic approximation result for solutions to certain ODEs which include the case for scalar curvature and σk\sigma_k curvature cases. An alternative proof is also provided using analysis of the linearized operators at the radial solutions, along the lines of approach in a work by Korevaar, Mazzeo, Pacard, and Schoen.Comment: 55 page

    SLC26A1 is a major determinant of sulfate homeostasis in humans

    Sulfate plays a pivotal role in numerous physiological processes in the human body, including bone and cartilage health. A role of the anion transporter SLC26A1 (Sat1) for sulfate reabsorption in the kidney is supported by the observation of hyposulfatemia and hypersulfaturia in Slc26a1-knockout mice. The impact of SLC26A1 on sulfate homeostasis in humans remains to be defined. By combining clinical genetics, functional expression assays, and population exome analysis, we identify SLC26A1 as a sulfate transporter in humans and experimentally validate several loss-of-function alleles. Whole-exome sequencing from a patient presenting with painful perichondritis, hyposulfatemia, and renal sulfate wasting revealed a homozygous mutation in SLC26A1, which has not been previously described to the best of our knowledge. Whole-exome data analysis of more than 5,000 individuals confirmed that rare, putatively damaging SCL26A1 variants were significantly associated with lower plasma sulfate at the population level. Functional expression assays confirmed a substantial reduction in sulfate transport for the SLC26A1 mutation of our patient, which we consider to be novel, as well as for the additional variants detected in the population study. In conclusion, combined evidence from 3 complementary approaches supports SLC26A1 activity as a major determinant of sulfate homeostasis in humans. In view of recent evidence linking sulfate homeostasis with back pain and intervertebral disc disorder, our study identifies SLC26A1 as a potential target for modulation of musculoskeletal health
